Today the choir consists of a select group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. This year the group consists of over 50 members and rehearses after school. Julie Varilek has been the group’s director since 1999. Mrs. Varilek is in her 34th year as a music teacher. She has taught K-12 music in South Dakota, Loveland, Colorado, and Estes Park. Her husband, Chuck Varilek, is the school district’s Band Director. Chuck has presented programs by his high school jazz band to our club for several years. Both of the Varileks are involved with several music groups in addition to their school involvement and have been very supportive of our Rotary Club’s projects including the Duck Race and Estes Park “Sings” Both Julie and Chuck are members of the Longs Peak Rotary Club and are honorary members of our club. This Week's Program “ Mountain Echoes Children’s Choir “ with Julie Varilek

The Choir, Mountain Echoes, was originated in 1965 under the direction of Gail Fray. Today thechoir consists of a select group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. This year the group consists of over50 members and rehearses after school. Julie Varilek has been the group’s director since 1999.

COMMUNITY CORNER CAFE The noon Rotary Club is scheduled to provide the help at the Community Corner Cafe, located atShepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, on Friday, January 11. We need volunteers for thefollowing: In the kitchen 2:30 - Food preparation - (need 2) 4:15 - 6:30 - Food Plating - (need 2) 4:30 - 7:00 - Dishwashers - need 2 In the dining room 3:30 - 4:15 - Dining room set - (need 2) (persons doing this can also be servers) 4:00 - 6:30 - Dining Room servers - (need 8) 4:15 - 6:30 - Greeter - (need 1) 4:00 - 6:30 - Drinks - (need 1) 3:45 - 6:30 - Desserts - (need 1) 5:30 - 7:00 - Clean up - (need 2 to 4) If you are willing to serve in any of these positions, Earl Matson will have a sign up sheetat our Thursday meetings. Faustine Delebarre isour incomingexchange studentfrom Bruay laBuissiére,France. Bruay laBuissiére is in theextreme north ofFrance, very nearBelgium and theEnglish Channel. Herfirst host family isDawn and Ed Shields. The Shields live near the top of Pole Hill; poorFaustine comes from a fairly flat landscape near sea level, so her firstexperience in Estes Park was an eye-opener!

At home, Faustine took seven years of English, three years of Spanish,and one year of Chinese. We can learn a lot from her! She is the third ofthree children in her family. She took the initiative by herself to contacther local Rotary club to become an exchange student to the UnitedStates.

Meeting HighlightsRotary meeting notesDecember 6, 2012By Madison Casey

The meeting was called to order by President Pete Sumey. Kris Hazeltonoffered the invocation—a poem to thank the firefighters. Song and pledgewere led by Dick Broman. Gary Hazelton led the guest introductions. There were no guest Rotarians.

Guests of Rotarians: Mark Richards introduced Elizabeth Troeger fromMunich, Germany who is visiting the Richards. Jill Anderson introducedCathy Martin.

We sang the Welcome Song.

Announcements: Raffle/pool—Larry Williams reported there is $147 in the pot as we havehad no recent winners.

Salvation Army—Wayne Andersen reported that all of our bell ringing slotsfor our club have been filled with a couple exceptions for tomorrow. Forthose still wishing to volunteer Julie Phares needs some help and you cancall the phone number in the article in the newspaper.

Wayne reported on the Army’s role in our recent fire. After receiving anearly call Saturday morning that evacuees would need help, he arrangedfor a food canteen which was set up by 10:00. They evaluated using thehigh school and setting up cots but instead, offers poured in from localmotels and lodges to house people. Many restaurants donated food. Many found friends to stay with but 50 families needed a place. MarieRichardson set up a location to care for pets. Mountain View BibleFellowship was the central place and it will close tonight.

Community Corner Café—Earl Matson needs volunteers to work itJanuary 11.

Membership—Jill Anderson first thanked Wayne Andersen and RandySkeie for organizing the bell ringing and the Hazeltons for their newspaperand web fire coverage. As to membership, she will send a form to themembership by email of the paper survey she handed out at the lastmeeting. Please return to her or she will arrange to pick it up.

Exchange Student—Mark Richards said our district’s exchange studentswill have a ski weekend at Jackson Hole. He needs a volunteer to takeour student Faustine on the trip.

Parade Float—ScottThompson hyped our clubFacebook page where youcan see many photos ofour float in the Catch theGlow Christmas Parade.
