The articles in the current issue try to assess the life of the whole church and they are far from complacent about "the quality of life or Christian dis- cipleship among the people who make up the congregation . . ." This reflects the real strength of any church but it is the area in which we are usually too vul- nerable to be frank. The English Churchman features the conce- cration of David Sheppard as Bishop of Woolwich in Southern Cathedral by the Archbishop of Canterbury on October 18. Rev. E. M. B. Green was the preacher, Pray God that his episcopal mitts istry will be as fruitful as his Mayflower Centre work. Mla-Mia (Mother's Union) is the national M.U. organ which in content and format has come alive of recent times. The article "Children are people" brings home the importance of the bal- ance between freedom and autho- rity in reerine children. In the Methodist, Walter Whitbread, re- tiring N.S.W. President drives home a good point when he says Preaching is ministry. So often overlooked. Church and People (s1.1.) which has been obliged to an- nounce that fortnightly publica- tion ends next month and it will become a monthly in 1970, has a good deal to say about the re- cently announced plan of Union. Obviously a rocky road ahead before the five denominations unite. The Church Times says that no great significance should be attached to the ending of the Queen's Christmas broadcasts. Better ways of communication between sovereign and people have been established. The Royal visit to Australia next year will demonstrate this again. Victor Roberts, general secretary of the South American Mission- ary Society, said that it was buy- ing up all the opportunities and taking up the South American offers for assistance. Mr Roberts said that in Aus- tralia, the problem is to educate the church that now is the day of great missionary opportunity for the Anglican Church in South America, but that time is not with us. He was delighted that in two years S.A.M.S. budget had jump- ed from $18,000 to $36,000. Although S.A.M.S. is one of the oldest Anglican societies, it is very young in Australia. It now has 12 Australians working on its mission fields and there are five candidates at the moment. In fact, there is no shortage of candidates-only a shortage of awareness of South America's need. It was the first residential seminar of its kind held in N.S.W. and it was organised by the Acting Medical Superinten- dent of Bloomfield Psychiatric Hospital and seven of the full- time psychiatric hospital chap- lains from Sydney. Its theme was the pastoral care and counselling of troubled people. The seminar opened with two short papers on the kind of pastoral problems that ministers in the West are facing. David Jenkins, an Oxford theologian of today, would say the key to the cosmos and the key to persons is in Jesus as Lord, the Word and the Flesh, in the unity of the One Person, When the realm of God is sepa- rated from the realm of science, it can be easily supposed that the realm of God can be retain- ed by making a corresponding dichotomy within man's approach to the universe. We can separate the realm of the spirit from the realm of matter. This reduces God to a hypothesis or a moral command or a feeling. So in a secular society the way is open to the discovery that we have no need of the hypothesis -that values and feelings are simply human. The way is pre- pared for the discovery that God is dead and Jesus, if anything, is the glory of man, spelt with a small "m," and that man himself is dying anyhow. Only as we re- turn to the universal significance of Jesus, Word and Flesh in unity, can we find a universal sig- nificance for man. Man's glory is only in the significance of Jesus - the key to the world and the key to persons. He didn't consort with sinners as sinners, he befriend- ed a particular woman taken in adultery. INSIGHT The List few verses of the First Chapter of St. John's Gos- pel tells us of 'the calling of Philip. He immediately went off and told Nathaniel. Nathan- iel had doubts about the Car- penter of Nazareth, but Philip urged him to come and see. As he approached, Christ said, "Be- hold, an Israelite, in whom there is no guile." One who likes straight answers, who has no time for hypocrisy. Nathaniel is surprised at this greeting and questions Christ. Christ answer- ed him, "I saw you under the fig tree," but his vision of Nathaniel was much more than eyesight, it was insight. He saw a person, and Nathaniel res- ponded to this Jesus who had in- sight into his person. It almost seems to me that the disciplines dealing with persons have learnt what we have dis- carded. The social worker, the Psychiatrist, the psychologist, the counsellor begins with the person for what he is and the level he is. We too frequently begin with the level we 'think he ought to be, and so unconsciously reject him. A major need in this computer age is a concern for person. We live at a time when power struc- tures tend to discard the indivi- dual. Mills Wright in his book, "The Power Elite," tells us that families and churches and schools adapt to modern life; governments and armies and cor- porations shape it and turn persons into means for their ends. Maybe it is not new. Emerson told us that "Things arc in the saddle and ride mankind." All of us need this reminder to see our neighbours, our em- ployers, our employees, the Ne33 Australian, the Old Australian. each other as persons. But if we need insight into the other persons, we also need to have insight into ourselves. Paul Tournier has said that the in- fluence the counsellor has on the client doesn't depend on what we say to them, it doesn't depend on what we do, it depends essen- tially on what we are. Let us sub- stitute "pastor" for "counsellor," "parishioner" for "client." The ordained ministry has been call- ed marginal in a world where so many others are concerned with man as a person. Interestingly the world over there is not generally a major shortage of clergy in the Anglican ministry. I come from a State where this statement would be true, while the Presbyterian Church has forty vacancies. Our Anglican ministry does have a sacramental content that is specific and unique and gives us something firm to which to hold. Neverthe- less there are those who say and those who feel that it has become marginal. Is it because that we are conscious of this and so are inclined to revert to an authorita- rian ministry to cover up our lack of training and ability to maintain beside the other disci- plines our contribution as pastors? PASTORIAL STRENGTH We must re-think our pastoral ministry and retain for it a place that allows it to share with the other conselling ministries. I am told consideration is be- ing given in some States to add specialised training for the me- dical general practitioner in the area of counselling. Do we be- come more defensive, more authoritarian, allow ourselves to be pushed out, or opt out? I have said our Anglican ministry has a sacramental con- tent, hut in the past it has also had pastoral strength. If we were never preachers, we were visi- tors. We did aim to know our people and to minister to them in their crises and needs. T HIS WAS ONE of the ques- tions put to the Panel at St. Mark's Camberwell on Thurs- day October 30. And the answer given was "Because we have a special ministry to the women of our Church." The occasion was a Day of Fellowship organised by the Women's Committee of the A.E.F.V.(Anglican Evangelical Fellowship of Victoria). Notices had been sent to Anglican wo- men who went forward at the Billy Graham Crusade. A num- ber of these were present and others wrote to say how they appreciated the invitation. There were about 150 present, and Mrs Shirley Temby chaired each session, with Mrs Mary Powys as the main speaker. In 'her address, Mrs Powys showed how women can know Jesus Christ in a practical way, and while the Christian life is not "Roses, roses all the way." yet our Lord will be with us in our problems if we commit our lives to Him and seek His wisdom and grace through prayer. We are saved to serve, to share God's love with others; ordinary people can do amazing things through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is important for Christian mothers to spend time with their children and to show them affec- tion. Mrs Thelma Freeman led the singing and Mrs Dorothy Lang- ford sang two solos. Testimonies were given by Miss Barbara Spring, a C.M.S. Missionary from Tanzania, and Mrs Gwen Roberts from St. James' Ivanhoe. A feature of these women's rallies is the panel, at which the question at the top of this article was asked. Other questions touched on Healing, Jehovah's Witnesses, Spiritualism, Re- bellious Teenagers etc. and much practical Christian wisdom was proffered in the down-to-earth answers. Further rallies are to be plan- ned in different areas next year. about visas for missionaries. But this will not last, Ecclesiastic- ally, Latin America faces the utter failure of Roman Catholic- ism to become part of its peoples' culture. An R.C. scholar, Robert Wood, estimates that only 15 per cent of Roman Catholics in the vast sub-continent have any church connection. Protestants are certainly no more than 10 per cent of the population and so only 25 per cent feel any Christian influence. The other 75 per cent is the present mission field. And there is a complete absence of other world religions like Islam to make greater difficulties. Social changes are rapid and include vast millions becoming literate and so open to the Bible. Forty per cent of South Ameri- cans are young people under 15. Its population growth is greater even than that of Asia and a population of over 620 million is predicted by the end of this century. S.A.M.S. presents Australian Anglicans with a great and urgent missionary challenge. The founders of the Australian branch of S.A.M.S. 10 years ago began a work for the gospel that must go forward. Canons for Parramatta, Wollongong TWO CLERICAL canons and two lay canons have been appointed by the Archbishiop of Sydney following the recent creation of St. John's Church, Parramatta and St. Michaels Church, Wollongong, as provi- sional cathedrals. The canons appointed to the Chapter of St. John's Provisional Cathedral are Rev. Peter R. Wat- son, Curate-in-Charge of the Provisional Parish of St. Clement's Lalor Park and, Rural Dean of Prospect; and Mr Philip Graham, a layman from St. Mat- thew's, West Pennant Hills. Canon Watson, who is 33, be- comes the youngest holder of that office in the diocese of Syd- ney. Canons appointed to the Chap- ter of St. Michael's Wollongong, are the Rev. Fred. J. Camroux, Rector of St. Andrew's, Cronulla and Rural Dean of Sutherland; and Mr Lindsay Evans, a lay- man from St. Luke's Dapto. The Rector of St. John's, Par- ramatta, the Rev, Kenneth L. this question this month, Rev. Victor Roberts, general secretary of the South American Mission-ary Society, said that it was buy-ing up all the opportunities and taking up the South American offers for assistance.

