READINGIt wasnt long before I noticed that there was

something strange about Sundance. He didnt seem

very bright and he had no common sense at all.

Someone was constantly fishing him out of thesmall creek that ran through the property. Usually

hed be found standing at the edge of the creek

with his front legs and head underwater. His back

legs were on solid ground, but he just didnt seem

to understand that he could back up. He had a

habit of getting stuck in odd places as well. We

would find him locked in a random closet or

perched in high places where he should have never

    gone.

One day, I scooped up Sundance to put him outside

and he squeaked in pain. I looked closer and saw a

large rip in his fur that exposed his muscles along

the side of his body. My heart sankhe was injured

badly. We concluded that he had managed to

wriggle away from an owl. Since ranch cats only

visit the vet for their shots, we decided to keep himinside and quiet to give him a chance to heal.

    1. List two conflicts Sundance facesin the passage.

    in this dirty, god-forsaken town.

As she neared the only general store in

Marshalville, she wistfully pictured what it had

been like back home. Although she had lived

here for two years and she knew she would

probably spend the rest of her life here,

Milwaukee would always be home. As athoughtless rancher galloped past her, she

choked on the swirling dust. Her entire body

Katya stared at her reflection in the side view mirror one last time.

The shade of lip gloss looked about right. She smoothed her pale

pink shirt. Youre making that face again, her mother said slyly.

Just because you dont care what you look like....

Katya grumbled, looking pointedly at her mothers neon green shirt

    and weird sandals.

She opened the car door and stepped out, taking a deep breath. Her

bouquet of wildflowers. She lookedgenuinely pained, as though I had broughther an armful of dead animals.
