Spring Grove was chartered in 1845 as a non-
profit cemetery. Encompassing 733 acres, 15
lakes, a waterfall, and over 44 miles of winding
roads, Spring Grove remains a beautiful piece
of Cincinnati history. In 1987, Spring Grove
adopted its current name of “Spring Grove
Cemetery and Arboretum”. From the begin-
ning, landscape design was an essential part of
Spring Grove’s development. Today, there are
over 1,200 different species of trees, shrubs,
and perennials labeled for study. Included in
this collection are both National and State
champion trees and the patented Spring
Grove Dogwood. In 2007, Spring Grove
was designated a National Historic Landmark,
a distinction that only five cemeteries in the
nation hold. In 2010, Spring Grove started
a horticulture volunteer program. Many op-
portunities are available including invasive
species control, annual/perennial bed main-
tenance, and woodland preservation. Please
contact Spring Grove at 513-853-4941 or
The entry gates are opened at 8:00AM and
locked at 6:00PM. The Main Gate only is
open until 8:00PM throughout our extended
summer hours on Mondays and Thursdays
(May 1 - August 31). When visiting the
cemetery, please park your vehicle along the
right side of the roads, keeping the vehicle on
the pavement. Public restrooms, located in
the foyer of the Customer Service Center,
remain open during regular gate hours. For

ROSES
Roses are a well-known perennial, usually in the form of a shrub
or climbing plant. They belong in the genus Rosa, within the family
Rosaceae and over 100 different species of Roses exist. Most
often grown ornamentally for their large and showy flowers,
Roses have long been cultivated in formal and residential gardens.
Many roses are accompanied by a strong scent, while others may
have no fragrance at all. The edible fruit produced is called a rose
hip, and can commonly be found in teas, jams, and soups.
Most of the roses in the Spring Grove Rose Garden are Hybrid
Teas, a popular cultivar group of modern roses. They have long
stems, with large and shapely flowers, each containing 25-50
petals. As such, they are commonly used as cut-flowers and in
floral arrangements. Hybrid Teas were first introduced in 1867
by crossing a Hybrid Perpetual with a Tea Rose. They became
largely popular in 1945 with the introduction of the ‘Peace’ rose.
Since then, over 10,000 hybrid teas have been bred. They prefer
sunny sites, and well-drained fertile soil; and pruning and fertilizing
are usually required. Hybrid Teas are known for their repeat
blooming, as they will flower continuously throughout the season.

ALL-AMERICA ROSE SELECTIONS
Many of the selections grown in this garden are All-America
Rose Selections Winners. AARS, is a non-profit organization
which puts roses through a challenging two-year test and trial
program in order to determine the best garden selections.
They judge the roses on qualities such
as disease resistance, flower color,
maintenance needs, fragrance, and
growth habit. An AARS Winner is sure
to be an outstanding performer in
the garden. To learn more about All-
America Rose Selections, please visit

ROSES AT SPRING GROVE
Roses have a long history here at Spring Grove, and are a
unique and important part of our landscape. Spring Grove
began cultivating roses in the late 1930s, and even had up to
700 Hybrid Teas in the Rose Garden at one time. Many of the
past superintendents have been members of the American Rose
Society, and Spring Grove has often hosted the Cincinnati
Rose Seminar. Today Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, Floribundas,
and various shrub roses such as Knock-Out, Lovely Fairy,
and Chuckles, can be found throughout the grounds. The
roses display a vast range of colors, fragrances, foliage, and
maintenance needs. Spring Grove trials many different
varieties, the majority of which are rated 7.7 or above by the
American Rose Society, a very good rose to grow.
