    Rotalk - Issue 20 2

Rotork is playing a key part in the expansion of the ExplorerPipeline, a 1400 mile products pipeline that delivers petrol, diesel and jet fuel from the Gulf Coast to several midwesternUSA states and the city of Chicago. Based in Tulsa, theExplorer Pipeline owners are constructing twelve new pumpstations, modifying a further twelve existing pump stationsand building a 500,000 barrel storage terminal at Illinois inorder to increase system throughput by 47 million barrelsannually.

Over 50 years of operation wassimulated in a three month timeframe.

Part of the project involves the replacement of existing gate valves andhydraulic actuators with new ball valves and electric actuators thatoperate within 10 seconds.

Explorer decided to validate the performance of the large 24inch Class600 ball valves and Rotork IQ electric actuators by commissioning ouragent in Tulsa, Flow Quip, to conduct a comprehensive testprogramme. Flow Quip designed a PLC controlled test rig thatsimulated actual operating conditions by operating the valve against1000psi unbalanced differential pressure. The valve was cycled 44times in a two hour period with additional cycles spread over theremaining 22 hours to achieve a total of 500 operations a day. Over50 years of operation was simulated in a compressed three monthtime frame.

At the conclusion of the test programme the actuator had deliveredover 20,000 cycles and, on inspection, was found to be ready formore. IQ-Insight software was utilised during the test to monitor valveand actuator performance and develop trends for analysis. Successfulcompletion of the test led to a purchase order for more than 130Rotork IQ actuators.

The Rotork actuator delivered over20,000 cycles and, on inspection, was found to be ready for more.

Rotork valve actuators forDeviceNet open networksmeet the latest ODVAstandards

Water for New York is suppliedfrom a reservoir network that isbeing constantly upgraded andimproved. As new structuresand dams are built, ways ofmaintaining the flows into thestreams that were once fed bythe watershed are beingdesigned in order to supportthe wildlife that they maintain. In addition, a reliable andcontrolled means of loweringreservoir levels over apredictable period of time isessential to defend againstthe risk of flash flooding.

The Rotork package utilisesthe Pakscan llS sequencermaster station to monitorreservoir levels, watch overthe security of the system andcontrol the flow rate into thestreams that are being fed.

A complete picture of actuator andvalve status including valveposition, torque generated andalarms present is available to thesystem controller.

Rotork helps to monitorthe level of New Yorks water supply

The first of what is expected to beseveral Rotork installations hasnow been commissioned at theWest Branch Dam, using nine IQintelligent electric actuators toautomatically control very largegate and ball valves in response todata including signals from levelsensors. The Pakscan masterstation is housed within a Rotorkdesigned cabinet which includes adisplay monitor for the RotorkIn-Vision software that provides areal-time graphical display ofsystem status, position andavailability.

The Rotork system ensures that, irrespective of rainfall amounts,

the streams will alwayshave a water source, whilst the reservoir levelcan be maximised when

the streams do notrequire topping up.

Rotork electric valve actuators are now available with theRotork DeviceNet module, enabling them to be controlled overlow cost networks using the popular DeviceNet protocol.Rotork's design is to the latest Open DeviceNet VendorsAssociation standards and applies to our entire current rangeof multi-turn and quarter-turn electric actuators, including themodulating versions.

The Rotork DeviceNet module isfitted within the environmentallysealed actuator enclosure foroptimum reliability. The modulecan be factory fitted in new unitsor is easily retrofitted on in-serviceactuators.Direct DeviceNet connectivityprovides process controlinformation as well as importantdiagnostic data that wouldotherwise not be accessible overa conventional hardwired system.A complete picture of actuatorand valve status including valveposition, torque generated andalarms present is available to thesystem controller. In addition fourdigital outputs are provided aswell as the standard open, stop, close and emergency shut-down,whilst one general analogue inputis also available for customer

connection to an external signal. To ensure easy integration witheven the simplest DeviceNetequipped host, the data reportedfrom each actuator is containedwithin an 8 byte string and controloutput data is similarly containedwithin a 4 byte string to keep datatransactions to a minimum.

Petrleos de Venezuela S.A.(PDVSA) operates approximatelyeleven thousand oil wells within theLake Maracaibo area, ten thousandin the lake itself and the rest on landin the coastal area. The productionfrom batches of an average ofseventy individual wells is pumpedto unmanned flow stations, orplatforms, for onward shipment.A very important activity, in thehands of the PDVSA OperationsDepartment, is the continuousmonitoring of each well'sproduction efficiency and qualityparameters. This is achieved byobtaining production figures(barrels/day) and quality information

    Valve automation? Q Rotork andPakscan!

Luis Benedetti from Rotork Venezuelareports on a major upgradeprogramme in the country's oilindustry.

(water and sand content) fromevery one of the 11,000 wells, every month. These figuresdetermine the condition of eachwell and are used to planmaintenance programmes.Until 1993, this massive datacollection task was performedmanually by personnel who, because of the distances involved, often needed to travel for 90minutes by speedboat to reach justone platform. There then followedthe lengthy process of manuallyswitching each well flow betweenproduction and test lines andregistering the corresponding data.In the middle of that year, following

One of the many flow station valve manifolds on Lake Maracaibo thathave been automated with Rotork Q range actuators and Pakscantwo-wire control.

lengthy and weighted technical andeconomic considerations as well ascareful testing and analysis ofavailable equipment, PDVSA beganthe process of automating theprocedure, using Rotork actuationand two-wire control technologiesfrom day-one.Existing valves were replaced withthree-way plug valves, operated byRotork AQ and Q range quarter-turn actuators and Rotork Pakscantwo-wire digital control loops wereintroduced in order to dramaticallyreduce the wiring costs associatedwith valve communication. All the

valves on each platform are linkedon a single loop to a Pakscan IIEmasterstation that is connected toa PLC through an RS485 port. Each PLC is connected to anRTU that reports by cablelessmicrowave link to the SCADAsystem located on land at theOperational Headquarters.Since 1993 Rotork has automatedover 3000 wells on 42 platforms, using Q300, AQ830 andAQ860actuators. Over the next fouryears, more than 60 additionalplatforms are included in PDVSA'sautomation plans.

working lives and need regularreplacement. In order to prolongthe service life of these valves, engineers from Ring'O Valveshave developed special forgedsteel valve bodies, offeringadvantages over the cast steelvalves traditionally used on thisservice, such as the removal of

casting defects andmicroporosities that can lead tointernal surface cracking andvalve failure.Another problem involving theoperation of the valves is thermalexpansion caused by the hightemperatures. Dramaticallyheating a fully closed valvecreates enormous stresses thatcan cause stem distortion oreven destroy the valve body, unless a way is found todissipate the effects ofexpansion. Conversely, a valvethat is closed when very hot andthen allowed to cool down mayopen slightly enough to causepotentially dangerous leakages. To overcome these problems theRotork actuators were fitted withthrust limiting bases that act likedampers to absorb the thermalexpansion without altering thevalve position. Speciallydesigned springs permit linearmovement of the valve stem asthe valve heats or cools tosafeguard valve and processintegrity.Actuators were supplied tooperate sixteen, 16" Class 600valves, requiring anopening/closing torque of1340Nm.
