I am 58 years old and was born and raised in Rotterdam. After 6 years in architecture, I am working for the City of Rotterdam for 32 years now. So Rotterdam is really a part of my life.

Rotterdam started around the 12th century and received city rights in 1340.Rotterdam is the second largest city of the Netherlands with a population of around 600000.Rotterdam is one of the largest sea ports of the world. The city centre is quite modern, due to the 2nd world war.

The Van Nelle factory produced coffee, tea and tobacco. The factory is now the domain of creative firms after a complete renovation. The factory is famous because of the new concepts with lots of daylight for the factory workers.

There are not very much old buildings in Rotterdam, this is an old windmill in the part of Rotterdam called Delfshaven. Now part of Rotterdam it was once the harbour for the town of Delft.

The historic mill called De Distilleerketel. The mill processed malt which was used in the distilleries to produce genever, the alcoholic traditional liquor of the Netherlands.

The length of 185 meters makes this one of the higher buildings.

The Witte Huis or White House is a skyscraper and National Heritage Site in Rotterdam, Netherlands, inspired by American office buildings and built in 1898 in the Art Nouveau style. The building is 43 m (141 ft) tall, with 10 floors, and was the tallest in Europe at the time it was built. The building is listed.

The small photo also shows the Cube houses on the right of the white house

The Cube houses by Piet Blom are near one of the oldest harbours and the white house

Next to living quarters (one cube is one house) the are shops and a youth hostel in there.

The old harbour (see photos of the white house) is now a days an entertanement area, with cafe‘s, bars, restaurants.

It’s a bit like the Fujitsu Lifebook series, a computer but with special features.