Mr Roberts said that in Aus-tralia, the problem is to educate the church that now is the day of great missionary opportunity for the Anglican Church in South America, but that time is not with us.

He was delighted that in two years S.A.M.S. budget had jump-ed from $18,000 to $36,000. Although S.A.M.S. is one of the oldest Anglican societies, it is very young in Australia. It now has 12 Australians working on its mission fields and there are five candidates at the moment. In fact, there is no shortage of candidates-only a shortage of awareness of South America's need.

BIBLE CROSSWORD No. 7

OVER 40 ministers from eight denominations serving the

western areas of N.S.W. attended a two-day residential seminar at Bloomfield Hospital, Orange, N.S.W. October 28 to 29.

It was the first residential seminar of its kind held in N.S.W. and it was organised by the Acting Medical Superinten-dent of Bloomfield Psychiatric Hospital and seven of the full-time psychiatric hospital chap-lains from Sydney. Its theme was the pastoral care and counselling of troubled people.

The seminar opened with two short papers on the kind of pastoral problems that ministers in the West are facing. They were given by Rev. Alan Brand and Canon Eric Barker.

Three doctors presented detailed case histories andasked for the help of the seminar members in the future care of these patients, insisting that ministers of the gospel have much to contribute. After a brief session on the art of inter-viewing members went in pairs and interviewed hospital patients, returning to discuss the problems met and the minister's role in helping such people in the parish,

diocese of Sydney have been re-organised as from 1 January next.

The Archbishop has announced that the three rural deaneries of East Sydney, Balmain and Cook's River will be reformed into four rural deaneries of East Sydney (with the Rev. E. G. Mortley as Rural Dean), Sydney (with the Rev. B. G. Judd as Rural Dean). South Sydney (with the Rev. Canon W. K. Deasey as Rural Dean) and Balmain (with the Rev. J. F. G. Olds as Rural Dean). This re-organisa-tion follows the recommen-dations of the Inner City Com-mission, of which Bishop A. J. Dais was chairman.

The boundaries of the rural deaneries of Gordon and Ryde will be re-drawn to provide for three rural deaneries as follows: Gordon (with the Rev:-Canon S. G. Stewart as Rural Dean); Ryde (with the Rev. Canon. C. H. Sherlock) and Hornsby (with the Rev. A. W. Setchell as Rural Dean).

Goodwin will concentrate increasingly on the affairs of the Glebe Adminis-tration Board in addition to his work as rector of St. Philip's, Sydney, and Director of the Church of England Raiment Villages. Of basic A-frame construction, the Church will accommo-date up to 300 people. Its over-all design is tasteful and very pleasing, and the brickwork is exceptionally well done. The cost of the building was about 585.000.

The Church, which will seat over 300 people, is being erect-ed with much voluntary help.

What is Man? David Jenkins, an Oxford theologian of today, would say the key to the cosmos and the key to persons is in Jesus as Lord, the Word and the Flesh, in the unity of the One Person, When the realm of God is sepa-rated from the realm of science, it can be easily supposed that the realm of God can be retain-ed by making a corresponding dichotomy within man's approach to the universe. We can separate the realm of the spirit from the realm of matter. This reduces God to a hypothesis or a moral command or a feeling.

So in a secular society the way is open to the discovery that we have no need of the hypothesis -that values and feelings are simply human. The way is pre-pared for the discovery that God is dead and Jesus, if anything, is the glory of man, spelt with a small "m," and that man himself is dying anyhow. Only as we re-turn to the universal significance of Jesus, Word and Flesh in unity, can we find a universal sig-nificance for man. Man's glory is only in the significance of Jesus - the key to the world and the key to persons.

once makes nonsense of God. Im-manence without transcendence makes nonsense of man. God and man - both are worldly and otherworldly.

What is Man? Too readily for many of us a type. They are col-oured, we are white. They are Jews, we are Christians or Arabs. They are women, we are men. They are Catholic, we are Protes-tant. Jesus thought of people as persons. He didn't eat with pub-licans, but with Matthew and his friends. He didn't consort with sinners as sinners, he befriend-ed a particular woman taken in adultery.

INSIGHT The List few verses of the

First Chapter of St. John's Gos-pel tells us of 'the calling of Philip. He immediately went off and told Nathaniel. Nathan-iel had doubts about the Car-penter of Nazareth, but Philip urged him to come and see. As he approached, Christ said, "Be-hold, an Israelite, in whom there is no guile." One who likes straight answers, who has no time for hypocrisy. Nathaniel is surprised at this greeting and questions Christ. Christ answer-ed him, "I saw you under the fig tree," but his vision of Nathaniel was much more than eyesight, it was insight. He saw a person, and Nathaniel res-ponded to this Jesus who had in-sight into his person.

It almost seems to me that the disciplines dealing with persons have learnt what we have dis-carded. The social worker, the Psychiatrist, the psychologist, the counsellor begins with the person for what he is and the level he is. We too frequently begin with the level we 'think he ought to be, and so unconsciously reject him.

A major need in this computer age is a concern for person. We live at a time when power struc-tures tend to discard the indivi-dual. Mills Wright in his book, "The Power Elite," tells us that families and churches and schools adapt to modern life;

governments and armies and cor-porations shape it and turn persons into means for their ends. Maybe it is not new. Emerson told us that "Things arc in the saddle and ride mankind." All of us need this reminder to see our neighbours, our em-ployers, our employees, the Ne33 Australian, the Old Australian. each other as persons.

But if we need insight into the other persons, we also need to have insight into ourselves. Paul Tournier has said that the in-fluence the counsellor has on the client doesn't depend on what we say to them, it doesn't depend on what we do, it depends essen-tially on what we are. Let us sub-stitute "pastor" for "counsellor," "parishioner" for "client." The ordained ministry has been call-ed marginal in a world where so many others are concerned with man as a person. Interestingly the world over there is not generally a major shortage of clergy in the Anglican ministry. I come from a State where this statement would be true, while the Presbyterian Church has forty vacancies. Our Anglican ministry does have a sacramental content that is specific and unique and gives us something firm to which to hold. Neverthe-less there are those who say and those who feel that it has become marginal. Is it because that we are conscious of this and so are inclined to revert to an authorita-rian ministry to cover up our lack of training and ability to maintain beside the other disci-plines our contribution as pastors?

PASTORIAL STRENGTH We must re-think our pastoral

ministry and retain for it a place that allows it to share with the other conselling ministries.

