NEW MEMBERS: Teresa “Tess” Mana-ay Go Born in the Philippines, Tess graduated with a Bachelor degree in Nursing from Ateneo De Zamboanga University in the Philippines. She has previously worked as an ER Nurse at Abha Hospital in Saudi Arabia, a licensed Vocational Nurse at Hancock Park Rehab Center, RN Supervisor at Windsor Gardens of the Valley, and MDS Nurse at Fireside Convalescent Hospital. Presently, she is Assistant Director of Nursing and RN Supervisor at Fireside Convalescent Hospital in Santa Monica, CA. She has joined the Rotary Club of Thai Town in January 2011.

Jittanund “JP” Pornsobhon Born in Surat Thani Province of Thailand, JP earned a Bacherlor degree in Accounting from Bangkok College and a Secretary degree at YWCA Secretary School. She immigrated to Los Angeles in 1992. Formerly employed by Siam Battery, Siam Cement Group, she has currently worked at AECOM, a Fortune 500 company, for the past 12 years. She also volunteers at Buddhist Temple of Chino Hills and participates in community services, child development activities, public health services, and neighborhood improvement projects.

Parinda “Tann” Shannari Tann was born in the Northeast and grew up in Bangkok of Thailand. She graduated with her bachelor degree in Business Management from Bangkok University. She has been living in the United State for 8 years. Previously, she owned and ran a skincare spa business for 3 years. She decided to sell her business by the time she received an offer to work at Heimberg Law Group as a Client Liaison at the Thai town branch office. She has been working for Heimberg Law Group for a year and half, and she became more involved and interested in helping and serving the community. She has joined the Rotary Club of Thai town in 2010.

Acknowledgements We would like to thank the Board of Directors, the committees, and all the volunteers who have participated in Rotary activities and helped out our community. Together, we can expand our efforts to reach out to all generations, promote peace and unity, foster our friendships with other communities, enhance our collaboration with the government (city, state, and national levels), and increase our members’ civic awareness.

Activities Summary: July 2010 - June 2011 Charitable Functions Rotary Club of Thai Town continues to support charitable and educational activities organized by our members and other Thai associations in accordance with our bylaws. In the 2010-2011 year, our club contributed to the following programs:

• Thai Town Tree Planting • Rotary Club of Thai Town Tree at Buddhist Temple of Chino Hills

• Rotary Cares Day: Community Clean-up in Thai Town

• Food for Homeless and the Holidays: Thai-American Day of Thanks

• Thai Town Music Festival • The Clean Water Project in Thailand

• Water Tanks Project in Domican Republic

• Shelterbox: Japan’s Disaster Relief • Thailand’s Flood Relief

• Compassion: Help Homeless Students in L.A. • Wheelchair Project

• Holiday Giving: C.U.R.E. (Common Unity Reaching Everyone) www.cure4ourcommunities.org • Rotary Youth Speech, Art, & Music Contests

Leadership and Training Rotary also engages in year-round leadership training activities for its members ranging from district events to PETs training, strengthening its core base of community leaders for its ongoing community and international support activities.

Community Service

Rotary Club of Thai Town partnered with various city agencies and the community to plant trees in Thai Town as

part of a beautification project.

Inspiring Our Future Engaging Our Youth

RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly – Rotary District 5280

• A Rotary sponsored weekend for high school students to develop and express leadership skills. • Friday, April 15 through Sunday, April 17, 2011 on Catalina Island. • Transportation to and from Catalina Island will be provided from select locations in Los Angeles. • Available only to High School Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors in the Los Angeles Area. • Please contact us for more information at [email protected] or (310) 890-9245 • Candidates must contact us by March 21, 2011 to be eligible.

