ART TRAIL 2017

The Open Studios and Art Trail hasgradually become a major fixturein the Rossendale events calendarand we’re pleased to see that theArt Trail increasingly draws visitorsfrom outside of the Valley. We’realso continuing to see a wider andwider range of art formsrepresented in the Open Studios,as the painters, print makers andsculptors have been joined byceramicists, calligraphers, glassengravers, photographers andmetal workers.

This year we’re also includingsome of the events that are beingheld in conjunction with the OpenStudios. These activities includeworkshops and other creativeevents leading up to the weekendof the studios opening.

We would like to thank all of theparticipating artists for theirgenerosity in opening theirworkspaces, and whose individualfinancial contributions haveenabled us to produce thisbrochure.

This is a festival of Mad Art, MadTheatre, Mad Culture, Mad Music andMad Film demonstrating that illnessdoes not take away our creativity or

intellect.

During the run up to the festivities anumber of related courses will be

delivered at the college including “Arts 2Heal” – a six week course focusing onvisual arts culminating in an exhibition

within the festival.Also “My Story” – a six week course

focusing on the spoken word and theatrewhich ends with a performance closing

Inspired by looking closely at the moorlandsthat encircle the valleys of Rossendale and theancient husbanding skills of farmers who takea harvest from the hills we three have eachtaken textiles, text, stitch and photographs tointerpret and record in our different styles.

I start with a lump of clay and an animal. I try toimagine the world through that animal’s eyes as itsurveys its territory- does it feel scared, defiant?Does it have a partner to watch its back? I look atthe shapes it makes doing this. Then I try to bringlife to that lump of clay.

Mike Kelly was born in Rossendale and hasexhibited extensively in the North West. Hiswork is in many public and private collections.

I have been with Globe Art Studios for 23years, originally at Globe Mill, Burnley RoadEast - in Waterfoot. Preferring working inwatercolours at the moment, after workingoutdoors and teaching me the truth andshowing me the colours that exist in nature.

Ruth Evans work explores man's relationship withnature. The seen and the unseen. The endangeredand the undiscovered. This year she will beshowing new work with her 'Nest' series, they area lyrical look at habitat, home and the act ofbuilding in nature.