I am told consideration is be-ing given in some States to add specialised training for the me-dical general practitioner in the area of counselling. Do we be-come more defensive, more authoritarian, allow ourselves to be pushed out, or opt out?

I have said our Anglican ministry has a sacramental con-tent, hut in the past it has also had pastoral strength. If we were never preachers, we were visi-tors. We did aim to know our people and to minister to them in their crises and needs.

THIS WAS ONE of the ques-tions put to the Panel at

St. Mark's Camberwell on Thurs-day October 30. And the answer given was "Because we have a special ministry to the women of our Church."

The occasion was a Day of Fellowship organised by the Women's Committee of the A.E.F.V.(Anglican Evangelical Fellowship of Victoria). Notices had been sent to Anglican wo-men who went forward at the Billy Graham Crusade. A num-ber of these were present and others wrote to say how they appreciated the invitation.

There were about 150 present, and Mrs Shirley Temby chaired each session, with Mrs Mary Powys as the main speaker. In 'her address, Mrs Powys showed how women can know Jesus Christ in a practical way, and while the Christian life is not "Roses, roses all the way." yet our Lord will be with us in our problems if we commit our lives to Him and seek His wisdom and grace through prayer. We are saved to serve, to share God's love with others; ordinary people can do amazing things through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is important for Christian mothers to spend time with their children and to show them affec-tion.

Mrs Thelma Freeman led the singing and Mrs Dorothy Lang-ford sang two solos. Testimonies were given by Miss Barbara Spring, a C.M.S. Missionary from Tanzania, and Mrs Gwen Roberts from St. James' Ivanhoe.

A feature of these women's rallies is the panel, at which the question at the top of this article was asked. Other questions touched on Healing, Jehovah's Witnesses, Spiritualism, Re-bellious Teenagers etc. and much practical Christian wisdom was proffered in the down-to-earth answers.

about visas for missionaries. But this will not last, Ecclesiastic-ally, Latin America faces the utter failure of Roman Catholic-ism to become part of its peoples' culture. An R.C. scholar, Robert Wood, estimates that only 15 per cent of Roman Catholics in the vast sub-continent have any church connection.

Protestants are certainly no more than 10 per cent of the population and so only 25 per cent feel any Christian influence. The other 75 per cent is the present mission field. And there is a complete absence of other world religions like Islam to make greater difficulties.

Social changes are rapid and include vast millions becoming literate and so open to the Bible. Forty per cent of South Ameri-cans are young people under 15. Its population growth is greater even than that of Asia and a population of over 620 million is predicted by the end of this century.

S.A.M.S. presents Australian Anglicans with a great and urgent missionary challenge. The founders of the Australian branch of S.A.M.S. 10 years ago began a work for the gospel that must go forward.

Canons for Parramatta, Wollongong TWO CLERICAL canons and

two lay canons have been appointed by the Archbishiop of Sydney following the recent creation of St. John's Church, Parramatta and St. Michaels Church, Wollongong, as provi-sional cathedrals.

The canons appointed to the Chapter of St. John's Provisional Cathedral are Rev. Peter R. Wat-son, Curate-in-Charge of the Provisional Parish of St. Clement's Lalor Park and, Rural Dean of Prospect; and Mr Philip Graham, a layman from St. Mat-thew's, West Pennant Hills. Canon Watson, who is 33, be-comes the youngest holder of that office in the diocese of Syd-ney.

Canons appointed to the Chap-ter of St. Michael's Wollongong, are the Rev. Fred. J. Camroux, Rector of St. Andrew's, Cronulla and Rural Dean of Sutherland; and Mr Lindsay Evans, a lay-man from St. Luke's Dapto.

The Rector of St. John's, Par-ramatta, the Rev, Kenneth L. Loane, and the Rector of St. Michael's, Wollongong, the Rev. Canon Basel H. Williams, be-come senior canons ex officio.

Steps are being taken to elect other clerical and lay canons to the Chapters of the two provi-sional cathedrals in accordance with ordinances passed at the recent session of the synod of the diocese of Sydney.

THE MESSAGE OF ADVENT

Christ is here! "Advent tells us Christ is here, Christmas tells us Christ is near;

In Epiphany we trace All the wonders of God's Grace."

So runs the hymn. So what! To most people today, including the Christian Church, Advent is a feverish rush of pre-Christ-mas activities. Yet our Prayer Book makes Advent so impor-tant that it 'introduces the Church's year. The Advent col-lects, following "Stir-Up" Sun-day outreach, tells us to Cast out, Read on, Stand firm, and conclude with, God help us! What does Advent really say. To me it says:

CHRIST IS HERE! Romans 8 looks at both the

now and the ultimate. Christian life and experience conform to this pattern. Paul says, "All who are led by the Spirit of God are Sons of God" and again, "we groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as son." In this he links not only a present personal experience, but the whole of God's creation and future rule. Today's space ex-plorations confirm more and more the magnitude of this crea-tion. Advent reminds us that while it is complete in essence the ultimate return of Christ is the guarantee that God is con-cerned for men both in time and in eternity. But yet, with all of this fantastic plan before me, Christ is here with me now.

Some are twelfth and thirteenth century churches of delightful architecture. Inside, however, they are largely dark, depressing places, with the smell of incense adding to the pagan, not Christian, atmosphere.

VAIN WORSHIP The buildings and atmosphere

are both symbolic of the religion of Rome. On the outside there is much that creates a fveourable impression. One thinks, in parti-cular, of its hospitals, colleges, and other institutions. On the inside, however, so much speaks of darkness and despair. As one

' moves among the people one finds that the idolatry and ritual, the burning of incense and chanting of prayers, are as delusory and unrewarding to the worshippers as they are grievous and unacceptable to God.

ROME REJECTED It is the religious change,

however, that excites our main interest. Immediately we are challenged with this fact, that this great majority of the people of France, Spain, and Italy, have rejected the religion of Rome. It is now estimated that only 10 per cent of the overall popu-lation are practising Catholics. Their break with religious tradi-tions. and failure to find satis-faction in the material and sen-sual things of the world, present us with a unique opportunity to make known the liberating, sat-isfying Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ!

DIFFERENT APPROACH NEEDED

How can they be attracted and Christ presented to them? How can they be won for Him? Time and time again as I walked the same streets at night, I asked myself these wry questions. I am certain that it will not he done by starting and publicising "Protestant" or "Evangelical" services. Such names would alarm rather than attract them.

EUROPE BY-PASSED Today, Europe stands as the

world's most neglected mission field. It is also the most densely populated continent in the world with 228 to the square mile com-pared with 170 in Asia. But we have looked upon this thickly populated, highly civilised part of the world as being nominally Christian, and have by-passed it for other fields. Broadly speak-ing, a whole continent has been left in the darkness of Rome.

A PHYSICIAN ONCE asked me a question which em-

barrassed me very much. "Why is it," he said, "that so many Christians I treat and who are supposed to be so sure of heaven are as afraid of dying as anyone else?" I'm ashamed to admit that my first reaction was to say, to myself, "Well, perhaps those people aren't very good Chris-tians." I think I know better now. What do you think?

In our society, most people live on the assumption that for all practical purposes they are immortal. Death is just not one of their problems. The middle-aged doctor, or clergyman, sitting by the bed of the sick, is still secretly sustained by this convic-tion. They are like giants, dispen-sing strengthening remedies out of their large supplies. The heal-thy hospital visitor, with flowers or biscuits, is one of the same company.

This tendency in us is encour-aged by our material way of life. Vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, and all consumer goods decay, yet the consumers go on forever. Every year, automobiles grow more powerful—and, by infer-ence, the potency of those who drive them, So much of what we eat is, apparently, so good for us, that it's hard to believe that our youth is not being renewed as we eat. But we are human beings for all that, and we move, from time to time, away from the bright lights of the lffistling world into the shadows of doubt, anxiety or pain. In these shad-

ows we may learn that we are not physically immortal after all. This is where fear finds entry.

