What has Ron Arad offered to the legacy of furniture design?Understanding materials.

Learning how they work under certain constraints.

How to manipulate materials in ways never thought possible.

Pushing the boundaries of what certain materials can do.

Ron Arads work revolves around taboo: the mutual identification of art and design. In Ron Arads work, by contrast, art is identified with products, which in turn coincide with pure aesthetics. His work, therefore, is situated on the increasingly open border between two fields which are now growing more and more fluid, breathing life into each other and creating a new free space for material culture. Design must explore original forms of expression, just as art must transcend the traditional boundaries of self-contained artworks. [Deyan]

After Spring and Before Summer, 1992

Ron Arads approach ultimately finds its raison detre in what Pierre Restany in 1987 termed the neo-primitive condition of contemporary man who, like a survivor from the shipwreck of history, is recycling technologies and improper fragments of the world instead of building a new habitat for himself. What matters is whether an objects is interesting or boring: when you touch or look at it, does it give you a pleasurable feeling or not? It is not necessary to know what it is! [Deyan]

Ron AradSecond quote : The answer of the question asked as to whether he sees himself more as a designer or more as an artist.

This is a mysterious and indefinite object, across between a sculpture and a spatial device. Prices are what make the difference between art and design. [] I measure success through the number of pieces sold, since design is also industry. But if you are an artist, then you measure success through the price your objects reach at auctions(Ron Arad) [Deyan]
