We would meet in the small town that my father grewup in. We would fish all day, carrying our coolers andtackle boxes from one end of the lake to the otherand back. My father and grandfather knew everyone, and everyone knew them. I would meet all of theirold friends and they would tell me how big Id

become. By the end of the day, all of the Opening-Dayfishing enthusiasts would take over Main Street andeat country-fried steaks and meatloaf. They would tellstories and say long goodbyes.

I never knew my biological ancestry because I wasadopted as an infant. Its never been an issue for me.When I think about time spent with my adopted family during my childhood, it fills the void of havingno known blood-ties to a country or people.

My wife and I are expecting a baby and I feel I have anabundant heritage to pass along to my son. Two

generations of caring fathers have shown me the wayby sharing their own traditions. Now, I get to decidewhat is to be passed on. It is not my bloodline thathas made me who I am; it is the lessons I havelearned that have helped me understand my specialplace in this world. This is how my heritage has beenre-built.