Yet it is not proper for Chris-tians to remain afraid. "Perfect love," says a New Testane writer, "casts out fear." The per -feet feet love is not ours, of course. Perfect love is the love of God expressed in Jesus Christ, His death, His life. When we take Jesus Christ into our lives, fear is cast out; as we hold on to Him, fear is kept out. In the history of God's dealings with men, He sets a premium on our seeking Him. To call out to Him iti our frailty is to seek Him.

THE SERMON It is not normally the function

of a sermon to be an instruc-tion, except incidentally. Its normal primary fimction is to he a personal exposition of its scrip-tural text, with an application to the known needs of the con-gregation for worship and daily Christian life.

"he shall come again" EVERY SUNDAY IN ADVENT we will pray in the

In the creeds which we will recite at Morning and Evening Prayer and at Holy Com-munion we shall say "from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead" or " he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end,"

It is no accident that the Protestant reformers who gave us our Book of Common Prayer provided that we should acknowledge two great saving truths. One is the great binding principle of all reformed theo-logy — God's sovereignty. The other is our Lord's personal return to judge the living and the dead.

The Christian use of the Advent season is mean-ingless unless we bring men this great message of as-surance and hope — Jesus our Saviour is conning again. The Bible calls it "the blessed hope." It is this world's only source of hope and yet it is a message which many seek to minimise. Some preachers don't appear to believe it at all, for they never preach it.

Our Lord's return, like the shedding of his blood for the sin of men, is the strong golden thread which ties together every page of the Bible. Its message is meaningless without it. Our daily fellowship with Christ through prayer, meditation and Bible reading; our ser-vice for Him throughout our lives; both are immeasur-ably precious only because of His promise "I will conic again."

We reach a high-point in the understanding of the Christian's sacrament of fellowship in the Holy Communion only when we grasp the emphasis in St. Paul's words "As often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup, you do show the Lord's death till He come."

Man's skills and the extent of his knowledge have suddenly come to seem boundless to the men of our age. All are asking "where will our modern discoveries lead to?" Others are appalled by man's increasing power to pollute and destroy his own environment and his own kind. They are asking, "Where will it all end?"

To both questions the answer is the same. "He will come again to judge the living and the dead."

The first men to land on the moon were struck by the timelessness of that eerie landscape. Millions of years had passed it by. The Bible makes it clear that our time shall end. The last times will come. Rev-elation 10:6 speaks of these times as a time when "there should be time no longer." All creation will return to Him who gave it.

At Advent we must proclaim Him as man's only Saviour, the one in whom alone man finds hope of eternal life. We must uplift Him while time remains so that men will see His coming again as the blessed hope, not the dreaded judgment.

NEW SPANISH BIBLE

LlAITH IS something which is not tangible and is difficult

to define and thus hard for the ordinary person to understand or accept; yet how many things there are which can be put in this category and we more or less accept them without ques-tion.

As to electricity, we cannot say exactly what it is nor under-stand all its workings yet we so easily press down the switch and expect the light to come on or the oven to heat up. Similar-ly, there are happenings and benefits of science, medicine, aeronautics and the like, which though we do not understand, yet we accept in good faith.

Likewise, we exercise faith often in the course of daily living—we have faith in our mother or wife that the food she puts before us to eat is not ooisoned; we have faith in the bank in which we deposit our money for safe keeping; we have faith in the bus or train driver that he is a capable and responsible person; we have faith in our teachers and friends in everyday matters.

Why do we put this confi-dence in them? Surely because of their character! We believe hem to be trustworthy for they

Epistle to the Hebrews, there is cited from the Old Testament those who displayed such faith. "Noah, who being warned by God concerning events unseen took heed and constructed an ark for the saving of his house-hold: Abraham, who obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance, and went out, not knowing where exactly he was to go." And such like in-stances of faith abound in the chapter.

Furthermore, as we read the Gospel stories we see many out-standing cases of healing in re-sponse to faith in our Lord Jesus Christ; and just as con-vincing are other happenings where those who came to know Him went in faith at His Word and found it to be "just as He had told them." (Luke 19:3, 22:13, John 11:40).

St. Paul says "faith is the response to hearing the preach-ing of Christ," for as the grace of God works in the heart one is brought not only to repent of his sin but also to faith in Christ the Sinbearer, through Whom there is forgiveness and cleansing from sin.

Another aspect of faith is that which implies a 'committal' to Christ—like the little boy who watched Blondin, the tight-rope walker, wheel a barrow across the Niagara Falls, then said he believed Blondin could wheel him across in it but when told to hop in the barrow, the boy ran off—because he was not willing to commit himself (in faith) to Blondin. So, too, in our faith in Christ, there is a committal of ourselves to Him—a resting in Him and upon His promises.

Romans 10:9-10 affirms that following the hearing, believing and the committal there must also be confession of Him be-fore others as Saviour and Lord.

The apostle James, in his letter, declares the acid test of faith is that our good works should be in accord with our profession and demonstrate the reality of our faith.

A personal faith in Christ is the need of all men and the objective of the Gospel.

Protestant-R.C. working group

The executive committee of the Australian Council of Churches has nominated 13 churchmen to represent it on the Joint Work-ing Group of the A.C.C. and the Roman Catholic Church.

Co-chairmen` of the group since its inception have been the Anglican Archbishop of Mel-bourne (Dr Frank Woods) and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Hobart (Dr Guilford Young).

Latin America is becoming literate. The Gospel is becoming a significant force in the life of the Spanish-speaking countries of this hemisphere. The Good News of salvation is transform-ing the existence of the Indian tribes in Mexico or Bolivia, and of the modern man in gigantic cities like Buenos Aires and Mexico City.

The evangelical church of Latin America knows and is concerned with the problems of communications. The tribal man of - the isolated mountain areas as well as the man of the masses in the metropolis needs to know the full content of God's Word. Here we indicate two basic needs for a new Bible translation. The reader must un-derstand — that is communica-tion —, and he must understand the riches of God's self-revela-tion — that is content. The challenge which the present translation team has placed be-fore itself is precisely to do this: To present the Bible in words that communicate, and not lose the riches of God's revelation—as happens too often in the new, popular versions — in its desire for communication.

The new proposed Spanish translation of the Scriptures is a team effort. The publishers, the New York Bible Society and the World Home Bible League, have appointed a group of nine to the task. They will enjoy the op-operation of some one hundred national field consultants from throughout Latin America. The consultants. through their sug-

gestions and criticisms !elated to style and content, will help make this translation more acceptable in all of Latin America where men speak Spanish, but not al-ways Plc same kind of Spanish.

PEOPLE CAN draw their own conclusions, says the Arch-bishop of Brisbane, about some statistics he drew up recently. He writes in the "Church Chro-nicle": Statigtics we know are not everything, yet the modern world right or wrongly — and probably wrongly — evaluates most things by them. It tends to produce statistics to prove the decline of the Church's influence, and so it may help to correct this prevailing idea, or to give it a better sense of proportion if I tell you of an interesting coin-parison, as far as the Birsbane diocese is concerned regarding numbers of clergy, parishes, con-firmees and the scope and ex-tent of episcopal work, which a little research in my office at Bishopsbourne has revealed. Forty years ago in 1929 the dio-cese of Brisbane depended for episcopal work on two full-time bishops, Archbishop Sharp and Bishop Le Fanu as Bishop Coad-jutor. There were 128 clergy, 90 parishes and 1,476 persons con-firmed that year. Forty years later in 1968 the diocese still had but two active and full-time bishops for episcopal work, namely myself and Bishop Hud-son.

The number of clergy was 229 — 100 more than in 1929; the number of parishes 112 — 22 more than in 1929. The number of those confirmed in 1968 was 4,824.

Reference to census statistics indicates the population has about doubled in those forty years — the number of those confirmed is more than three times the number in 1929.

are honest and reliable, as far as we know, and so our faith in them is expressed in various ways. This same reasoning when applied to faith in God has the same basis and content, for when we come to know God, we find that He is of such dharacter that a man can im-plicitly believe in Him for He is trustworthy.

