DR. HOWARD DENBO, PresidentHoward E. Denbo, M.D., Inc. introducedDr. Walter Bortz, Past President, AmericanGeriatrics Society & Co-chairmanAmerican Medical Association’s TaskForce on Aging. Dr. Bortz shared manylittle-known facts regarding the AmericanHealth Care System. According to Dr.Bortz, America spends $6,000 per personper year for after-the-fact medical care. While that does not sound like much, it isconsiderably higher than all othercountries and buys us only the ninth-besthealth care globally. Dr. Bortz stressedthat Health Wealth, how much you valueyour own health, should be seen as atangible asset and your own personalwell-being as the most important assetany of us has. All our other possessionscan only be as valuable as the time wehave to enjoy them.

Much like rating the value of anautomobile, our health, according to Dr.Bortz can be valued using four criteria-Design, Accidents, Maintenance and Age.While there is not much we can do about

design or age, we have a lot of control overaccidents and maintenance. In fact, compared to the $6,000 it costs to treatailments after-the-fact, prevention onlycosts $4,000 per year.

A SPECIAL REPORT FROM THE PHANTOM ON “DIAMONDS TO DIAMONDS”

WELL DONE, ROTARY #2! Saturday’s “Diamonds to Diamonds” bash was one of the most impressiveevenings I’ve experienced in many years, so much so that I left a clandestine message for TESSIE that I hadto put in my two-cents worth, and no buts about it! As you all know, I much prefer to unearth gossip andscandal rather than bestow compliments, but this time I felt overcome with an unaccustomed glow of humankindness and generosity.

The Ball Park sparkled in the late afternoon light, as the setting sun finally peeked out from the threateningskies, illuminating the field and grandstands in a cloak of gold. All who observed the sight were mesmerized,

and even MY jaded spirits soared, making it just that much more fun to flit invisibly about the hanging curtains and oversizedfurniture in search of juicy reportage. No two ways about it, folks, BILL and Betsy KOEFOED and their minions scored anothergrand slam with this year’s party and auction. The PHANTOM is not easily impressed, but this one was special!

Our members and guests entered the Stadium walking along a red carpet stretching for almost a city block, and CECILECHIQUETTE gushed uncontrollably to all who would listen that she felt like visiting royalty and couldn’t control herself fromblowing kisses and waving to her admiring crowds. Even JACK GRAF was so overcome by the pageantry that he becametearful and needed to clear his eyes and nose into hastily offered hanky.

OMAR and SHOKO VALLE stationed a seasoned group of smooth and smiling greeters at the check-in desk (Tatiana Zerpa,ROGER STEINER, Carrie Whisler, and CECILE CHIQUETTE-what a capable bunch!) to put our guests immediately at easeand happy. OMAR’s little handy-dandy credit card machine bordered on melt down (and required three changes of batteries) ashis fingers danced upon the keypad like he was some kind of modern-day Paderewski, skillfully processing all the cards wildlybeing thrust at him. That pirate, BILL LASHBROOK, was laughing hysterically as he brow-beat hapless passers-by (like poorJOE BRENNAN) to dig deeply for additional auction tickets. What a huckster! But I will say this: with BILL working thedownstairs room, and Betsy mercilessly hounding the crowds upstairs, I’m certain that last minute ticket sales were an eye-opening success!

TESSIE, meanwhile, was racing from floor to floor shrieking into her walkie-talkie, making demands and giving orders andcursing with a stevedore’s language like a battlefield general under deadly siege. She certainly made things proceed onschedule, and hundreds of attendees were kept busy, either taking tours of the Stadium, engaging in batting practice on the field(a big treat for the kids) and also running the bases (I think I even saw DICK ROSEN laboriously doing so!), or exploring the silentauction offerings, hoping for good deals.

Wouldn’t you know it! Devilish STEVE TALMADGE was seen to grab a handful of KOEFOED’s treasured collector’s itemGiants hats right out from under BILL’s suspicious nose and darting away through the throng, with BILL calling loudly forsomeone to stop him-they weren’t for free, they cost good money! In the ensuing melee, I couldn’t see if STEVE made a cleanget-away or was unceremoniously apprehended and manhandled back to the table to pay up.

Our professional auctioneer, Frank Bizzaro and his family and helpers, gave a festive flair to the live auction, and manyexceptional items were claimed by the excited audience. From my secret vantage point, it seemed that lots of expensive anduncommon things were being actively bid for. FRED MARSCHNER won the fun cruise down the Mexican Riviera, and PETERCASWELL’s winning $100 ticket obtained the walnut-sized black Tahitian pearl for his lady (I assume it’s for her, unless, out ofvanity he intends to make an arresting ankle bracelet for himself). In any case, he’s known for his uncanny luck in most of thegambling meccas of the world-some le git, many unsavory-and his luck held at this auction, too.

The food was, on the whole quite good, and the wines poured with dinner were plentiful and of excellent quality and served bya very courteous wait-staff (kudos to STEPHEN REVETRIA). Of course, the usual bar-flies, MIKE DAVIES, ROARK O’NEILLand DAVE STECHHOLZ, to name a few, were deliriously happy with the seemingly endless refills of their proffered glasses bythe shocked but smiling bartender.

The only sour note that I encountered was the absence of SCOTT HILDULA from our gala affair (I had so hoped to catch himin one of his unimaginably grotesque social fauz-pas!). Perhaps next year.

As it stands, President GRANT and our Club members and guests were delighted by yet another extraordinary effort put forthby Rotary #2.
