Brief History of RotaryFor more than 110 years, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world.

Grassroots at the core, Rotary links 1.2 million members to form an organization of international scope. It started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the

Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.

Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members.

“Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.”

Paul Harris, Rotary Founder

Service above SelfRotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad.

Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary members have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end.

Rotary’s Guiding Principles

The Object of RotaryThe Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Four Way TestThe Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do

1. Is it the TRUTH?2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?3. Will it Build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Your Responsibility when you sponsor a new member

Page 7: Rotary’s - Microsoft€¦  · Web viewGrassroots at the core, Rotary links 1.2 million members to form an organization of international scope. It started with the vision of one

Because the first three months of membership determines whether or not a new member maintains his interest and becomes a valuable member for the future, it is recommended that:

A sponsor for a new member must be responsible for his or her complete and thorough introduction and indoctrination into the club. In you absence, it will be your responsibility to see that someone else assumes your duties toward the new member.

The sponsor shall take responsibility for the indoctrination of the new member. This indoctrination should complete in three months from the date the member is accepted for membership. You should make a special effort to see that the new member attends meetings for the first three months. You should meet the new member at these meetings and see that he or she is introduced to as many members as possible. You should sit with him or her at t a different table at each meeting.

A sponsor should make a special effort to see that the new member attends whatever social events are held during these three month period and make every effort to see that he or she is introduced to other new members and has good time.

The new member should be instructed and educated as soon as possible after he or she becomes a member, and be given a complete picture of Rotary both internationally and locally. The more a new member knows about Rotary, the better the new member can co-operate and participate in its activities.

If a new member is worth bringing into our Club he or she is worth holding on to!

You should then do everything within your power to make the new member feel at home in the Club and to enjoy the fellowship and friendship of the members. New members should be made to feel a part of the club and be encouraged to participate fully in its activities. If these things are done, our Club will undoubtedly retain and have new valuable active members, and they will make an important contribution to the Club’s future success.

When you sponsor a new member and devote the time necessary to indoctrinate him/her as stated, then you have not only contributed a service to your Club, but; to your community as well, for you have given to this new member a living example of Rotary In Action.
