Foreword

Rosa Reef Resort Rosa Reef Resort is a resort under the company Rosa Reef Corporation. It was founded in 1989 by a team of five people, : Duong Nguyen, Hung Nguyen, Chan Joo Kim, Khanh An Vu, and Veronica Lai. Since Then, Eco-tourism and sustainability have always been points that the company strives for in achieving, hence the mission statement of Rosa Reef Resort:

Rosa Reef Resort's mission is to provide the most memorable and genuine experience of Bora Bora's nature, culture and people to visitors from all around the world. It is also our top priority to preserve, protect and promote Bora Bora's

beautiful natural/local environment, and wildlife through sustainable measures. Our board and staff hope to accommodate visitors with the best service and experience through a variety of activities with the locals and the

environment for the most reasonable price during their stay in Bora Bora.

The missions statement helps to emphasize the direction for the resort to go in to achieve sustainable tourism. It also acts as a guide, not just for our resort, but for others to know what we strive for and what eco-tourism encompasses and hopes to achieve as well. It is with this mission statement that the resort’s goals originate as well, with all the principles connected towards true sustainable tourism and development for Bora Bora, and the people that come.

Rosa Reef Resort’s Goals1. Minimize impact and changes made to the native environment and the inhabiting species; more specifically, minimize

negative impacts (direct and indirect) on the local human community and ecosystem2. Raise environmental and cultural awareness and respect towards Bora Bora3. Provide positive experiences for both the guests and the locals4. Provide direct benefits for the locals and the conservation of the environment and ecosystem provide for the

economy and tourism of Bora Bora5. Be as much of a real self-sustaining resort as a financially sustainable one

The rationale behind our goals are that it will bring us closer to achieving real sustainability, and to provide eco-tourism. The goals correlate with the resort’s mission statement to help develop the country and people of Bora Bora, while not eliminating the country or culture of the people who were here before us, as well as to provide new/memorable experience and memories for the people that come to Bora Bora, and to raise awareness about Bora Bora, the environment and culture, as well as eco-friendly practices.

Eco-TourismIn this world, tourism is a growing industry that is attractive to many, and this includes eco-tourism as well. It is eco-tourism that looks past the need to make financial gains, but also looks at the ways to promote and practice economic and social sustainability. The land provides advantages, but not everyone repays the land and tries to conserve it in the interest of the local community.  The task of running an eco-resort is a hard one, in the way that it is hard to fulfill and balance out being environmentally friendly, with the inclusion of having a positive impact on the local community, and making financial gains. The involve-ment of both the staff and the clients are important running the eco-resort to allow it to give the clients a genuine experi-ence that can come from Bora Bora, as well as preserving and helping Bora Bora and Rosa Reef Corporation to de-velop. It is when three aspects of sustainability as been achieved, that it can be called real suitability, they are: environ-mental sustainability, social sustainability, and economic sustainability.  Rosa Reef Corporation believes that we can take modern advancements in science and technology and what nature provides to make eco-tourism and sustainable tourism happen, and be here for future generations of Bora Bora citizens and tourists.

The different components of real sustainability (1)

Real sustainability is the motor behind eco-tourism, and is what the resort strives for and what the resort’s goals are centered around. There are three equally important parts that make up real sustainability, which are all shown above: economic, environmental, and social sustainability. These points will be addressed in this handbook, along with the jobs that the resort requires, and what is to be expected by the employees. This handbook is designed for

the employees of Rosa Reef Resort, and or people affiliated with Rosa Reef Resort or are interested in the way that the eco-resort functions.

Management and Eco-Tourism Management of this resort is an incredibly crucial role in the progress that the resort makes towards our missions statement and fulfilling all the resorts goals to become a truly sustainable and be a part of eco-tourism for Bora Bora. There is a lot of work that management does with other crucial roles in the company, particularly with design of the resort. Management plans and looks at the different ways to be more sustainable environmentally, socially, and economically by looking at and managing what happens in the resort on a small and large scale. The staff are chosen to reflect the resort and Bora Bora, but also are chosen because of what they can contribute to our plans on being eco-friendly. Bora Bora was chosen as the place to build our resort because it was a place in which sustainable tourism can thrive, and where Rosa Reef Resort would be able to be a role model for real sustainable tourism. Keeping balance between the 3 sectors is what management has to do, as well as communicate with other roles like the activities coordinator to manage ways to be sustainable and varied with the activities; the management also works with the staff to motivate them to work. Management also works closely for the resort to achieve its goals and follow the mission statement to produce a resort that is sustainable and able to draw people to come and experience something genuine and refreshing. There are also many points that arise from management that has to do with the way the clients and the staff interact with each other and interact with the environment. This is key in promoting sustainable tourism and conveying the message that the resort works towards eco-friendly tourism and encourages both the clients and the staff to act appropriately with the environment. This encouragement can be linked to raising awareness and pointing out the responsibilities that we, as people, have to the native land and the native people.

