ROUNDING NUMBERSRemember:
If a number is 4 or lower, round down
If a number is 5 or higher round up
EXAMPLES
Round 29 to the nearest ten Underline the 2 because it is in the tens
place Put a box around the 9, the 9 is the number
that you look at to figure out the rule Since 9 is 5 or higher, you would round up You will add one to the 2 which makes it a 3
and every number behind the underlined digit becomes a 0
So 29 rounded to the nearest 10 is 30
EXAMPLES
Round 409 to the nearest 100 You would underline the 4 because it is in the
hundreds place and put a box around the 0 The 0 is 4 or lower so you would round down The 4 will stay the same and every number
behind it will become a 0 So 409 rounded to the nearest hundred will
be 400
EXAMPLES
Round 273 to the nearest ten You would underline the 7 because it is in the
tens place and put a box around the 3 The 2 in the hundreds place would stay the
same because we are not rounding to that place value, the 3 tells us that we are rounding down so the 7 stays the same and every number behind it becomes a 0
So 273 rounded to the nearest ten would be 270