Rotary Youth Art, Speech & Music Competition Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Thai Town

• A Rotary Club sponsored competition to highlight Youth Art, Speech and Music talent. • Monday, March 28, 2011 at 7:00pm at Thailand Plaza, Thai Town, Los Angeles. • One winner of each category will receive a $50 cash prize** from the Rotary Club of Thai Town. • Each winner may be eligible to compete at the Rotary District level for a prize of up to $1,000.00 • Contestants must be enrolled High School students in Los Angeles County to the Age Limit of 18. • All contestants must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian to attend and compete. • For more information Contact [email protected] or (310) 890-9245 • Candidates/Parents must contact us by March 21, 2011 to confirm participation.

Art Contest Requirements: • Artworks can be in any medium including photography. • All works of art should be appropriate for a general audience. • Artworks should have been created in 2010 or 2011. • All art works must be brought to the Competition on March 28th by 7pm to be eligible.

Speech Contest Guidelines: • Pick a current challenge within your family, school, community, state, nation or abroad and

answer: How can one solve this problem by using the Rotary 4-Way Test? The Rotary 4-Way Test of the things we think, say or do are:

1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

• Delivery your speech at our March 28th Competition (best if memorized). Music Contest Requirements:

• All orchestral instruments, including voice are welcome to compete. • A minimum of 4 years musical training is required. • The applicants must provide their own accompaniment if necessary (no Piano available) • Previous Rotary District 5280 Music Awards winners are ineligible.

* When inquiring ask for Reuben Lim (New Generations Chair) or Teresa Chung (Club Secretary) **Note: The $50.00 cash prize might not be awarded in a category if there are fewer then 3 contestants in that category.

Firefighter of the Year Award

Group Photo: Hollywood Fire Station #82 AWARD RECIPIENT: CHRIS MCWHORTER

Firefighter/Paramedic Chris McWhorter has been assigned to Fire station 82 for the last 2 years. In that time, he has proven to be of the highest caliber of professional we could expect to find. His

maturity level along with his attention to detail has allowed him to deliver the service to this community that sets the example for the rest. He has become an asset to this Fire station as well as to the Los Angeles City Fire Department. The people of this city are in good hands when he arrives

to their residence to help with their needs. His ability to show RESPECT to this community during stressful circumstances has carried Chris to a high level of professionalism. We are all very thankful to have Chris McWhorter as part of our team.

Police Officer of the Year Award

AWARD RECIPIENT: PETE PHERMSANGNGAM

Pete Phermsangngam was born and raised in Thailand. At the age of ten, he was sent to study abroad at Montfort Boys Boarding School in India for approximately 4 years. His family moved to the U.S. and settled in San Bernardino, California. He received a B.S. in Business Marketing from

Cal State University, San Bernardino and worked for his parents' restaurant business for a couple of years, before deciding change his career path into Law Enforcement by joining the Redlands Police Department. In 1988, he joined LAPD because of its devised cultural make up which included the

Thai community. He believed then as he does now that he can contribute to the Thai community as being a Thai, he is able to speak, read and write fluently in Thai to use in the Los Angeles Police Department. Since then, he has worked at various Patrol Divisions which includes the East L.A. (Hollenbeck) Division, Hollywood Division, Newton, Van Nuys and North East Division. During those

times, he worked in specialized units which included the Hollenbeck gangs/CRASH Unit and the North East SPU. He worked at LAPD Central Bureau Narcotics Division for over three years, in both an undercover and field investigator capacity. He is currently assigned to the Arrest and Control unit and

trains officers in both recruits and in-service capacity in Defensive Tactics. Contributing factors pertaining to the Thai Community: He has traveled to Thailand on several

occasions to train the Royal Thai Police. He assisted the Secret Service in Dignitary protection involving Thai VIPs visiting the United States. He has had, on many occasions, an opportunity to assist his Department Detectives, FBI and ICE agents in apprehending the Thai suspects involved in

committing various crimes such as robbery, kidnapping, and stalking cases, to name a few. He had assisted many Thai victims in numerous situations to either report or translate crimes that had occurred to them and their families. Many times, he assisted these Thai Victims, in their time of

need, during his off-duty hours by either giving them advice on the phone or if it involved a serious crime, by even driving out to the local LAPD Police stations to personally meet with them and assist them.