Methods to Reach Our Goals

Environmental Sustainability

Water

There are many processes that Rosa Reef Resort has in place to work towards environmental sustainability. Many would not be seen in many other resorts and hotels in the world, such as our non-electric waterless toilet. The name itself explains how this big step in environmental sustainability. The lagoon water near the resort, the prized natural resource of Bora Bora, has to be conserved. While it is not a nice thought, sewage that gets released into the lagoon has many terrible effects on the marine life and plant life, the people that use the water, whether it be directly from the lagoon or from wells, and to the way that others view Bora Bora and its environment. The way that the toilet works, is that it is a composting toilet that does not re-quire water to function, what it needs instead is aerobic bacteria to decompose human waste into harmless, pathogen free waste that can be used as fertilizer. The toilet that is used by the resort is BTS 33 Waterless Toilet by Biolet, and is designed for 2-3 people, and is not hard to install; the training that is provided for our employees. There are both electric and non-electric versions, but the electric would be better for the resort, because of the possible complications and means to get more energy for the toilet, due to the location and sustainable goal of the resort.  Something else the resort does, in terms of water conservation, is filtering lagoon and collected rain water for the resorts gardens, both normal and hydroponic. There are private gardens right next to the guests housing, but there is also the dream gar-den, where food is also farmed. Filtered lagoon/rain water would mean that bottled water would have to be used for the farming, and would support growing food in Bora Bora, which is signifi-cant because agriculture is not a very strong area in Bora Bora, just below fishing, but Bora Bora still as to import many staples; the staple foods that the resort purchases are both local, and if it has to be imported, then it is fair trade. There are different levels of filtration at the resort, there is the first, not as precise filtration that uses more simpler methods, such as traditional water filtra-tion using rocks and carbon or solar desalination, but the other filtration uses technology by Zuvo. There are many different water

filters that are manufactured by Zuvo by the installation into every single room might not be good, because it is a great effort and demands testing the water to ensure that it is completely safe. There are also financial components to think of, which is why the powerful Zuvo filters are used in the kitchen to clean food and dishes. The hydroponic farming would also use the filtered water, and this is even more effective than filtering water for the dream garden, because of all the benefits of hydroponic farming, and would be taking advantage of the resource that is provided by Bora Bora, and use it in order to reduce the need to import food stuffs for the resort. There are also no use of genetically modified crops or plants by the resort, because if it happens that it cross breeds with Bora Bora's native plants, it would be bad for the way that the environment is right now and change it a lot; this also allows the resort to know that some of the foods that are being served are organic for sure. However, it would be possible, instead of using just the lagoon/rain water that has been filtered, to use 'grey water' as well. It may have been that shower water would be able to be filtered for toilet water, but because the toilets are waterless, it is possible to filter laundry, plate, and shower water for the gardens. It would be risky to use it for other means like the sink water, but it can be nutritious to crops/plants, especially with the choices that the resort makes about the use of cleans-ing products; shampoos and dish cleaners and the like to not have any toxic chemicals. The filtered rain water and grey water may be used for cleaning certain things, like floors and bikes, but the safety of both the guests and staff come first. The resort also measures fresh water usage and other filtered water usage to evaluate ways in which the resort could be more sustainable or compare the difference in the different times of the year in order to know how much water would have to be brought to the resort in the future years. It will be hard to make sure that any filtered water, either by natural means, such as rock filters, or commercial filters, is 100% safe for the consumers. It is not a nice thought to have to have to take bottled and distilled water from other companies, but that is a step that the resort has to take for the safety of everyone.

Another step towards safety in the future for the environment, is that during construction, specific paints that do not contain lead or other dangerous elements or compounds are chosen. Dangerous chemicals may stain the land and water, and lead to damages in the future to the environment, animals, and people. This is key, be-cause with the way that water is in the world today and the conflicts that are being held over them, it is felt that water is an extremely valuable resource that needs to be treated well and needs to be protected for future generation, not just in and for Bora Bora, but for the world as well.