The Bible abounds with stories of men and women whose belief in God caused them to do things which to the ordinary man would seem fool-ish or unreasonable, but it was because they had so come to know Him that they acted in re-sponse to His word spoken to them.

t I•Ve, Spanish translation -I` 1 of the Bible is being pre-pared with the co-operation of four Christian Reformed mis-sionaries in Mexico. Like other language areas, the Spanish-speaking countries have a num-ber of Bible versions: The Old Version, the Revised Version, Modern Version, the Popular Version, not to mention others less known. Is a new popular version of the Bible really neces-sary? The answer is a clear "Yes." The evangelical commu-nity of Latin America supports this decision.

Melbourne synodsmen have heeded this complaint and have elected Deaconess Elizabeth Al-fred as a lay representative of Melbourne in the next General Synod. Her election as a "lay" representative highlights the ano-malous status of deaconesses in the Church. However, if they are not to be accorded the status of clergy they cannot be denied that of laity. Moreover the English canon is explicit—"... deacones-ses may accept membership of any lay assembly of the Church of England without prejudice to the standing of their order."

Australian C.M.S. support

FIGURES showing support for the Church Missionary Society in the six Australian States are published in the current issue of "C.M.S. News." The figures are for the six years 1963-69 and they show in order, the number of missionaries sent from each State, the percentage of mission-aries sent and the percentage of the Federal budget contributed by each State.

The figures in this order for each State are; N.S.W. 114, 63 per cent, 52.76 p.c.; Vic. 35, 19 p.c., 31.54 p.c.; S.A. 12, 7 P.c., 6.01 p.c.; Qld. 10, 5.5 p.c., 4,66 p.c.; Tas. 8, 4.5 p.c., 3.06 p.c.; W.A 2, 1 p.c., 1.97 p.c.

The comment is made that N.S.W. provides only 52.76 p.c. of the Federal budget when 63 p.c. of the Federal missionaries , from that State.

law changes In his election campaign

speeches earlier this year, the Queensland Premier (Mr J. isjelke-Petersen) had stated that ne would hit restrictions on restaurant liquor licences (so icing as they met certain steno-arus set by the licensing board) and that he would also grant licences to motels. The Premier, woo is himself a teetotaller, hao been quite explicit in his pre-election assurances that mere would be no extension of the present bona fide traveller Sun-day trading law.

The liquor industry has been anxious to remove this restric-tion and on October 29 the Government announced its in-tention to extend Sunday trading despite the pre-election assur-ances. Church leaders have for-warded a lettergram to all cabi-net members and also to M.P.s living in the Brisbane metro-politan area. The lettergram was drafted from Archbishop Strong's policy statement on Sunday drinking, and was signed by him and the heads of the Churches.

State Cabinet met on Novem-ber 10 to consider the proposed changes, and is to make a recom-mendation to the joint govern-ment parties on November 12.

London (EPS).---The British Methodist Conference's vote last July to enter the first stage of union with the Church of Eng-land (Anglican) will be chal-lenged in the High Court here.

Solicitors acting for the Voice of Methodism Association, an organisation long opposed to the plan for union, said a summons was issued in the High Court September 9 against the Method-dist Conference president, the Rev. Brian O'Gorman, and its secretary, the Rev. Eric Baker. The association seeks a Court ruling that the July decision favourable to union was beyond the Conference's power. It also asked for a Court-directed refer-endum on the issue among all Methuili,ts in Britain.

BLUE GUM LODGE THE BISHOP IN Parramatta,

the Rt. Rev. H. G. S. Begbie, recently unveiled a foundation plaque for Blue Gum Lodge, the first step of a $150,000 project of the Sydney Youth Depart-ment. The original Blue Gum 'Lodge at Springwood was des-troyed in bush fires which swept the Blue Mountains in Novem-ber last year. About 200 people attended the ceremony and took part in a service led by the Youth Director, Rev. James Doust, and Rev. R. H. Goodhew (a member of the Youth Council). USING LAYMEN While sonic Australian dioceses

are reporting a reduction in the number of licensed lay readers who probably don't amount to 2,000 altogether, our smaller sister church in the U.S.A. reports 17,000 last year.

P.E.C.U.S.A. reports that the number reflects "the growing importance of supplemental lay ministeries in the life of the church." "Lay readers have been called upon to handle an increas-ing share of pastoral functions and responsibilities that were once the exclusive business of professionally trained clergy" it goes on.

To catch up with the Protest-ant Episcopal Church, we need to recruit another 30,000 lay readers here in Australia. That's a really worthwhile task.

TICKETS Federal elections are fresh

enough in our memories to en-able us to realise that all except the most rugged individualists are glad enough to use the how-to-vote directions put out by the various parties. In fact, they become essential in elections for the Senate, unless we are de-termined to join the donkey vote. And nobody complains to the Press that the issue of tickets prevents Christians seeking God's guidance in constant prayer.

We were amused to find some-one pulling out this old chestnut about a ticket that was allegedly circulated at the recent Mel-bourne synod. He admitted that choosing 72 candidates out of 120 offering for Provincial and General Synods was not easy. Then he said that a ticket saved some members the trouble of thinking and praying.

It is a strange and un-christian sentiment and does little justice to the writer's own thoughtful-ness but says a lot about his emotions.

Suggestions on how to vote have been part of our way of life for centuries. It would be a very foolish man who would hope that his prayers would tell him in detail which 72 out of 120 people he should vote for. Duplicated or printed materials about various candidates have been circulated to synod mem-bers in all the larger synods of this and every other country for generations. And Anglicans are not alone in this.

It would be a very brave man who would suggest that each individual in the 700 - member synods of Sydney and Mel-bourne, for example, should be sufficiently informed on all can-didates to be able to make an unguided choice. A prayerful choice in such circumstances must mean more than this.

LET'S SAY "NO" For the sake of the whole

Australian community, the vot-ers in the N.S.W. Sunday hotel trading referendum on November 29 should vote a resounding "no."

The liquor interests have mounted a well-timed campaign over the mass media which in-dicates their great financial re-sources. They alone have any-thing to gain from a "yes" vote in the referendum. The citizens in general would be the losers. Some of the worst features of Australian life have been markedly absent on Sundays. Something of the restfulness and peace of the Lord's Day still re-mains. Hotel orphans and widows have seen something of their fathers and husbands on Sun-days. The liquor interests want to change all this.

The brewery and hotel interests are advertising that a "yes" vote is not a vote for Sunday trading but a vote for freedom of choice. These cynical people do not like freedom of choice. The whole system of tied hotels and brewery monopolies denies freedom of choice. The freedom they are concerned with is the freedom to make larger profits from the in-dulgence of a seven-day-a-week appetite.

If N.S.W. succumbs to the liquor interests in this referen-dum, it will not be long before they press governments in other states for the same concession. We hope that every Christian will vote "no," encourage others to vote "no" and pray and work for a "no" victory.

inwardly whooped when reading something that we've been say-ing for a long time. "The Report of the C. of E. Liturgical Com-mission Concerning the Calen-dar of Lessons" has this to say: "Today, in fact, no attempt is made in many parishes to hold services on Red Letter days, and the pastor in the twentieth cen-tury must be content if he can effectually proclaim the duty of worshis on Sunday and a few other major festivals." It's a rather grudging admission that we cannot ask church members to be the church in the world and at the same time press them to centre their lives around churchly activities. We suspect that in most places where people are so pressed, they come largely out of loyalty to the clergyman.

