Rosalie's collecting interestsbegan with dolls, but as withmost collectors, the dolls led herdown many other paths of studyand worlds of collecting. Amongher "peripheral" interests arepaintings and just about anyvisual art depicting children, preferably with dolls, of course! The Museum walls are filled withbeautiful paintings, etchings andprints, both antique and modern.
Among my personal favorites,is an oil on canvas which wasfirst exhibited in our “Fashions,Fashions, Glorious Fashions”
C h a n g i n gG a l l e r yexhibit. Thisquite large(59" x 40")portrait of alittle boy andg i r l ,presumablybrother andsister, waspainted byJ . T .
Steadman, of England, in the1880s. Steadman's subjectsincluded genre, interiors, farms,
At long last –dare I say it? -summer. Ah, but how could wenot delight in the long-lastingblooms that our cool springbrought us? And where else toescape the 90 degrees weNorthwesterners just can’t “warmup to” but the comfortable airconditioned Doll Museum? Ifyou attended the opening of ourUntinted Bisque exhibit, it is timeto return as several more of thesewonderful dolls have found theirway into the cases. And if you’relike me, the manufacturers ofthese dolls aren’t all that easy toidentify on a first try. It takes afew introductions to theircharacteristics to clearly have that“ahaa!” moment when it becomesquite evident that this doll isdefinitely an ABG or that one isa Simon and Halbig. But, oh,how satisfying it is when thatpoor unknown beauty finally hasan attribution. And again, wethank Mary Krombholz and allthose who so avidly research onour dolls’ behalves. It is one ofthe joys of collecting to fill in asmany missing blanks as possiblein the history of our dolls. Theydeserve it and it is our

boats, and of course childrenand portraits. Fortunately, afterthe Fashions exhibit closed, thispainting found a permanentexhibit space in the Museum'satrium.
Another painting that Iespecially love is an earlyVictorian oil, artist unknown, ofa young child observing abutterfly. The painting wasacquired from the estate ofSeattle residents Mr. and Mrs.Ervin Hyldahl, major collectorsof eighteenth century French toearly Victoriana art. It is one ofseveral paintings permanentlyexhibited in the Museum's RoseRoom.

Among themodern ar t,the wonderful,w h i m s i c a lcreations of
Bob Byerley have been a"magnet" for children of all ages, both male and female, eversince their installation at theMuseum. Byerley, a "painter ofAmerican childhood," uses aninnovating lithography processto reproduce his original oil onboard paintings. Shown here is"Gone Fishing” depicting a veryproud gir l with her catch, dressed in doll clothes much to
the chagrin of her older brotherstanding by with his catch, undressed. This is one of twoByerley works exhibited at theentry to the Modern Gallery.
We are enjoying a perfectlygorgeous, sunny summer inSeattle. A beautiful time to visitthe dolls, the paintings, and somuch more!

Our Spring Newsletter sawour group departing thedelightful Josselin Doll Museumin Brittany and heading to theoutskirts of Paris for our guidedtour ofVersailles. Ihave concludedthere is no wayin this shortmissive todescribe the art,the beauty, andthe historywithin thosewalls. Ongoingrestoration of the building andart will ensure the preservationof one of the world’s mostamazing treasures. While someare offended by the history ofthis opulence and the few whoenjoyed it originally, millionstoday are privileged to partakeof the artists’ work of that timeand the stories they told.

A lovely coastal drive and a fondfarewell to France brought us to the “littlejewel” - Monaco. Each time I travel there
I find something more to love about thisenchanting country that stands on a fewacres of land stretched between Franceand Italy. The doll museum there is in thegood hands of Curator Daniele Norcentiniwho, with a small staff and a fewvolunteers, has managed to bring itswonderful collection of fashion dolls andaccessories to their best in years andmaintain the amazing automata.Additionally, the crèche collection scenehas been completely restored.Unfortunately, one room of the museum

lies less with “old things” andmore with modern in thisthriving country. Make it apoint to travel to see the MuseeNational de Monaco while it isstill intact.
The Prince was out of townso we enjoyed a Palace Tour atlong last in yet another royalresidence. A hotel overlookingthe Princess Grace Rose Garden, time in the world famous casino,a friendly Italian dinnerbetween friends, and thenbefore we knew it, we were offto another country and anotherworld – Italy. Florence- food, the Uffizzi, David, food, TheDuomo, shopping on “TheBridge”, food. We walked formiles and could have gone for
miles more in this city thatnever ends yet is so compact. But Bologna awaited us and alsothe newest of Doll Museums.Only that could have drawn usaway.