Energy and EnvironmentThe lights outside are cut off after 11PM, and are allowed to be turned on again at 6 in the morning. This is because most people should be in by this time, and so energy does not have to be on for the lights on the roads. Energy for the air-cons and the lights within buildings will be on, but it is still advised that the main lights in the rooms be turned off or dimmed, this will definitely be done in the lobby as well. The reason why the lights outside is because of an issue that is

not usually looked at, this is light pollution. Light pollution would also disrupt the view of the stars and the atmosphere the resort strives to create.

Many other resort that are in similar places like Rosa Reef Resort try to become more environmentally friendly by installing a sea water air-conditioning system. However, it would not be effective because of the great length of pipes that would be needed to be built underground, because of the way that the housing is spread out. The way that that Rosa Reef Resort approaches air-cons, is that it uses a solar air conditioning system. This system takes advantage of the 7-8 hours of sunlight throughout the year; one of the best benefits of this system compared to a normal air conditioning system, is that there are no CFCs, the ozone depleting substance, released, and so a lot energy is saved from not using the com-pressor as much. Is a much more environmentally and economically friendly change because a lot less pollution is cre-ated from the solar powered air con, but it would also be very good and efficient in Bora Bora. The many hours of sun-light and heat translates into the fact that it is quite hot in Bora Bora, and it would be especially hot if the guests come from places that are generally more cooler. This means that air-cons may be more popular than fans, and since it is also important that the resort has business, the solar powered air-cons are good components of the resort that many others do not have, making it stand out as a more eco-friendly de-cision the resort makes for both the environment and the guests. There is an emer-gency backup generator in the hotel as well, but this really is emergency when the solar power power us not enough for what the guests really need. This is more for during the stormy times in Bora Bora, but if the storm does not block so much sun-light, it is possible for solar powered technology, like the air-cons, to still have enough energy to last through a day or two of weak or no sunlight.

The solar panels are also used to heat water. The electric buggies the resort uses to move luggage to and from the lobby uses solar panels as well, to minimize the carbon dioxide emissions and reduce the need to gain energy through other non-renewable ways. There are no televisions or radios in where the guests stay, in both as a way to be eco-friendly, but also to allow the guests to experience the peace that was promised at our resort; this also lowers the need for so much

energy and use of non-renewable resources. LED light bulbs are used by the resort, and are much more environmentally friendly when com-pared to incandescent light bulbs, with a 16-20 Watt LED being able to produce as much light as a 100 Watt incandescent light bulb. Also compared to another energy saving and environmentally friendly light bulb, compact fluorescent light bulbs, the LED is more beneficial in the long term, though it is more expensive in the short term. This is because of the lack of mercury in the LED light bulbs, which is a haz-ardous material in fluorescent light bulbs, as well as the total financial and energy cost of the LED light bulbs are slightly better than all the other light bulbs in the long term.

A possibility to reducing air pollution is to ban smoking at the resort. This small change may not seem like much, but it will make a difference in the long run by restricting possible damage to other clients and the staff, as well as the natural environment of Bora Bora. There probably won't be a problem with the staff to stop themselves from smoking, as it probably is not a big part of the local Bora Bora person's life.

In the resort itself, we have gone to great lengths to become an eco-resort that would not just inform and raise aware-ness about the environment and Bora Bora, but to build it in such a way to be a part of the environment and function in a way that does not only take, but give back. The different recycling bins around the resort provide ways for both guests and the staff to make a small change in the way that they approach throwing away trash so that the impact it has on the environment is not as harmful as it can be. Instead of throwing away banana peels and having to drive food waste to a land fill, it is possible compost the food waste into fertilizer for the many gardens or coconut trees and other trees that the resort plants or is close to the resort. While there is a cost for doing this, it is much better than the cost of having to transport the food waste to dumps and landfills, which may just be filled with other trash from both the locals as well as other resorts and hotels; this is also a much better alternative to burning trash, which may release many dangerous emmisions. There will also be a bin for recycling paper. The resort has devised a way to reuse paper before it has to be taken away to be recycled, which is to provide the guests with paper to write their thoughts about their experience to be put on a board in the lobby. Recycled paper is the paper of choice in the resort for writing letters and notices to the guest and staff, and the paper in which the resort uses, even to print this handbook. There are also recycling bins for glass and cans and the like as well, allowing the guests to feel that there are choices of them to be environmentally friendly, and will serve as a subtle reminder that they can contribute to recycling and they do have the oppor-tunity to at the resort.