Reviews of "Catholic Angli-cans Today" have generally been unfavourable. However, David Edwards in "View Review" found it full of quiet assurance. I especially enjoyed his opening gambit: "Catholic means univer-sal. But which universe? The universe of Anglo - Catholicism, a congregationalist sect with a thin veneer of episcopage, which suddenly originated in Oxford in the 1830s and, after seeming to dominate the Church of Eng-land, a century later declined with the rapidity of its rise?" The bit about congregationalist confirms what the principal of a Congregational Theological Col-lege said as we bemoaned the decline of congregationalism. He said, with a twinkle, "Ah yes, but we are so glad that you Anglicans have revived the prin-ciple!"

Roland Allen's work is still exercising a fascination for many Christians. You remember his "Missionary Methods: Ours or St. Paul's?" He pops up again in "Reform of the Ministry," edited by David M. Paton. We're excited to learn that Allen wondered whethei lie ordained

dimistry should be, for the most part, voluntary and self-support-ing.

We can discern the day not far distant when parishes simply won't be able to pay for the luxury of a full-time clergyman. He also asks whether the Eucharist is meaningful only when it is celebrated in small or domestic groups? Wasn't the domestic grouping one of the patterns of New Testament mini-stry? Aren't our faces turned against it because clergy are responsible to maintain the parochial structure and bring the people to church? Shouldn't all Christians be going out to others?

A snippet from the eminently quotable John Taylor of C.M.S. sums up much of what we've said, "Ali that 1 ,have seen of evangelistic vitality and the lack of it leads me to pray that what-ever structures of mission arise in the future, they will be allowed to follow the principle of Christian private enterprise, rather than official church con-trol."

MISSIONARY CONTROL Figures published elsewhere in

this issue snowing support given to C.M.S. by the six Australian States give rise to a number of important questions.

Why is it that Western Aus-tralia, with a vastly greater Anglican population than either S.A. or Tasmania, has only been able to send out two C.M.S. missionaries in six years?

A second question is related to the first. Is it coincidental that Tasmania and W.A., the only two States to insist on unifying and centralising missionary acti-vities in their areas, are at the lower end of the scale? Tasmania has its Overseas Department and W.A. has its Provincial Mission-ary Council. In the other States, C.M.S. has its own secretariat.

We do not profess to know the answers, but it could well be that as in the case of other parts of the Anglican communion where unified and centralised control of missionary represen-tation has been tried, it has suc-ceeded in all cases we know of in inhibiting missionary interest. ' It would help to have the case

put to show that it is not true in Australia. Until the mission-ary councils in Tasmania and W.A. prove otherwise, many who are devoted to the great mission

After hours 53-7377 I think it would be a good thong if our gullible students from St. Francis College instead of using their intellect as did their patron saint, Newman, used the guidance of Holy Scripture as their eyes are enlightened by the Holy Spirit.

Then they will not be worry-ing about Prayer for the Dead nor will anybody being taught fables at our Colleges, but they will be preaching and teaching the Truth our Lord taught. We will then no longer hear about Prayers for the Dead as asserted by the brains of men but of the living life in God.

When we trust God, our Maker, to deal with us and our loved ones as He sees fit, only then will we know that enriching of Spirit which truly comes from God. In Revelation Ch. 7:14-17 is the answer to Prayers for the Dead.

I would also say to Ann Deve-reux, that in God's mercy the "drunk" has more chance of re-demption than thousands in our Church today.

Prayer for dead Though not every word of the

Homilies need be taken as auti.o-ritatively binding on Anglicans, it should be remembered that Article 35 commends their doc-trine as godly and wholesome. The Homily on Prayer, to which your correspondents from St.

Francis' College, Brisbane, refer in their letter supporting prayer for the dead, condemns this practice on two related though not identical grounds — first, justification by faith alone, which implies that everyone dies in a state either of salvation or of condemnation (that is, beyond either the need or the reach of prayer), and second, the fact that Scripture does not support the doctrine of purgatory, which is clearly intended in the context of the Homily to include any kind of purification or further ipiritual progress after death.

This may explain the omission of any explicit condemnation of prayer for the deed from the 1571 version of the Articles. Ar-ticle 11 teaches justification by faith alone and Article 22 in its final form condemns purgatory, and a particular reference to prayer for the dead could have seemed redundant.

I suggest that this is at least as good a theory as that of your correspondents, since it is impos-sible to reach consistent conclu- I sions by arguing, as they do, from omissions from the succes-sive versions of the Articles. For example, earlier versions con-demned the doctrines that the resurrection is already past, that on the death of the body the soul sleeps or dies until the last day, and that everyone will finally be saved. These con- demnations were later omitted, but that does not mean that the Convocations and/or Queen Elizabeth I changed their minds about the doctrines concerned.

Prayer for dead May I make the following

comments on the letter from the students of St. Francis' College?

The reference from 2 Timothy 1:18 can hardly be classed more than an expression of earnest desire on the part of St. Paul that the kind act of Onesiphorus towards himself may be remem-bered on Judgment Day. As, however, many expositors do no conclude that Onesiphorus was in fact dead—I understand the Fathers, Theodoret (393-458) and Chrysostom (347-407) con-sidered Onesiphorus was with Paul at the time (the students can check their library)—and considerable support exists for the feeling expressed in our Homilies "neither let us dream any more that the souls of the dead are anything at all helpe.i by our prayers," in the interest, of Common Prayer may Cisi,i grant our worship to be free from such contentious issues.

My suggestion is that with which the Homily conclude, that we get on with the job ,e praying for all those for whom we are commanded to pray. I personally have a hard enough job praying for the living who need prayer support than open-ing up the infinite realm of those who have died!

I find this difficult to believe, since Article 35 declares them to "con-tain a godly and wholesome dos; trine necessary for the times" and further requires them to he "read in churches by the minis-ter diligently and distinctly, that they may he understood of the people„

Article 11 is said to be "more largely expressed in the Homily of Justification," so it would seem that the St. Francis' breth-ren have to take Bishop Jewel's "Homily concerning prayer" seriously after all.

They also assume — wrongly —that evangelicals depend on isolated texts for their dis-approval of prayer for the de-parted. Let them see our posi-tion is based on the finished work of Christ and that we do not pray for the departed for the simple reason that there is no need. This is exactly the posi-tion taken by Jewel in his Hom-ily. "Godly and wholesome" doctrine indeed!

Total ignorance Your comments on holy war

(A.C.R., Oct. 30th) reveal total ignorance on your part of the Palestine tragedy.

Comments asyours, do not help the servants of Christ that are battling for the souls of men in the refugee camps of the Palestinians, but rather cause a serious setback in their work. I wish you would show your comments to any one missionary in the area, and see what he tells you.

You seem to be too much concerned with statements made about the destruction of the so called Israel; but you and many other church leaders have never shown the least concern about the injustice inflicted on the Palestinian people, and the des- truction of their identity. These people had been driven out of their homes and for 21 years have been living in agony in

refugee camps. Why do you turn a blind eye on them, and seem only worried about the aggres-sor?

It is your responsibility as an editor of a Christian paper to search for the truth, and present the true facts to your readers and let them make their own judgment. In this way you will help those battling for Christ in their work to ease the sufferings of the refugees among whom they work. The comments you made will cause a great setback to Christianity.

May I suggest that you read the statement entitled "Consulta-tion on the Palestine Refugee Problem," made by the member churches of the World Council of Churches at their meeting in Cyprus on October 4, 1969. This is obtainable from the Inter Church Aid Dept. of the Aus-tralian Council of Churches. I am sure that after reading it you will change your policy about the Palestine problem.

Clarification In your report on Sydney

synod (A.C.R. 31.10.69) you refer to the Wollongong and Parra-matte areas and state, "By ordi-nance St. Michael's Wollongong and St. John's Parramatta . . are to beprovisional cathedrals of the two areas which will become separate dioceses within the next decade."

Unqualified statements such as this are making a full and proper understanding of the situation unnecessarily difficult for every- body concerned. It must be clearly borne in mind that in the case of Wollongong ten years is a target date by which a new diocese may be established. It may be longer, it may be shorter, and furthermore at some time during the 10 years, or at the

Linguistics at Brisbane early this year was Rev. David Thomp-son, art A.B.M, missionary chap-lain to aboriginals at the Lock-hart River Community.

