Monday, October 17 – Depart for overnight flight to Rome. Tuesday, October 18 – Arrival in Rome, Italy. Group transfer to your hotel. Balance of day is at leisure. Tonight, join your Tour Director and traveling companions for a welcome dinner at the hotel. (D) Wednesday, October 19 – Basilicas of Rome and Holy Doors This morning enjoy a guided visit to St. John Lateran Basilica and the Holy Stairs that were brought from Jerusalem to Rome around 326 AD by St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great. Then, visit the impressive St. Mary Major Basilica, make a stop at St. Paul Outside the Walls, the reported burial site of St. Paul, and tour the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom). (B) Optional Plenary I of the OL EuroEast IV Conference. Thursday, October 20 – Vatican City This morning will be devoted to visiting the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and the Basilica of St. Peter and its Square. Your guide will point out the most important pieces of artwork and sculpture in the Museum. Then enter the unrivaled Sistine Chapel to see the frescoed ceiling by Michelangelo and his Last Judgment scene painted on the altar wall. Continue into the Basilica to see the inspiring Pieta, the many side chapels, and the Baldacchino by Bernini. Walk through the Papal Crypt to see the tombs of the Popes. Descend the Basilica’s front steps to St. Peter’s Square and walk through the colonnaded piazza. Time will be provided for lunch and shopping in the vicinity of St. Peter’s square. A private audience with Cardinal Kurt Koch may be arranged in the afternoon, before returning to the hotel. (B) Optional Plenary II of the OL EuroEast IV Conference. Friday, October 21 – Possible Papal Audience This day will be reserved for a possible private audience with Pope Francis who met with the pilgrimage group in 2014. Otherwise the day will be available for private excursions and free time. Meet back at the hotel for a festive dinner in Rome. (B, D) Optional Plenary III of the OL EuroEast IV Conference. Saturday, October 22 – Sites of the Roman Empire We will spend the morning celebrating a private Byzantine Catholic Divine Liturgy at the Russian College (Russicum) and visit the Pontifical Oriental Institute.

In the afternoon, we will be traveling to the heart of ancient Rome and the Christian faith to visit the 2,000 year-old Roman Forum. Then we will see the magnificent Arch of Constantine erected in 315 AD to celebrate his victory over co-emperor Maxetius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, after which time he legalized Christianity throughout the Roman world. We will walk across the road to the Colosseum where gladiators fought to the death and Christians were fed to the lions. We will also visit the immense Pantheon. Remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. (B) Sunday, October 23 – Liturgy and Mass; Rome to Istanbul Attend the church of your choice – Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox or Eastern Catholic. This afternoon, transfer to the airport for your flight to Istanbul. You will be met by your Turkish tour guide who will give you a brief orientation to the charms of the city and then take you to your hotel. You can catch the first glimpse of this fascinating city where the continents meet each other. (B) Monday, October 24 – Religious Sites of Istanbul This morning, we will begin our visit to Constantinople (Istanbul) with an Orthodox Divine Liturgy at the Baloukli Monastery where recent patriarchs are buried and a spring of healing water is located. After free time for lunch, we will visit the Topkapi Palace and Harem Section, and then the Church of Christ the Savior in Chora. It was repaired in the Period of Commenses and Palaiologuses, and is considered to be the most important Byzantine Monument in Istanbul after Hagia Sofia. While unremarkable in its architecture, the interior walls of the church are decorated with impressive fourteenth century mosaics, which portray scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary. We will conclude with a visit to the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. (B) Optional Plenary IV of the EuroEast IV Conference. Tuesday, October 25 – Byzantine Empire Heritage Today, we will begin our tour with an extended visit to the jewel of Byzantine architecture, the Great Church of Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) built by the Emperor Justinian. After free time for lunch, we will then visit the Blue Mosque, and also learn about the importance of the Hippodrome and the Cisterns during the Byzantine Empire. We will conclude the day with a visit to the Grand Bazaar with its tiny shops, and the “Misir Carsisi” - the Spice Market. (B) Optional Plenary V of the EuroEast IV Conference. Wednesday, October 26 – All-day Charter Boat Cruise This morning, we will board a charter boat at a wharf near our hotel and take an unforgettable cruise on the Bosphorus with views of old Turkish wooden houses and beautiful scenery. The Bosphorus is a long strait which joins the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea in Istanbul and actually separates the continents of Europe and Asia. On the cruise you will also see the elegant Dolmabahce Palace and cruise under the Bosphorus Bridge. We will enjoy lunch on the cruise. In the afternoon, we will then cruise to one of the Prince’s Islands in the Sea of Marmara known as Heybeliada, or Halki in Greek. There we will take horse drawn “taxis” to the top of the island and visit the Greek Orthodox Monastery and Seminary, have Plenary Session VI of the EuroEast conference, and dinner at a restaurant on the wharf. We will then return to our hotel by boat. (B, L, D)

Thursday, October 27 – Ecumenical Patriarchate Today we will have free time in the morning, and then after lunch travel along the banks of the Golden Horn to the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate where you will visit the Cathedral of St. George, tour the Patriarchate’s offices, and attend Vespers. If possible, we might have a private audience with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Tonight enjoy a farewell dinner at the Hamdu Restaurant which has splendid views of Galata Tower and Golden Horn as we celebrate the conclusion of our faith-filled journey. (B. D)

Friday, October 28 – Istanbul – Depart for Home Your basic pilgrimage package ends after breakfast this morning. A group transfer will be provided to the airport for your homebound flights. (B) For those who sign up for the additional weekend excursion, you will be transferred to the Domestic Terminal of Istanbul Ataturk Airport for your flight to Cappadocia. Cappadocia will thrill you with its unique landscapes formed by erosions of winds and water. Today’s inactive volcanoes of Erciyes and Hasan used to be active thousands of years ago and erupted continuously covering the region with a blanket of tuff that gets eroded so easily due to its soft character. Cappadocia has been occupied by various civilizations including Hittites, Greeks, Romans and Turks living in rock dwellings for centuries. Dinner will be served at the hotel. (D) Saturday, October 29 – Sights of Cappadocia For the ambitious, and optional balloon ride will be offered from 5:30 am to 8:30 am. After breakfast, your expedition will start with the Monastic Centre of Goreme, founded by St. Basil as the first Monastic Centre of Christianity during the 4th century. This morning you will have an extensive tour of the Monastic Centre that functions as an open-air museum, having very well preserved rock-hewn churches decorated with Byzantine frescoes. Then, you will enjoy walking through the valleys of Zelve that was a town composed of hundreds of rock-carved houses occupied until 1942. After touring other sites as time allows, we will return to the hotel for dinner. (B, D) Sunday, October 30 – Divine Liturgy and Return to Istanbul Today, we have a reservation at Dereyamanli Church in Avanos, Cappadocia for an Orthodox Divine Liturgy. Driving through the inspiring valleys and towns of Cappadocia that will embrace you with their beauty, you will reach Sinassos to visit its well preserved houses and rock-carved Byzantine churches. We will return to the airport for a mid-afternoon flight to Istanbul and dinner at our hotel near the airport. (B, D) Monday, October 31 – Istanbul – Depart for Home After breakfast in the hotel, a group transfer will be provided to the airport for your homebound flights. (B)
