The Rothe Erde Eddy Current ConditionMonitoring System is a bearing-inte-grated measuring system to check theraceways and radii of all designs oflarge-diameter bearings, predominantlyroller bearings, for possible damagesuch as wear, pittings and cracks.

The system can be used for new bear-ings as well as for retrofit programs.Applications for the Rothe Erde EddyCurrent Monitoring System are tunnell-ing machines, construction- or offshoreequipments.

ECMS-equipped large-diameter anti-friction bearings are linked up with themeasuring instruments via an environ-mentally protected, isolated plugconnection.

The basic requirement for running themeasurements is an ECMS ground-station providing power supply anddata transfer.

The data can either be stored ondiskette by laptop or visually displayedon site. If data processing and evalu-ation are not possible at the equip-ment site, the diskette may be evalu-ated at a central point or at Rothe Erde,respectively.

The power generator integrated in thegroundstation supplies electricity to thestationary ring with the primary coil.From here, high-frequency power is in-ductively coupled to the secondary coiland then to the supply module which islocated in the cage inside the bearingand distributes the power to the individ-ual sensors. The signal measured overthe entire circumference of the bearing(720 ° rotation) is telemetrically trans-mitted from the supply module via theantenna system of the secondary coilback to the primary coil. From there,the data are fed to the groundstationreceiver for central data evaluation.

The diagram illustrates the flow of thedata and their evaluation. The sensordata are transmitted by telemetry andthen centrally processed with particularemphasis on the simultaneous evalua-tion of the opposite raceways, therebyeliminating any influences from tinycage movements. The data obtainedare then compared with the base meas-urement or earlier measurements.

In this connection it is important toknow that the measurements will not beaffected by nonmetallic substances.Any pittings present in the grease willchange their position with each rotationand are, therefore, identifiable.

Rothe Erde ball and roller bearings areglobally recognized for their outstandingperformance and reliability in offshore-cranes.

These bearings have to meet rigorousrequirements of international classifi-cation companies and of course of theusers. The Rothe Erde Eddy CurrentMonitoring System is a measurementsystem, which is fully integrated into thebearing. It monitors the condition of thebearing without requiring any time-con-suming and cost-intensive intervention.The system is widely used in the off-shore industry since 1982 not only foroffshore cranes but also for offshore oilmooring applications like FPSO’s andfor bearing diameters up to 8,000 mmdiameter.

Retrofitting existing bearings with themonitoring system is no problem, as itsinstallation leaves the installed dimen-sions and the dimensions of the bear-ing itself intact.

It is Rothe Erde’s objective to developdesign and produce optimum cutter-head bearings meeting all requirementsof specific applications such as hard-rock or soft-rock drilling.

The selection of the bearing designdepends on load circles, shock-factor,torque, speed, etc. Small tunnellingmachines are mostly fitted with four-point contact ball bearings, the enor-mous loads involved in larger machineswill in the majority of cases, requirethree-row roller bearings. Rothe Erdebearings have proven their reliability inmore than a 1,000 cases as for in-stance in the Channel-tunnel projectand the recently commissioned Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway. The Rothe ErdeEddy Current Monitoring System allowsto monitor the bearing condition at anytime during the drilling operation. Tun-nelling machines require a very highreliability, because any repair would beextremely cost-consuming.

With this system the condition of thebearing may be checked and if neces-sary, respective measures like reducingthe forces can be taken.

The breakneck speed of development inthe construction equipment industry inrecent years, in particular with regard tohydraulic excavators, has resulted inever larger and heavier machines. Thesemammoth earth moving machines havelittle in common with the small conven-tional hydraulic excavators that we arefamiliar with and are predominantly usedas overburden excavators in opencastmining in the extraction of iron ore, coal,oil sand, etc.

They must be extremely reliable andlong-lived, even under most extremeworking conditions. It is obvious thatsuch equipment needs custom-designedlarge-diameter antifriction bearings thatare capable of sustaining these extremeloads and of meeting such high servicelife requirements, in theory as well as inpractice.

This is another application where theRothe Erde ECMS system which allowsperiodical monitoring and control hasproven extremely useful. The measureddata can be stored and compared withearlier measurements again and again.It is also possible to transfer the data bysatellite to a central monitoring station.

Offshore technology, tunnelling ma-chines and also construction equipmentdemand the utmost in performanceand structural safety from Rothe Erdebearings.

Finite element analysis has shown tobe a reliable method for determiningthe occurring stresses in new bearingdesigns as well as for analysing loaddistributions and load transfer into themating structures, that are otherwisedifficult to assess. Finite element ana-lysis is an equally valuable tool forbearing optimization.