This morning in the College chapel. the students were addressed by Rev. Frank Rob-erts, an aboriginal evangelist working with A.B.M. — a man of quite definite evangelical con-victions.

Mr Roberts warned that "black power" ideals could well be adopted by the disillusioned aboriginal young people, just as Communist cells are already being formed amongst them. He stresssed the urgent obligation of Christians to take to Aborigines the transforming gospel of Christ.

Prayer for dead The letter front the students

of St. Francis' College with re-gard to prayers for the dead, reveals indecision in their aPPeal for evidence.

Along with Scripture are aligned "as weight of evidence," the early fathers, Zwingli, Angli-can divines of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the vast majority of revisions outside Canterbury and York (and Cran-mer, too?!)

Next we take note that the Homiles condemn such prayers for the dead, but the students then tell us these "do not repre-sent the opinion of the Church of England as a whole." Further-more (it is their private opinion that) they are not "a basis for forming doctrine." So they allow one source of historical theology and will not accept another which itself, indeed today, does not represent "the opinion of the Church of Eng-land as a whole."

Their judgment is made with appeal to "the Church of Eng-land as a whole" and "the main stream of Anglican liturgical thinking" which possibly they might say comes to us from the "divines" of history. Is then our appeal made to the majority vote, in controversies of faith? And who is to be judged a "divine"?

Well, if the Church of England as a whole believe statements of faith about which the Scripture is silent, we had better have a change of mind! (Even if we call it narrow Biblicism.)

Historical theology has its purpose, but if it must be refer-red to at all, then, under those terms of reference, why, in this controversy of faith ignore Article 20 which is on contro-versies of faith (and which you, Sir, might append if this letter is printed). Or will there be ob-jection, since this official doc-trine of the Church of England is not the majority vote, and as Lambeth 1968 would say should be left printed in the Prayer Book, but only regarded as a doctrinal antique. We are at present preparing tentative budget for 1970. Th total budgeted expenditure seem likely to be' about $209,000. Of this, we have budgeted for $1,508 for grants-in-aid—less than .8 o I per cent! This small amoun consists of three items, each con nected with work for which we have a long-standing and tradi tional responsibility.

I can assure you that at the moment B.C.A. is not facing the temptation to become a mere supplier of money. To meet our missionary commitments in 1970 we will need a huge increase in income. Should we ever be so tempted, it will only be because men and women with a love for the Gospel have failed to respond to the call of Christ.

Andrews' Hall, Melbourne the Church Missionary Society, Professor Basil Brown, Chair-man of the Australian Baptist Missionary Society gave s brief survey of the situation facing the outgoing missionary and stressed the difficulty, the opportunity and the urgency of the task today.

He said that in the light of the urgency of the task many people ask why there should be the de-lay of special training for it. He quoted the words Dr. Chalmers of Scotland, when asked why his son, who had offered for mis-sionary service, did not go straight out to the work rather than wasting time in further studies. Chalmers said, "Two woodmen went out to their work. One felt it a waste of time sharpening his axe before going out, and thus toiled all day with a blunt axe. The other spent half an hour at the beginning of the day putting the best edge possible on his axe, and then went to work. Which man's work for the day would be better?"

Professor Brown illustrated from what the "sharpening of the axe" might mean for the mis-sionary candidate, the prepara-tion to communicate the gospel of life in the way that people of another culture, of another religious background, might un-derstand and grasp.

Those in training at St. Andrew's had displays of the work in the different fields to which they are preparing to go, North Australia, Peru, Tanzania, Kenya, and S.E. Asia. Nine C.M.S. candidates have already left St. Andrew's this year for their work (in Iran, Tanzania and N. Australia). Twenty more hope to leave at the end of this present term. This is the sixth year of the work of St. Andrew's Hall in training mis-sionary candidates for the C.M.S. of Australia and New Zealand.

THE BRIDE'S FATHER gave away his daughter from his hos-pital bed at St. Andrew's Hospi-tal, Brisbane, when Miss Eliza-beth Mann was married to Mr Richard Wilson on October 14.

Sir Alan Mann, Chief Justice of Papua, New Guinea, collapsed in his Port Moresby chambers and was flown to Brisbane for specialist treatment. He was at-tended by a doctor and three nurses while the Archbishop of Brisbane carried out the mar-riage ceremony of his daughter at his hospital bedside.

Mrs Nicholson was ill for 29 years, and wrote 900 poems. Her Christian faith and unremitting pain give an immediacy and fer-vour to some of the writing in this collection. There are four heroes in this second book, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and they con-tend with the "Honest to God" school, Teilhard de Chardin, and not least David Eccles himself. They do so because, as he says. "they rank with the greatest masterpieces in literature or painting." This engaging, lucid writer offers some stimulating and disquieting reflections on the Old Testament, and a very posi-tive comment on the communi-cation of the New Testament which merit attention, not least for the sake of his understanding of I'. His treat-ment is clear and penetrating. The excellent chapter on textual criticism extends the scope of the book to the New Testament in general, and the helpful dis-cussion of the authority of scrip-ture embraces the whole Bible.

It is regrettable that in a con-cise treatment. necessitating in the main summary statements, the radical position is so often adopted without question.

These volumes are in the Baker series designed to provide archaeological background for general readers of the Bible.

Dr Pfeiffer has, in his enlarg-ed volume on the Scrolls, pro-vided a sound and readable sur-vey of this increasingly complex subject. A balanced, though con-servative, approach treats pro-blems positively and fairly. This book is commended as an excel-lent introduction and guide to the non-specialist.

Larue presents a broad and generally satisfactory review of Babylonian history and culture from about 3000 B.C. to A.D. 363 with more detailed treat-ment of selected topics, such as law and Nebuchadnezzar's city. Brevity sometimes tends to be misleading and some errors occur (e.g. Nabonidus for Nabo-polassar pp. 51, 60) but, in gen-eral, the volume should prove useful.

A disturbing book, written in the hope that God may grant reformation, revival and construc-tive revolution in the orthodox, evangelical church. Like Dr Schaeffar's two previous books, this should stimulate concern for this post-Christian world of ours and help us redouble our efforts to reach it with the gospel. Historic and biblical Christianity is related to the intellectual and cultural questions which trouble modern man. He doesn't deal with theories or theology but challenges us to action.

THE EVANGELICALS by John C. King. Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1969, pp. 159. 90c. The former editor of the Church of England Newspaper exposes evangelical blindspots without being aware of his own. It will do us good to see ourselves as others see us and where his criticisms are deserved, as they often are, it will aid the self-examination. process. While Mr King was editor of C.E.N.. it was

scarcely noted for the strength of its evangelical leadership so it is predictable that in this book he generally writes abs it "them," rather than "us." Sometimes he gives a caricature rather than the reality and too often he gives free rein to his many dislikes. It should be remembered that he writes about Evangelical Anglicans in England only. He seems unaware of the existence of any others,

Out of 24 pages, he devotes 15 to the preacher himself. The rest looks at the message of the preacher. Few will like his thesis that most failures are those of the man who preaches but all must meet his chal-lenge about their own personal life and their devotion to Christ and their daily walk with Him. end of 10 years, it may be clear that some alternative scheme will be preferable, such as regional administration without actual separation into a new diocese.

In the case of the Western part of the diocese it is equally important that the alternative be kept in view, especially as no possible date has been envisaged. But the options are clear, either separation of a new diocese OR an area of delegated respon-sibility and local admini-stration but still part of Sydney diocese. A great deal of mis-understanding will be avoided if these alternatives are kept clearly in mind.

Healing Like Rev. P. Hobson (ACR

13 Nov.) I agree that the Bible is authoritative for Christians. But I must disagree that we can therefore expect, as implied, heal-ing of sickness in this life.

