SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

WORK AREA

1. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents.

2. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.

3. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

1. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges or refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.

2. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

3. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.

PERSONAL SAFETY

1. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in personal injury.

2. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

3. Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position before connecting to the power supply.

4. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.

5. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

POWER TOOL USE AND CARE

1. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate which it was designed.

2. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.

3. Disconnect the battery before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

• When drilling vertically overhead, fit the rubber dust collector shown onto the drill.

5. Position the tool against the surface to be drilled, depress the OFF lock knob (10) and then squeeze the trigger switch (3).

NOTE: If using the hammer action do not start the drill until the tool is in contact with the work surface.

DRILL MODE SELECTION

HAMMER STOPYour drill is equipped with a hammer stop facility for smoother drilling. To select this mode turn the hammer control switch (7) to the position marked:

Depress the lock pin (9) then turn the drill control (8) so that the position marked:

coincides with the arrow on the machines case.

DRILL STOPFor chiselling it is necessary to deactivate the drilling action as follows:

1. Turn the hammer control switch (7) to the position marked:

2. Depress the lock pin (9) then turn the drill control (8) so that the position marked coincides with the arrow on the machine case.

HAMMER AND DRILLTo activate the hammer and drill mode turn the hammer control switch (7) to the position marked:

Depress the lock pin (9) and turn the drill control (8) so that the position marked thus, coincides with the arrow on the machine’s case.

IMPORTANT: When hammer drilling you only need to apply light pressure. Too much pressure will place unnecessary load on the motor. Check the drill bits regularly, re-sharpen or replace.

DRILLING TIPS1. Always use sharp, good quality drill bits. The performance of your drill is

dependant on the quality of the bits used.

P

2. After drilling material to the full depth, do not simply pull out the drill but maintain chuck rotation to ease withdrawal.

3. Reduce the pressure on the drill bit when it is about to break through. This will prevent the drill from jamming.

4. If drilling a large hole, first drill a pilot hole using a smaller drill bit.

5. Always apply pressure to your drill bit in a straight line and, where possible, at right angles to the workpiece.

6. When drilling holes or driving screws into walls, floors etc., always make sure that there are no live electrical wires in the path of the bit.

7. When drilling in metal, the materials being drilled can become hot. To reduce overheating use a suitable cooling lubricant. No cooling lubricant is necessary when drilling cast iron or brass as they should be drilled dry.

8. When drilling metal, the harder the metal the slower the drill speed. Similarly, the bigger the drill bit the slower the speed.

9. Always start drilling at a slow speed to prevent the drill from slipping out of the pop mark or indent, gradually increasing speed until the optimum cutting speed is achieved whilst maintaining a MODERATE pressure ONLY. NEVER force the drill bit into the work. This will overheat the tip and cause it to dull very quickly.

10. To prevent the drill bit from slipping when starting to drill a hole in metal, use a centre punch to make an indentation at the start point.

11. When drilling in wood, clamp a piece of scrap wood to the underside of the material to avoid splintering.

12. Always drill directly in line with the bit. Do not use sideways movement as this may damage the drill or cause the bit to break.

13. Large holes should be drilled with wood augers, flat wood bits or hole saws.

MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING

1. After use, remove the drill or screwdriver bit, open the chuck jaws and tap the side of the chuck to remove any dust, or chippings etc.

2. Keep the cooling vents clear.

3. Keep the handle clean and free from oil and grease.

4. Worn or damaged parts must be replaced by qualified personnel.

5. Clean the tool regularly, use a soft brush and or soft cleaning cloth. DO NOT use any chemicals or harsh abrasives to clean the tool.

P

6. At the end of work, to prevent dust deposits you should use a compressed air (max.3 bar) to clean out the ventilation holes.

7. Remove and inspect the carbon brushes regularly, it is very important to refit the motor brushes exactly as they are removed, DO NOT turn them around or swap their positions (dirty or worn carbon brushes result in excessive sparking and speed faults).

8. Always replace the motor brushes in pairs.

9. Check gearbox occasionally and top up if necessary with a good quality high melting point grease. DO NOT overfill the gearbox, apply sufficient grease to cover all visible moving parts. (page 6 shows the grease cover).