The planting of trees and of plants in order to preserve the native plants of Bora Bora also contributes to reduce the net total of the resort's emissions, as well as support the local vegetation and present it to the guests, as well as keeping the natural environment similar what the staff would have been use to. The planting of trees, like palm and coconut trees along the shore, helps to stop soil erosion, which is an unseen danger to many shores in the world where tourism is starting to take over. The trees will act as atoners for the sand to prevent it for slipping away and being eroded, but the resort has made decisions on where to plant the trees so that the natural view that the guests see from their houses are not entirely blocked. Informing the guests to not feed the wild life human food is justified with a similar reason, because of the impact it would have on the wild life, both physically, and in the way that they behave.

In addition to solar power, the resort also takes advantage of using coconut oil as a biofuel, as well as using the waste vegetable oil from cooking as biofuel. Coconut oil can be extracted through the use of modern technology, but there are also more traditional and timely ways to extract the oil so that it could be blended with other biofuels and kerosene to at different ratios to create a more efficient fuel. The blend of fuels creates a much more environmentally friendly fuel, where the more coconut oil is used in the blend, the more environmentally friendly the fuel can be. The maximum effect when 100% coconut oil is used is that it lowers smoke by 75% and carbon dioxide release by 15%, but 100% coconut fuel is not used for efficiency reasons. The fuel can be used for cooking food instead of using fossil fuels, or for the shuttle bus to and from the resort. The cooking itself will be done using a solar community cooking system, which is effective because of the sunlight Bora Bora gets and the variety and large portions that can be cooked without letting of dangerous gases. The fossil fuels used in other methods of cooking can be subtracted from the total emissions of the resort, as well as

Coconut Biofuels

Palm trees; the resort will organize and plant more

what it would have taken to get the fuel, whether it be coal or natural gas, to the resort. The solar community cooking system, is a great way in making cooking more environmentally friendly, especially with the large number of meals that can be cooked, and the fact that the resort also supplies the staff with meals, seeing as how the resort is quite far away from the local community.  Other coconut products can be made as well, but what the resort does is promote coconuts through local goods. This can be in building the houses by using coconut rope, decorations, and many other uses. For each stay at the resort, there is a complimentary dried coconut that can be decorated in any way by the guests and taken back with them. This is part of the resorts plan to be both environmentally friendly, and express the culture of Bora Bora in a unique way as well.  Storing food can be tricky though, especially when taking into account the hot weather in Bora Bora. However, once again, it is possible to take advantage of the sunlight and use new methods to use solar power. It is possible to create a solar fridge that does not need the help of additional lead containing batteries to keep the fridge cool during both the day and at night and can take temperatures that sometimes arise in Bora Bora for a few days if there was no sunlight or power at all. There are also no CFCs, engines, or moving parts for it to work as well, really it just needs water and sun-light; it is possible to also use this technology to keep other things cool, like maybe certain medicines.  The restaurant, with the solar community cooking system and putting waste vegetable oil to a better use, contribute to making the resort more environmentally friendly. There are many ways that it is eco-friendly, with some of the ideas already explained, such as the solar cooking methods, but the way that the cooking of the food and where people eat can also eat is also eco-friendly. There are two restaurants, one that is more of a formal sit down to eat, while the other are spread out tables in the dream garden, eliminating the need to install air-cons and build more buildings for the second dining option.  The design of the buildings are not specified in this handbook, but the buildings are the way they are and placed where there for many reasons. They are made mostly out of renewable and local resources, and the construction does not use

large construction machines, but employs local workers. Some of the reasons derive from environmental factors, such as cooling and nice views of the lagoon. At the sides of the roads are tiare flowers, the national flower of French Polynesia, which grow up to four meters in height. They grow at the sides of the roads to discourage trampling on the other flowers off the road. There are also signs to inform what cer-tain plants and trees and flowers are, in order for people, anyone, to see the plants differently and not to trample on them after knowing what they are. There will also be signs saying not to trample or ride over the flowers and such as well.  It is hard to make the pool completely eco-friendly however, as it

needs water and needs to be sanitized for usage. However, there are eco-friendly product available to use for pools that have been considered and are used in our pool. The big thing about the pool that makes it very eco-friendly is the salt

water chlorination system, in which salt water, the lagoon water, can be pumped and pass through a process that sani-tizes the pool water without needing to add additional chemicals. The water is also being taken from the lagoon as well, and can be recycled and reused, and does not have to be heated, as the temperature is hot/warm outside year round. When having massages, the spas themselves are very environmentally friendly in the way that it is constructed, and the openness of the spa. With only two walls and curtains, there are naturally lights and winds with a view of the lagoon while having a massage. It is also a way for guests to soak in Bora Bora and feel relaxed; this