The error, I believe, in his letter is to attach all the bene-fits of salvation (a better phrase thantotal victory) to life on earth. Scripture does not promise healing to the people of God on earth. Healing, physical death and the presence of sin will be done away with in heaven, not on earth (Revelation 21).

St. Paul's experience was that God said "no" to his prayer for healing (2 Cor. 12). God may graciously heal in response to prayer but he may in love say "wait for your full salvation in heaven." We cannot say God's will is for healing here and now in every case.

To suggest to people otherwise may add spiritual anguish to un-relieved physical suffering as well as for example, "Is my faith de-tective?"

Synodswomen by 1972

Women are expected to be eligible for election to the next Sydney synod in 1972.

Synod expressed the view in 1968 that they should be and asked the Standing Committee to prepare an ordinance to make that possible. An ordinance was not brought before synod this year, as had been expected.

The Standing Committee re-ported that a committee of Pro-vincial Synod was preparing such an ordinance, which would in,

before that synod and the synod of every diocese in the Provint. of New South Wales in the rust 12 months. It was confidently es petted that all the synods would agree to the proposal. After th the N.S.W. Parliament would asked to pass amending legist, tion.

For that reason the Standing Committee suggested that the matter should he stood over for a year, especially as, apart from casual vacancies, no further elec-tions will he held until 1972.

for the past twenty-four years. He is the son of a rector and a member of a well known Tas-manian family whose record of service to the diocese extends over many years.

It is a source of great satis-faction to note that in spite of the very heavy demands of the Parliament around the corner he is able to spare some time to be with us in the Parliament of the Church.

The Bishop also spoke of his hopes that a Trade and Industry Mission might be set up in Tas-mania. He said:

We should remind ourselves that the church and its members must live and bear witness in the world as it really is. This means recognising the realities of an urbanized, industrialized, tech-nological society. It means com-ing to grips with the problems, needs and attitudes of those who belong to it. The Inter-Church Trade and Industry Mission does not see its role as that of merely supplying chaplains for industry. It is an attempt by the church to fill a vacuum in important and significant areas of human endeavour.

This outreach is meant to enable the faith and actions of Christians to be more effective in places where they work.

Let us not overlook the fact that man at his work is in an ecumenical situation and there-fore nothing less than an ecumenical ministry is adequate for this task. I do hope that synod gives full support to the proposal to set up an Inter-Church Trade and Industry Mis-sion in Tasmania because I be-lieve that in the process of change which is going on around us, God is creating new condi-tions and new opportunities. In response to the Holy Spirit and in obedience to the gospel the church must organise itself for the mission in the contemporary world.

Perfect gothic cathedral BLACKErS Cathedral Church

of St. Saviour, Goulburn, N.S.W., is Australia's most per. feet example of Gothic architec-ture. At least this claim was made by a correspondent to 'The Sydney Morning Herald" this month.

He went on to say that this cathedral is, perhaps, the most perfect church building in Aus-tralia and is the only cathedral in the world built of white stone. He claimed that Slackers origi-nal design envisaged a tower and that the diocese had some $80,000 towards such a project.

The correspondent, Mr Nicho-las Browley, of Palm Beach. N.S.W., complimented the autho-rities on their careful preserva-tion of "a national treasure" and spoke of the fine stained-glass windows and hand-carved oak furnishings. But he seemed very put out that the tower remains unbuilt.

These two books are concern-ed with relationships, the first majoring on the perils of promis-cuity, the second on marriage as the development of persons-in-relationship. Mrs Burns casts her material in the form of ques-tions and answers, actual ques-tions and no-nonsense answers which meet many of the current issues of the new morality.

I found "Inscape" pretentious at first, the English language pushed to outrageous limits in attempts at profundity. Never-theless, the peculiar contribution of modern theology to the pri-macy of personal relationship and respect for persons is given interesting and persuasive ad- vocacy. P. F. Newall. This book should be read by every evangelical who is con-cerned about the multitude of unchurched people living in ur-ban areas. Sociologists and Bib-blical exponents discuss the effects of urbanisation on family life, morals, religious belief, in-ter-personal and inter-communal relationships.

In the U.S.A. these problems have reached crisis point and could do so here unless checked. Christ wept over the city of Jerusalem and Christians ought to follow His concern, dedicate their talents and so help sanctify modern urbanised communities.

It is precisely in these situations That the availability of the Bible, or of portions of it, in the languages of the people becomes infinitely precious. For here is no inducement: a man is free to read and ponder and make up his own mind. And truth itself is, by its very nature, missionary. Ensure only that the gospels take their place in the bookstalls and public libraries alongside the Bhagavadgita and the Quran and 'Das Capital; and the Christian mission will go on "

starts off with the assumption that "the observable facts of the material world and the Biblical revelation must agree." Where there is apparent conflict, the cause may be a faulty interpre-tation of the Biblical revelation, of scientific theory which will not ultimately prove to square with the observable facts of the material world. With this the Christian who takes a conserva-tive view of the Bible will agree. The book says much that is help-ful about the limitations of the scientific way of understanding, in the spirit of C. S. Lewis'na-ture' and `supernature.' It is per-haps unfortunate, however, that over half the book is given to questioning the probability of current evolutionary theory, when for many conservative stu-dents of the Bible this is not seen today as an area of neces-sary conflict between Science and Scripture. The munificent J. L. Walker bequest has enabled the diocese to pay off the debt on St. Boni-face's Cathedral, which was built in 1962. Over $157,000 is now invested in shops, shares and mortgages and the endowment income will mean-that the Cathe dral can be adequately cared for in perpetuity.

Sydney Cathedral appeal passes $100,000

The St. Andrew's Cathedral Restoration Appeal, which is be-ing made throughout (he Cathe-dral's year of centennial celebra-tions, has now passed the $100,000 mark, It is hoped that all intending subscribers will send in their donations as soon as possible.

The National Trust of Aus-tralia has joined with the Cathe-dral Chapter in sponsoring a public appeal for $500,000 for "the restoration of St. Andrew's Cathedral and the fixed furnish-ings within, and to ensure for the future the structural safety of the Cathedral as a national heri-tage in this country's developing history."

Synod had little legislation be-fore it but a highlight was a vigourous debate on religious in-struction in secondary schools, The Diocesan Board of Religious education brought forward three motions aimed at improving the quality of R.I. Another motion asked for support for the Board's experimental scheme for R.I. in metropolitan high schools. Although ail four motions pas-sed, Rev. David Collier said that the new scheme was funda-mentally inept, despite its good intentions.

Bishop Porter is 45 and was born at Hurstville, N.S.W., and educated at Canterbury High School, St. John's College, Mor-peth and Moore College, Before ordination he served in the Signal Corps of the 2nd A.I.F. and was ordained for Ballarat diocese. He served in New Guinea 1950-57 and was award-ed the O.B.E. for rescue work after the Mt. Lamington vol-canic eruption in 1951.

He married in 1954 and has two daughters. His recreations are gardening and reading.

Heenan had talked to the mem-bers who had wanted to meet him for some time. The occas-ion was taken, he said, to ex-press their desire for a better understanding with Rome.

Mr Simmons admitted that the idea of a uniate church had cer-tainly been considered by the society. "The responsibility for whatever stem we take in future must rest with those who resur-rect the Anglican-Methodist scheme in its present form," he said. He admitted that a uniate church had been discussed, but he felt it would be improper to give the Cardinal's comments without his permission.

One delegate present said that the Cardinal had been "slightly icy" about the question of a uniate church.

Another member of the group said that the visit to the Car-dinal was "definitely ill-consider-ed and unhelpful at the present time." . Mr Simmons said that a Holy Cross Trust was planned to ac-cumulate capital and property for the work of the society. One London newspaper said that the society was preparing to under-take "a vigorous legal and par-liamentary battle to win a fair share of the Church of Englnd buildings and endowments if a secession crisis is forced on it."
