ในชวงเวลาทยงเปนคนหนม ผมอยากเดนทางไปทวโลก แตในยคสมยนน ผมคงท�าไดแคฝนเทานนเอง โลกทอยภายนอกประเทศญปนนนเปรยบเสมอนอยหางไกลมากเหลอเกน ผมเรมศกษาาษาองกฤษในโรงเรยน เหมอนกบนกเรยนญปนทกคน ยงจ�าไดวาหนงสอเรยนองกฤษเลมแรกของผม ในหนาแรกใหเราอานประโยควา “นคอปากกาดามหนง” This is a pen. บดนเวลาผานใปเกอบ 50 ป โลกของเราไดเปลยนแปลงไปอยางมากมาย ในฐานะทด�ารงต�าแนงประธานโรตารสากลขณะน ผมไดเดนทางไปยงทตางๆ ในโลก มากกวาทผมเคยฝนไวในสมยโนน

Dear fellow Rotarians,

When I was a young man, I wanted to travel the world. But in those years, I could only dream about travel. The world outside Japan seemed far away. But like all Japanese students, I studied English in school. I still remember my first English book. The first page said, “This is a pen.” That was almost 50 years ago, and the world has changed a lot since then. As president of Rotary, I now travel more than I ever dreamed.

In every new place, I find a new language. I find new people and new customs. I do my best to learn from everyone. I believe that every person I meet has something to teach. Perhaps because of this, I feel that I understand Rotary Youth Exchange better. And I understand even better what a great gift Rotary is giving through Youth Exchange. Youth Exchange opens minds.

It builds confidence and communication. It brings together people from different countries and backgrounds.

Every young person who goes on a Rotary Youth Exchange will learn a great deal. Youth Exchange students learn how peo-ple who seem so different are really the same. They begin to appreciate what unites people everywhere. They have a broader understanding of the world. They come back as different people.

They no longer know only one language, only one culture. They have connections with their host country, and with their fel-low participants from other countries. At the end of their exchange, they are part of their host families. They are also part of the Rotary family – the largest and most international family in the world.

Rotary’s Youth Exchange program has con-tinued for more than 40 successful years and is now part of the fifth Avenue of Service: New Generations Service. This avenue also includes service through Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and many club and district activities that involve people up to age 30.

When we focus on young people, we are focusing on building the future of Rotary and a more peaceful world. When we serve youth, we help to bring Rotary to a new generation. We spread understanding among nations and cultures. We teach the importance of service to others, and pass on our core values. By doing this, we help to build peace.

Youth Exchange plays an essential part in Rotary’s global mission of building peace by helping to build, one exchange at a time, good relationships between nations.

Week, International Women’s Day, World Water Day, and Literacy Month – all signifi-cant reminders of the good that Rotarians have done worldwide.

As I’ve traveled around the world, I’ve been inspired by Rotaractors and their important contributions to the Rotary family. I’ve had the chance to work with the outstanding women who serve on our Board of Direc-tors. I’ve witnessed the incredible progress The Rotary Foundation has made on water and sanitation – an area of focus that is crucial to our growing population.

And as we begin this month long celebration of literacy, I’ve seen how Rotarians have helped empower communities with simple, creative, and sustainable ways to break the

cycle of poor education. Literacy plays a critical role in healthy and productive lives, and whether it was by volunteering at a local school, bringing language training to adults and children through concentrated language encounter and computer-assisted literacy systems, or ensuring that all children have the textbooks they need, Rotarians have helped thousands.

Our promises and accomplishments have reached a turning point: We must now look at the goals we still aim to achieve. Keep the momentum up. Get the word out. Make sure your club knows about this impor-tant month in Rotary so that come next March, we’ll have even greater successes to celebrate.

March is a turning point

The month of March provides each of us with an opportunity to reflect on Rotary’s accomplishments. It is during this month that we pause to recognize World Rotaract

Being a teenager ain’t easy. Being a teenager who’s different – from another country, say – is exponentially harder. Bar-riers of language, culture, and race can make it difficult to succeed socially as well as academically.

To help the students at one school in the Bavarian town of Fürth – 65 percent of whom are from immigrant families – the Rotary

Club of Fürth put up one more obstacle: a 30-foot-high climbing wall. The project, called It’s Time to Climb, is one of 100 literacy ef-forts that clubs are carrying out in District 1880 as part of a three-year initiative.

“Literacy is basically a question of mo-tivation. We have to first get teens excited about learning,” says Past District Governor Peter Iblher. “Climbing offers risks and challenges that students crave.”

Hauptschule Maistraße is an upper el-

ementary school whose students range in age from 10 to 16. Many come from difficult family situations that can include drug addiction, violence, and chronic un-employment. The climbing wall provides an outlet for them and boosts self-confidence, coordination, and communication skills. In the words of one student: “Not only have I learned about my own physical potential, but I’ve also had the opportunity to make new friends whom I will always rely on.”

nearby fitness center; the club raised €2,800 to purchase equipment and train teachers and other staff members in safe climbing techniques. The teachers donate their time to help students during weekly two-hour sessions. “We are highly impressed by the course’s popularity and the positive effect it’s had on our students’ enthusiasm toward their classes,” says teacher Bernd Günther.

More than 75 schools are benefiting from the district’s literacy initiative, known as Schule: Sprungbrett in die Zukunft (School:

Launching Pad to the Future). The district surveyed schools to identify their most critical problems and invited them to pro-pose projects; the most promising ideas were recommended to Rotary clubs. “The response was enormous,” Iblher says, not-ing that many clubs developed additional activities to complement the projects.