More Management   Some of the choices and decisions of the resort are influenced by the goals the resort has for sustainability are to provide both the guests and the staff with bicycles to use, and choose to use local and natural soaps, repellants, and to take the extra step to ask to use biodegradable packaging materials when things are imported or find companies that use cleaner and less packaging materials, and other biodegradable products toilet paper. The packages that food is bought to be supplied for tours is all biodegradable, made by the company EcoPackStore. There are a large number of different bio-degradable products that are manufactured ranging for food containers, to biodegradable peanuts that alternatives to styrofoam when shipping fragile loads. Most decorations are locally made, as well as many of the materials to build the buildings (some materials are recycled), which also contributes to the local economy and shows the guests the local cul-ture without being too intrusive. The prices of the different housing is different, partly because of the differences in the style inside of the houses and the view from the houses, and this all helps to show the importance of culture in Bora Bora, and that the environment is not the only thing that is special about Bora Bora.  Much of the maintenance and what the resort does is to provide incentive for both the guests and the staff to be more eco-friendly. In the rooms of the guests, there will be non-electric counters of how much water they use and how much electricity they use. Everyday, the counter is reset as well, but before it is reset, if the guests have not used more than a certain amount of electricity and water, then there is a prize of a free meal for two in the dream garden. This, in a way, acts as an incentive to use less, along with the signs and assurance that the towels that are hung up and that the bed linen will not be washed, unless asked, will enable less use of water, and will make people more aware of their water and energy usage. There will be information for everyone about how much they have used and how much the hotel has used, and this can be used as an incentive or as motivation to be more environmentally friendly and save more the next day. Additional incentive for doing this, is that if the guests use less than a certain volume of water, they will receive a coupon for a free meal. This is also very similar to what the resort does with bedding; there are signs

Directly in the lobby, there is a monitor that shows a collection of videos. Many of these videos are related to the environment, and are used to raise awareness about conserving the environment and the eco-system of Bora Bora, as well as the culture of Bora Bora. The videos will display the environment, and warn about ‘souveniering’ plants and animals and shells from Bora Bora, and the importance of not doing so in relation to the eco-system and the country. The lobby is also the only place where the guests will be able to connect to wifi. There are no other places, like in the houses of the guests, for nearly the same reason as why there are no televisions or radios in the houses. It is so that the guests will be able to enjoy their time without technology constantly being there, but of course, the resort understands the need for technology and being connected, which is why the wifi is free in the lobby.

Social SustainabilityThe resort would not be running if it weren't for the 140 people who are employed to work full time at the resort. Social sustainability is one of the goals that we have as a resort in eco-tourism, and is one of the most important aspects for Rosa Reef Corporation. Providing positives experiences for the staff as well as the clients is what we strive to do to help Bora Bora develop as a country and to empower the local people in the country that they live in. Not all the employees have to be directly from Bora Bora however, there will be some people in management, for example, that might be from overseas, who have studied ways for being environmentally friendly and other management methods. Everyone is given insurance, as well as training for their specific job; the jobs are like groups, and the and the different groups would inter-act more with each other, but Rosa Reef Resort encourages interaction amongst staff members outside of work to build better bonds between everyone.

The different groups are:

Job People

Grounds maintenance 10

Spa/yoga 20

Housekeepers 15

Electric/mechanical maintenance 10

Security 15

Managers 5

Lifeguards 5

Receptionists 5

Cooks 20

Waiters 25

Additional staff (information, buggy driver, med-ics…) 10

There are many reasons for the number of people in each of the jobs. One of the reasons why there are quite a lot of people working at the resort in general, is to provide more jobs for the local people, in which they can learn and develop new talents and to be able to learn more about the advances the world is making in technology and being eco-friendly, while being near their home. There are not too many people working because the resort also has to think about the fact that the resort will not always be fully busy, and the resort will not be firing people just because it is not the high season. The people in each of the groups will have closer bonds with the other people in their group, but the resort does want the entire staff to be comfortable with each other and to embrace any differences that there might be amongst them.

