Reach for the Stars

On Friday 28th and Saturday 29th May 2010 Pupils from Reach for the Stars school of dance based in Rossington will be taking part in Dance to the Stars 2010 at the Doncaster Civic Theatre. This will be the third year pupils from the village will have performed at Doncaster main theatre. The show allows the dance school pupils to perform a variety of styles of dance including Street, Freestyle, Ballet, Tap, Modern, Cheerleading & Gymnastic dance.

The show will also feature Rossington's premier Adult Street Dance Class and the STARZZ Competition Troupe who recently won the ADFP Under 16 Team Award.

Tickets for the show can be purchased di-rectly from the Doncaster Civic Theatre Box Office by calling 01302 342349. Tickets are priced £6.50 for Adults and £5.50 for Children and Concessions. Cause for a Cuppa

Hello! By the time of publication, Easter will be a distant memory. But I hope it was a good one for you. We had a cracking day at RCBC (Rossington Community Baptist Church)

On our web site (www.communitybaptist.co.uk) I have a place for a “blog” (online journal). I would like to invite you to take a look and let me know what you think. I post various thoughts and things that happen, much relating to family stuff. I wanted to include in our time today something I posted on 6th April. I would give it a title of “Lost Chance”

I wonder if by some of the things I write, I (try to) appear to be a “perfect Dad” … whatever that is supposed to mean anyway. Let me tell you straight up, that is not the case. There have been many times I wish I could steal back some of the sharp words, body language or actions that have come from me. Today is one of those times.

Have you ever thought about missed opportunities? This morning (back to work Tuesday after an Easter bank holiday Monday) Chase (my 6 year old) got up early as usual. I got up with him and straight away he wanted to decorate the buns we had made the night before. We messed around for a short bit as yesterday I brought down a black trunk (we had used for moving) he wanted to use to practice magic tricks. The thought struck me that I could “redeem the time” by making the phone call to the bank. Chase was, for 20 minutes, trying to ask me to put on my clown dress up bits so we can play. For 20 minutes I was on the phone talking to someone who said they cared about our situation but knew me no more than the man on the moon.

After 30 minutes (of angonisingly listening to blah, blah), I put the phone down and said, OK Chase what are we going to do before I have to go? “I want to watch a DVD (the one I gave you while you were on the phone)” “… OK … can I sit with you?” “No, when I sit on your lap, my bum goes to sleep” That’s the first time, ever, that I remember Chase saying he didn’t want to sit on my lap. … a lost chance THANKFULLY, I learned something and had a great time yesterday with Chase on our trampoline as we had a bbq after church.

As the year progresses, we will soon be thinking about our summer holidays. When we go away from home, many of us send postcards to our nearest and dearest, but when were postcards first used?

The golden age of postcards was a period of nearly two decades extending from 1900-1918. They had been circulating on the Continent for some years but only became popular in this country when a standard size was agreed with the postal authorities.

It was a time of great change, following the death of Queen Victoria, when the country moved into the 20th century. Photographers and artists traced the events of the changing world through the medium of the pictorial postcard. Events and people jostled for the postcard pub-lisher’s attention, from electric trams, motor omnibuses and flying machines to Tariff Reform, Home Rule for Ireland and polar exploration. Every contemporary craze was recorded – Diabolo, roller skating, ping-pong. The special postal rate was one halfpenny, and deliveries were much more frequent so cards were carried and posted upon the slightest provocation with messages like “Hope to be home in time for tea this afternoon”, much as we would use mobile phones today.

The light-hearted gaiety of the Edwardians was overshadowed by the Great War and events of an unprecedented kind were recorded through the picture postcard.

Quite suddenly, the postcards golden age died, in 1918, with the end of the war, when the postage rate dou-bled. Coloured cards all but disappeared and dull sepia views set the pattern for the next twenty years.

Rossington was portrayed in picture postcard form, mostly in sepia. Old village scenes were popular, and these were followed by cards showing the colliery and parts of the new village. Pictured are two examples of postcards of Rossington.