To ensure consistency and sustainability, district governors from three successive years, 2008-09 through 2010-11, coordi-nated their efforts. “We couldn’t confine this

project to just one Rotary year. It takes time to develop an idea, obtain the necessary information and cooperation, and develop a budget,” says Iblher.

It’s Time to Climb has been so success-ful that the Hauptschule Maistraße has approached the Fürth club about installing a climbing wall at the entrance of its new school building, slated to open this year. Club member Karsten Medla says the club is looking for additional funding to meet the estimated €15,000 cost.

Residents of the rural community of KwaNibela, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, face poverty and frequent water shortages. HIV is also prevalent among the 26,000 who live there.

Rotarians are helping to confront these challenges with an innovative literacy effort, arming adults with the ability to read and write while providing lessons in nutrition and health, food sustainability, and basic business skills.

The Adult Literacy Projects -- known as

KwaNibela and KwaJobe -- arose from a partnership among Rotary districts 9270 (South Africa) and 7950 (Rhode Island and Massachusetts, USA), Operation Upgrade, and the International Reading Association.

A staggering two million illiterate adults live throughout KwaZulu-Natal Province. The projects set out to teach men and women to read and write so they could participate in the economic and political activities of their country.

“Learning to read and write alone does not put food on the table, or help with issues like HIV,” says Pat Dean, director of Opera-tion Upgrade and a member of the Rotary

Club of Westville, South Africa. “But we can use literacy as a means for social change.”

Rotarians began collaborating with Operation Upgrade, which specializes in adult basic education, to train instructors on topics like nutrition and health, and to deliver an effective curriculum. Funding from The Rotary Foundation provided books for classrooms and community gardens.

Nearly 600 adults are attending literacy classes in KwaNibela, says Dean. The teachers lead group discussions on food security and health and hygiene, including HIV prevention. Topics also include social issues like gender equality.

Through the project, Rotarians have helped residents of KwaNibela form six vegetable cooperatives. Because the co-ops have contracted with traders and schools, they not only provide a sustainable food source but also generate income for residents.

In June, 573 adults took their first lit-eracy exam, and 517 passed. Dean says the classes have produced a change in the students.

“As they progress, you can see the self-esteem in their faces and in what they do – even how they care for themselves,” she says.

Dean recalls how one woman described no longer being embarrassed to take her five children to the local clinic for treatment because she can now read their names on clinic registration documents. Another woman learned to make doughnuts and now runs a thriving small business.

“This project is helping adults take steps to change their lives,” Dean says. “One woman was able to leave an abusive mar-riage because she had the literacy skills to apply for low-cost housing for herself and her children.”

Dean adds that as the residents are learning more about health topics, they

are beginning to voluntarily submit to HIV testing.

The success of the Adult Literacy Pro-jects, especially KwaNibela, was formally acknowledged in 2008, when Operation Upgrade received the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy.

“Literacy has led to a positive change for the communities in KwaNibela,” Dean says. “Adult literacy is so important in a developing country; organizations around the world have adopted this model to in-tegrate development through literacy. The KwaNibela and KwaJobe projects have proved very successful.”

Polio is history throughout much of the world—a distant memory for some, a photo in a textbook for others. For more than 25 years, Rotary International has played a major role in the fight to end polio worldwide. More recently, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary International and Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners in the fight to achieve this ambitious but important goal. Thanks to the strong commit-ment by Rotary International, the Gates Foundation,and GPEI partners, we are “this close” to eradicating the disease and ensuring that parents and children world-wide will never have to fear this vaccine-preventable disease. Rotary International and the Gates Foundation collaborate to raise the profile of polio, hold governments accountable for their commitments to polio eradication, and secure funding for polio eradication activities. Both organizations have led by example by investing over $1 billion (U.S.) each to support the effort. To support Rotary International’s PolioPlus program, the Gates Foundation issued a challenge grant of $355 million, which Rotary pledged to match with $200 million by June 2012.

Rotarians exceeded the fundraisinggoal ahead of schedule, prompting an additional commitment of $50 million from the Gates Foundation to extend the partnership. Since 1988, the incidence of polio has fallen by 99 percent. In 2011, there were fewer than 700 reported cases of polio, and in February 2012, India was removed from the list of polio endemic countries. India’s achievement is the most recent demonstration that polio can be conquered in even the most challenging environments. The world would not be where it is without Rotary, and it won’t get where it

However, three countries— Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan— have never stopped the transmission of the wild poliovirus and continue to put the world at risk of reinfection. Failure to eradicate polio could lead to the paralysis of as many as 200,000 children per year. Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are dedicated to working together until the day polio is consigned to the history books.

I am a French art director, illustrator and cartoonist.I have worked for many years in France, Switzerland, Germany, Tahiti, America, and for the past two years, here in Thailand.I have published four books of illustrations. The latest volume is entitled Siam Slices by Soukha Editions.I draw the cover sketches for the Newsletter and would like to meet anyone who needs an illustrator, art director or cartoonist.

Cancellation.The board may cancel a regular meeting if it falls on a legal holiday, including a commonly recognized holiday, or in case of the death of a club member, or of an epidemic or of a disaster affecting the whole community, or of an armed conflict in the community which endangers the lives of the club members. The board may cancel not more than four regular meetings in a year for causes not otherwise specified Here in provided that this club does not fail to meet for more than three consecutive meetings.