Rosa Reef Resort is determined to make work pleasurable and be beneficial for our staff, and there are many ways that we do this. There are 2 very large dorms around 200 meters away from the resort area that is constructed similarly to the guests, but are much larger and with many rooms in the building; it is similar in the way that the resort has constructed it to be eco-friendly, allowing people who chooses to stay at the dorms to practice being eco-friendly and proving incentive to be environmentally friendly. Bicycles are supplied all staff members, and the members who live in the dorm may use the bicycles to get to the dorms from the resort and back. On the other hand, staff members who may not want to live at the dorms have the opportunity to take the shuttle bus that the resort has that runs on bio-fuel as a means of getting to

and from the resort for free. There is also a kind of staff lounge in the lobby, which is for staff use. This is for during the day when certain members are not working the shift, or are resting. This is to encourage the fact that everyone can rely on one another, and that rewards do come from doing work and that the work they do at an eco-resort towards sustain-able and eco-tourism is important. It has already been mentioned before, but all employees will also be trained specifi-cally for their job, but there is also compulsory training for everyone. The compulsory training includes English, first aid, basic technology, ways to be eco-friendly and how the resort is eco-friendly, and being healthy (eating well and hygiene). The salary is also quite fair, even if the different groups earn different amounts of money, however, no one will be fired if it is the low season or there are not many guests staying. More emphasis is put on rewarding teamwork and accomplishing goals and working towards the resorts goals and mission statement, rather then giving consequences to the work that is not done and can be improved.  It is asked that people who come do not give tips directly to the employees, but to use the box in the lobby for collecting tips. This way, the extra money can be distributed for all the employees, not just the ones that are able to see the guests more often. It is possible though, for, if one month, a group has to do extra hard work for some reason, that they get a bit more extra. There are also dif-ferent shifts that employees can take, in case there are times when one cannot be there, the number of people in each job would still allow for the group to function. There are weekly meetings with all members of the work group, and a representative with the managers, to discuss anything that might need to be discussed, and to reflect on the resort in terms on how, if it needs to, improve to fulfill it's goals. There is also a monthly event, which is a mix between re-viewing the resort's goals and the importance of the employees work, and teamwork in problem solving skills and other active activities.

Of course, the staff are allowed time off work, but not all at once, and this is definitely allowed, just not excessively at the resort, because of the importance of cultural/religious events in Bora Bora. Something similar can also be said for the people who live in the staff dorms; it is possible to go to the mainland or wherever their family might be, but it is important to do high quality work at the resort as well. There will also be occasions when the resort will participate in local charity even and other events of the sort, whether it supports the environment or people. These are important, because it would allow the resort to give back to Bora Bora and to appreciate and provide direct benefits to the people and the environ-ment.  The resort will not micromanage everything all employees do, that is a bit too much. Instead, what the resort strives for, is through all the training, that the employees are more driven to be eco-friendly and provide the best service that they can, especially after learning the resorts more specific goals. This will lead to development in the skills of the staff for both working in the resort, and for later in life as well; this might be different than what they would do if they are locals that go though life and previous jobs differently, but the resort does want the resort to develop sustainably, and this might require the locals working in a new setting, which is why there often is communication and meetings amongst the staff and the different job groups.

Job Descriptions

Grounds Maintenance

This job does not demand as much interaction with other guests, but it is a very important job because the maintenance of the gardens and the environment is important and is possible in acting as incentive for people, not just guests, to not trample on the plants and bike off the roads. This job requires knowledge on the local plants and the eco-friendly processes of the resort, such as using grey water and hydroponic farming; specialized information grounds maintenance might need to know will be taught as a part of training for the job.

HousekeepersIs a job that requires specific training that the resort provides. This job also involves a lot of factors related to sustainability, but does not involve as much interaction as some other jobs will; however, the guests will know about who has made their room, and it is important that people who take this job regularly look back at the resorts goal and mission statement, as well as the environmentally friendly measures the resort takes.

SecurityThis is a very important job at the resort, even though there is not particularly a lot of crime in Bora Bora, it is important for both the resort and the staff and the guests. There would need to be security during both the day time and night time, but there are shifts to take in this job, like the other jobs. During day, security of goods that come to the resort, as well as the guests and other people are important to track. At night, there may be guests as well, but this does not meant that security is only at the entrance, there are also guards that patrol to ensure that people don't trespass on resort property, and keep an eye areas of the resort that may, at times, be under construction may be where the resort is planting more trees.