Hot on your heels…. Just over a month ago the dreaded Achilles heel

was on everyone’s lips as it ended David Beckham’s hopes of competing in what would

surely be his final World Cup. Suffering an Achilles rupture, Beckham is ruled out of play

for 3 months as he rehabilitates the injury. So, what predisposes someone to Achilles rupture?

The Achilles is the largest tendon in the body. Withstanding loads of up to 12 times body

weight, the Achilles is the strongest and most powerful tendon, yet incorrect footwear, poor training techniques, and muscle imbalances all

contribute to its downfall.

Achilles pain should never be over-looked. It is important to seek advice early as

symptoms can be easily treated and a rupture may be prevented. Achilles tendinopathy is common in middle-aged athletes and those increasing their activity levels dramatically.

Symptoms to look out for include stiffness within the tendon following activity, progressing

to soreness first thing in the morning and a gradual onset of activity limiting pain.

Treatment may include ice, anti-inflammatories, ultrasound and physiotherapy.

Locating the cause of the problem is key to resolution.

Another thank you this month for all our guests who attended our Sportsmen’s dinner at Doncaster Golf Club on the 14th of April. It was a fundraising event to be proud of, even if we do say so ourselves. Our guest star speaker ex-England cricketer and England Test Selector Geoff Miller, was superb, and lived up to all our high expectations. And even our very own President Phil Thomas couldn’t out do comedian Josh Daniels, but it wasn’t from a lack of trying!

We would like to express our appreciation to EVERYONE who helped make our “Hope for Haiti” day a great success. The day turned out brilliantly and we raised approximately £400 towards the rebuilding efforts in Haiti. It was great to see a real community effort with a number of people and organisations donating time and material to make it all happen. Well, Rossington people have been ignored yet again!! The RAILPORT is to go ahead!! I feel that a Public Inquiry (as requested by the Parish Council) would have allowed any negativity (or not) to be aired and any interested party would have had the chance to find out whether this swathe of concrete and pollution on Greenbelt farmland will be worth it or not.

Our local MP Caroline Flint lobbied in Parliament stating that Rossington people wanted the Railport, therefore a Public Enquiry was unnecessary. It's funny how these MP's and Developers manipulate figures and statistics.

Rossington people are being promised 5000 jobs and a link road to the M18/Airport, but from the meetings and events I have attended, this is bending the truth. DEMOCRACY!!??

Rossington Cricket Club – May News

By the time that this article is published the 2010 cricket season will be a couple of weeks old and in full swing however at the time of writing the First XI preseason friendly against Haxey was the only game that had taken place and so there are still no results and performances for me to bring to you at this stage but certainly next months article should be packed – touch wood! The preseason friendly did give chance for some of our new faces to settle in before the season properly gets underway and new First XI skipper – Stewart Groves (rejoining from Tickhill after 8 seasons away playing in the Bradford and Yorkshire Leagues before more re-cently in the South Yorkshire Premier Division) the chance to see his new charges in action. Other closed season player transfers include: Chris Broughton from Barnby Dun – Chris re-turns after 10 seasons away and scored 1000+ runs for Rossington in the 1995 season, James Needham from Sprotborough – James has played briefly for Rossington before but has played most of his cricket in the Yorkshire League with Doncaster Town and Peter Mawdsley from Doncaster Town who has most recently played in the Central Lancashire League where his university studies took him. Adding players of this calibre will certainly strengthen the senior teams overall and provides the much needed competition for places in the First XI. Stewart takes over the captaincy from Brendan Simpson who has stood down to concentrate on his administrative roles within the club.

