Public Hearing Purpose:

• Pursuant to Florida Statute 355.199, the Florida Department of Transportation is conducting this public hearing regarding the proposed design of a roundabout at the intersection of S.R. 5/U.S. 1 and Old Dixie Highway. The department is designing this project to improve safety and mobility at the intersection.

• To present the proposed roundabout and to receive public input.

Project Limits

The project limits along U.S. 1 extend from south of Old Dixie Highway to north of Old Dixie Highway.

A distance of approximately one‐half mile.

What is a Modern Roundabout?• Accommodates vehicles of all sizes (including trucks and buses)

• Yields to circulating traffic at entry• Raised center island controls traffic flow• Reduces speed• There is no parking within the circular intersection

How do Bicyclists use a Roundabout?• Proceed as a motorist by continuing with traffic through the roundabout.

• When bicyclists continue with traffic, the same laws apply to them that apply to motor vehicles; yielding to currently circulating traffic.

Proposed MedianModifications:

• Full median opening 600 feet south of the central island to remain‐ Includes a southbound left‐turn lane

• Northbound right‐turn lane and northbound auxiliary lane serving Old Dixie Highway and S.R. 325 will be removed

ProposedMedian Modifications:• Median openings to Old Dixie Highway, County Road 325 and Trojan Road will be closed‐ Southbound left‐turn lane and median auxiliary lane will be removed

• Full Median Opening 900 feet north of the central island will be modified to allow for U‐Turns‐ Add northbound left‐turn lane

Drainage Improvements:• Improve stormwater drainage system

• Maintain existing drainage patterns

• Add new inlets to accommodate additional pavement area

• Comply with local jurisdictions and the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD)

Landscaping:• Provides a focal point to reduce headlight glare, improve safety, and enhance traffic calming

• Meets all FDOT Roundabout guidelines for sight lines and clear zones

• Low maintenance design and seasonal interest for commuters

• Water truck irrigation with hook‐up points to provide a safe alternative for watering plant material throughout the establishment period

Lighting Improvements:• New LED lighting within the proposed

roundabout• All roadway approaches will have lighting for vehicular traffic

• FDOT maintains lighting within the county and FDOT right of way• Coordination with utility agency owners ‐ Minimize construction impacts‐ Power company for service connections‐ Ensure existing lighting to adjacent properties is maintained