ManagersThere probably be more variety in the people that work in management, because while it is important to have perspectives that are based on Bora Bora and the culture, there is also the management of how the resort interacts with the environment and the guests, and how it uses resources. The managers will also need to be able understand how to run the resort and to keep up to date with different environmentally friendly practices and processes, as well as what happens in Bora Bora, like politics and things that happen in the local community. Managers will be required to work a lot with the other groups in the resort, much more than with the guests that come, and to communicate with the other groups and discuss things that have been happening and how to move forward with our goals and the resort mission statement. Weekly meetings with the other groups to discuss the next events for the staff to have together to strength teamwork and the bonds amongst the groups and to have fun, as well as to encourage eco-friendly actions after.

LifeguardsThis is obviously an important job, and this is not just for the pool, but also for the lagoon as well. There are shifts, but this is more daytime in the lagoon and daytime and nighttime for the pool; nighttime swimming in the logon is not advised, due to possible harm to swimmers and the ecosystem. Lifeguards will be trained more in first aid than other employees, and they will also have to learn about how the pool works and about the wildlife in the lagoon. The job of lifeguards may be quite similar to the lifestyle of a local Bora Bora person who goes onto the water often, but there will still be certain training that is specific for lifeguarding and using lifeguard equipment.

ReceptionistsThis job requires direct contact and communication with the guests that stay at the resort. This job, though may not be as active as others, requires thorough knowledge of the processes of the resort and know how to use technology well. Receptionists will have more specific training with technology and using technology for their job, and they will also have to have more training with how to communicate and meet the needs of the guests. This also means communication of the resorts processes to the guests when checking in and knowing how to work with the guests and communicate with the other staff members.

CooksThis important position will have to require past knowledge of cooking, whether it be traditional/cultural food or not. Training will be provided for kitchen safety and cooking with what the resort has and how the resort uses the technology to cook. There will be a lot of communication within the kitchen, which is why it is very important that teamwork is strong in this group, and that cooks all communicate with each other during the time that they work. There may be times where the cooks all have a big session together to work on a new menu or when new decisions are being made about how cooking works in the resort, and if changes should be made to change the amount of food should be brought for the different months of the year.

WaitersThis is quite a similar job to the cooks, in the way that waiters do need to communicate very well with each other in order to co-ordinate what they are doing and what the others around them are doing. There will be training for waiter as well, not just with waitering, but also with communicating with the guests and communicating and getting messages back and forth. It might also be that waiters, in addition to learning how to communicate with guests in a way waiters of, also need to learn about the ways that the resort saves water in washing dishes and cleaning. An example might be the way that the resort uses grey water for cleaning bikes, versus the more well filtered water for cleaning dishes. There are many jos to be done by hand as well, which is why it Is important that the staff gets educated in the possibly different ways that the resort operates compared to how a home that is not dedicated to eco-tourism would.

Additional StaffThere are also additional staff members that do a number of different jobs, and may not be entirely dedicated to certain jobs depending on who is busy or not. Additional staff members will also receive the same training as the others, but they will also receive additional training in English and communicating and interacting with the guests that come to the resort. Some of the jobs that additional staff members have are as the concierge, tours booking and help, managing certain equipment for activities, driving the electric buggies, and so on. With most of these jobs involve different activities but all with interacting with guests and other people, additional staff members are very important and should be able to do multiple different tasks and are able to work well with other members of staff in the resort, as well as the local people of Bora Bora.

Motivating the StaffThere are many ways that the resort brings the staff together and motivates the staff to work harder and to see the meaning in their work, in relation to sustainability. There are many ways that the staff can be motivated, and these ways are used by the resort. It is not just all work and no play for the staff; the staff get to use the facilities of the resort in certain times, such as when their is en entire staff bonding time and working on team work. The added freedom after work encourages work to be done at a high level of quality, because the staff will then know what is goo and what is not, and get to see things in the perspective of the guests.

Meaning in the work that the staff does is essential in the quality of their work. If the work seems important and that their is purpose in their job, it is bound to be done better and more efficiently. Looking at it from this perspective, it is then very important when we choose who to employ. It would be better to employ people who are driven to work at an eco-resort because of the resorts gals and mission statement, rather than working for the resort just as a way to earn money. This would then also help the overall atmosphere at the resort and how the staff members feel about one another. This extra step would then be able to contribute to how the resort motivates the staff even further by other principle, which are: rewarding the employees instead of punishing, assigning specific goals to get work done without micromanaging tasks (most of the time), providing a good environment and atmosphere, making the staff feel like a part of something and that what they are doing is worth while, have achievable goals that the staff does achieve, get everyone to contribute and work together, and giving the staff a sense of power so that they can achieve the goals.