The clubs pre-season preparation were thrown into some disarray when it was found that the adverse weather had caused some damage to the internal plumbing in the pavilion and a re-sulting problem had gone undetected for some time, we hope that the resulting damage is not terminal but for the time being have moved next door into the new changing facility at The Welfare whilst we assess how to best rectify the problems caused in our own facilities. On a brighter note we have had the balcony area fixed and this is back in use with help from local builder Danny Johannesen and fencing from Darren Steels and the preseason race night held at The Welfare was attended by 65 guests and raised approaching £400 for the clubs junior fund, thanks go to sponsors on the night: Kev Binks, Ronnie Quinn, Roy Nelson, Barry Johnson, Eric Price and Roy Groves for their welcome support!

Barry Johnson Effective Policing - we have a dedicated Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. We just need to ensure everybody knows how to contact them (01302 385338) and when the monthly PACT meetings with residents take place (see notice boards). Crime is down, let's keep it down. Getting Rossington moving – The Inland Port which should create 3,000 or more jobs has been given planning approval by Doncaster MBC and the Minister has given it the green light, so let's welcome this opportu-nity to get jobs into the village, not reject it out of hand like some people who should know better. New jobs – The colliery that once proudly employed 3,000 is shut. This brown-field site could create 2,000 new jobs and provide new homes for local people; including 600 affordable homes. FARRRS – Is now desperately needed and I will support it all the way, don't let a few Luddites try to stop it. This will open up the South of Doncaster bringing jobs and facilities to the benefit of all. Safer Roads – The Police know that certain roads like Stripe Road and West End Lane are dangerous and vehicles are travelling too fast and are doing their best to make sure the speeders don't get away with it! Opposing Conservative Cuts - the Tories are trying to panic people into accepting huge cuts to national and local services and to our NHS now. The recession is over and any Tory cuts too early would delay or even dash any hopes of a full recovery. It would cause more job losses and hardship here in Rossington and I will oppose it. Ensuring the recovery - the financial propriety of the Prime Minister will bring us through. The financial crisis was a worldwide phenomena not of our making, caused by greedy bankers. If the rest of the world praises and follows the Prime Minister's advice, then so should we. Voting Labour is the only sure way of ensuring a full economic recovery.

Rossington Parish Council News

This is the first item in what will be a regular feature in this magazine that will help keep everyone informed about the business of Rossington Parish Council.

At the meeting held on Tuesday 13th April the main item raised in the Public Forum was the nuisance being caused by some teenagers around the new play area, recently completed by Doncaster Council, off Atterby Drive. After a general discussion the Parish Council was informed that steps had already been taken by Cllr Milner who is also a D.M.B.C. Councillor to coordinate some remedial action involving D.M.B.C. and the Police.

In the main agenda Cllr. Chandler expressed his thanks to members of the public who attended the “litter pick” in the Holmes Carr wood area recently, before the Council went on to set its priorities for the coming municipal year, the main ones being:- - The Restoration of the Good Neighbours meals service for the elderly. - Continuing the strengthening of the Parish Councils influence - working with D.M.B.C. - Increase Allotment provision - Promotion of Rossington Market and local shops. - Campaigning for the protection of green belt land and wildlife - Improving flood awareness and flood defence within the village. - Promotion of Parish Hall facilities.

The Parish Council was informed that the Government had decided against a Public Inquiry into the proposed Inland port. The Council had objected to the scheme on the grounds that it would be built on greenbelt land, it could significantly increase the risk of flooding in the river Torne valley, and it would significantly increase both noise and air pollution from extra road traffic along the M18 corridor. The Council accepted the Governments decision with regret noting that the interests of big business and the local M.P. had taken precedence over the concerns of the people of Rossington.

On a lighter note the Council was addressed by young Olivia Shuttleworth who thanked the Council for providing financial support which enabled her to compete in an International gymnastics competition in Malta recently. Olivia proudly showed the medals that she had won, silver for the beam and bronze for the vault. Olivia told the Council that she had recently competed at national level and had been invited to return to Malta this coming summer subject to being selected in the team. The Chairman of the Council said that all of the Councillors were very proud that they had been able to help finance Olivia’s trip and hoped that she would go to greater things in gymnastics.
