Greetings NW Des Moines Rotarians!
Today’s speaker was Urbandale Mayor Bob Andeweg, who gave a presenta-tion on “The State of the City.” He began with a picture of the four “Uniquely Urbandale” sculptures at the intersection of Douglas Parkway and the 142nd Street round-about. This seemed appropriate, high-lighting the city’s forward-looking policies.
The population of Urbandale has increased from 14,434 in 1970 to an estimated 42,800 in 2014. At the last census in 2010, Urbandale was Iowa’s 12th largest city. A special census is just being completed. The city has updated its Strategic Plan, Comprehensive Plan and Code of Ordinances in recent years. The top three priorities of the Strategic Plan are:

Today’s Sergeant was Chuck Corwin, who quizzed the membership on the upcoming Mayor’s Bike Ride. As a result, we were reminded that our club is one of the three sponsors of this event. The other two sponsors are UCAN and the Urbandale Lion’s Club. Funds raised from the sale of registration fees, raffle tickets and of spon-sorships will provide funding for 911 signage and directional signs on the trails. The current signage was put in place as an Eagle Scout project by Zach Kobes, Joe’s son, with support from our club. Sponsors may have their company/organization name or logo on the sign they sponsor. The ride is on Sunday, May 15 from 10 am to 2 pm.

Spring is with us this week, as will be the tax deadline. Out with the old and in with the new. May we all get out there and enjoy it!
Our awards as a club keep on coming. I am honored to announce that we, Northwest Des Moines Rotary, will receive the Presidential Citation from Rotary International. This is a great recognition for our club! It is the direct result of our membership. It took our Executive Secretary Diane Downing- Nelson's time and effort in ensuring proper documentation of our membership as well as her leadership service. It took the majority of our membership donating time, service, money to the local projects like our Coat Project, Iowa Energy/Polio plus, CFUM, the Bike Ride, and many other local projects in our community. It took Mark McAndrews,
Brenda Auxier-Mailey, Penny Luthens and Dan Boes helping with Hector, our exchange exchange student from Mexico, and start-ing an Interact club at Urbandale HS. It took Doyle Sander's and Bill Corwin's persistence in updating our club’s records for the Rotary Foundation as well as other leadership con-tributions. It took Brad Helgemo researching and obtaining an International Service project for our club to sponsor. It took great leader-ship by past District Governor Diana Reed, our Helwege Integrity Award recipient. It took Ed Arnold's persistent quality leadership in fighting polio, and other leadership contri-butions. It took Jenifer Mercer-Klimowski"s constant help with the Nor’Wester and the Foundation along with other leadership con-tributions. This award took ALL of us and we should ALL be proud of this accomplishment. It has been a privilege to represent our great club. Enjoy the weather!
Items for the Nor’Wester should be submittedby end of the day each Monday. Please send to:

Polio Eradication This Week:
The third Outbreak Response Assessment in Madagascar found that the surveillance system is not yet strong enough to conclude that polio transmission has been interrupted. Thirty-nine high-risk districts have been identified to receive focused attention. There is one week to go until the globally synchronized switch from the trivalent to bivalent oral polio vaccine, the first stage of objective 2 of the Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-2018. Learn more about preparations for the switch here. Learn more about the rationale for the switch through this series of videos.

Foundation MinuteFor the week of April 11
A skeptic might ask: “How can Rotary be a real force for peace? It has no jurisdictional power. It is not a religion. It has no army of tanks, and it insists on being non-political.” Such a viewpoint looks at peace as something that can be ordered or militarily enforced, as if it is only the responsibility of governments. Rotary has always approached peacemaking systemically; it has sought to break down the barriers that cause people to point fingers at one another. By trying to understand people’s points of view and reaching across lines of race, religion, and culture to become partners in service to all humankind, tensions are reduced and friendships are increased. Humanitarian aid has been Rotary’s answer to hunger, sickness, illiteracy, and economic disaster – the seeds of conflict.
Your support of The Rotary Foundation will enable this to continue.
Thank you. (Submitted by Heidi Goldstein, Ithaca Rotary)