An example of rewarding already mentioned above would be splitting the tips everyone makes and giving a little extra, if there is, to the job group that worked extremely hard towards the resorts goals or were able to overcome hurdles. Thee will be a kind of leader in the job group that is either more experienced or does better quality work, but this is not done to show that other staff members are not as good, but it is for other staff members to be able to inquire and talk/discuss with their leaders about things within their job group and how it could expand or change with the managers of the resort. The discussion amongst job groups is important and no ideas will be trashed without giving some thought into it.Many different ideas can come from the different people, and so, ideas and reflections/thoughts of everyone is welcome for future improvement. This is just what all the constant meetings is trying to accomplish, and would help the resort that much.

Also, already mentioned are the many team building events and building strong relation amongst all staff members and the group jobs. This motivates the staff to work more with each other; and the resort encourages this by the dorms and the staff lounges as well. Working together towards the resorts goal is just what motivates staff, and everything that the resort does and how the staff are managed pushes this forward towards the goals and the mission statement. This is an example of how management of the resort is important and how it contributes eco-tourism and how the resort is sustainable. These are all tried and tested ways to motivate staff, and by giving the staff goals once they start working to contribute to their country and eco-tourism, the resort hopes that this just makes the staff even friendlier and harder working for the guests, and for themselves.

Economic Sustainability and ConclusionMany ways that the resort is economically sustainable have actually already been mentioned in the previous section with certain environmental practices of the resort. While Rosa Reed Resort is an eco-resort, a lot of money is put into the resort, and it might be some time until a fair amount of revenue is made, but that is not the main focus of Rosa Reef Resort and Rosa Reef Corporation. Economic sustainability is important, but sustainability is the key word; we need to be able to pay our employees, as that is more important than financial gains for the company itself. Along the same line, environmental and social sustainability is also prioritized above making a profit, as it is known that it is hard to grow economically with eco-resorts, but it is definitely possible to be economically stable.

The word economic sustainability can be looked at in a different way however, and can be looked at in the management of resources other than money. This is very important for the resort to be able to sustain itself, and important resources would be the Bora Bora environment and culture. A big resource would be water, and with the way that the resort functions, it can be said that it is a priority to manage the lagoon waters, and it is taken seriously by the resort to conserve and to not damage as much as it could be with less environmentally friendly processes and technology.

Throughout the resort, there are many solar panels. Initially, this is quite an expensive investment, but later and in the long term, it will be one of the best decisions for the resort because of the way that it is more environmentally friendlier to produce the panels than to constantly use non-renewable energy sources. There will also be a lot of reduced costs because the sun does not have to be paid for, unlike natural gas and fossil fuels. The way that the resort uses coconut oil to use in bio-fuel is basically the same; reducing negative environmental impact and reduces the later costs of having to purchase more ‘dirty’ energy. Basically, reusing vegetable oil for later bio-fuel purposes, using LED lights, solar cooking system, solar air con system, and the way that the pool works all run on the same principles.

On the other hand, there are decisions that the resort does not make due to environmental and economical factors. One that has already been mentioned before would be the sea water air-conditioning system; it would damage the environment too much to install, and the cost is too much for the size and what the resort stands for. Balance in the resort cannot be achieved if the environmental of the social factors have too much input in the decision making process, and neither can economic factors. If it did, then sustainable tourism that is enjoyable for the guests won’t be available, and the goals that the resort sets out for itself won’t all be achieved; and since all the goals derive from the mission statement, not fulfilling them would mean not fulfilling the mission statement to the degree we would like. This may then have consequences on the staff, and the resort would find itself in trouble.

Like many other eco-resorts or eco-lodges that follow through with real sustainability through balancing the 3 sectors (environmental, social, and economical), money is not the priority of these resorts and lodges. It is true that the resort will not make a tremendous amount of money, but it will make enough to sustain itself and for us to earn back the money put into making the eco-resort, and give to the environment and country of Bora Bora.

No matter how much effort is put in, there will always be unexpected variables when trying to do or create anything, and this might happen when trying to construct and run this Rosa Reef Resort. This is exactly why Rosa Reef Resort will go forth with the project to prove and be a role model of real sustainable eco-tourism for other resorts, and to inform others of how there can be luxury and enjoyment in nature, peace, and culture.
