Large tiled bay areas should be divided into smallersections in order to absorb substrate movementsand avoid cracks. Openings in the screed at regularspacing create the field limits . Movement andscreed joints will fill those gaps and compensatelight compression and sliding floor movements.Thanks to nice design and finsh (colours, materials) theywill be part of the decoration.

An expansion joint is an opening within a structureat predetermined locations, designed to absorbmovements of the structure.Movements are from different origins and may bedefined as follows :

- Thermal : caused by temperature changes within thestructure. Thermal movement is horizontal.

- Seismic : caused by earthquake activity beneath thestructure. Seismic movements are sudden, fast andmay be horizontal, vertical, shear or a combination ofall three.

- Windload induced: caused by high winds forcing thestructure to sway. Windload induced movement isnormally horizontal or shear.

A joint cover is a transition across an expansionjoint opening.It can be a simple cover or an insert in the openingengineered to fulfill a variety of additional functionswhich might include :

- fit a pre-determined opening size ;

- absorb thermal or seismic building movements ;

- be compatible with various surface finishes ;

- support a given load (floor conditions only)...3
