Probably one of the biggest bones of contention for 21st Century Catholics or at least those who want their children to be baptized, is finding suitable and eligible Godparents, or what the Church officially calls “Sponsors.”

First, let me begin by saying that the only legal requirement for a child to be baptized according to Canon Law is that: “There must be a founded hope that the infant be brought up in the Catholic religion” (Canon 868:2). Therefore, I have no problem baptizing children of Protestants, Jews, straight, gay or even single parents. That they bring their child to the church requesting Baptism, is almost enough of that “founded hope” which is required.

Believe it or not, being a Godparent (Sponsor) is actually more difficult to be eligible. Again, according to Canon Law, a Sponsor must be: 1. At least 16 years of age. 2. Celebrated the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. 3. Able and willing to enthusiastically profess his/her faith during the Rite of Baptism, ready to model a Catholic Christian lifestyle (weekly Eucharist). 4. One or two in number (one a man and one a woman) and 5. Not bound by any canonical penalty (imposed or declared).

Therefore, if you think your best friend, your cousin, an aunt, someone you take spinning classes with or the babysitter is a kind person to you and your children and they are Jewish or Muslim, it does not work. Because choosing the proper Godparent is not so much about how good a person they are or how much money they have or even if they are close to your family; what is most important is THEIR practiced Catholic faith.

Now, this does NOT mean that they were Baptized, Confirmed and received their First Holy Communion and have not been back to church since. It does not mean that they attended Saint Joseph School up until the 8th Grade.

But again, MOST importantly, it is about how they are living their Catholic faith today. It is not about being “spiritual” or “religious” by saying prayers at home and being a good person, but again, it is MORE about living a Catholic life of which the essence is coming to church weekly and not weakly!

Why all this fuss about finding someone to fulfill these difficult requirements (which at times is almost impossible, and I know). It is because of what this Sacrament truly means. Baptism is the gateway; it is the doorway to the other Sacraments and necessary for salvation by actual reception if not by desire (Canon 849).

In today’s First Reading, the Prophet Isaiah reminds us that God has “Grasped us by the hand” that He formed us and set us as a covenant of the people. This covenant, this relationship that God offers us is not just about being nice, kind, generous or lighting candles to Buddha in our bedroom. It is about a personal relationship that God offers each and every one of us without any “partiality.”

So, my real question for today’s Solemnity, is why was Jesus baptized to begin with? If Baptism is for the removal of original sin and Jesus was without sin, then why was He baptized?

First, the Baptism of Jesus by His cousin John, was not the same Baptism that our parents had us participate in as children. Saint John even explains that in the Gospel:

“I have baptized you with water; (Jesus) will baptize you with the Holy Spirit” (Mark 1:8).

The Sacrament of Baptism comes from Jesus Himself, who at the end of His life here on earth commissions His Apostles to go to the ends of the earth: “Making disciples of all nations, Baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). That same Aramaic formula (now translated into every language) has been used for over 2,000 years at each Baptism.

By this formula, by the descending of the Holy Spirit, not only has the stain of original sin been removed, but it also signifies that the child (or adult) now has become part of God’s family of faith, part of His covenantal relationship, part of the Catholic Church. So how can anyone stand up for their faith when they either don’t practice or believe in it? Hence, the reason why it is not easy to be a Godparent.

Many times, the common complaint against the Catholic Church (and we as priests) is that we have too many rules. Well, I can tell you that we have so many rules because it is important to us and our faith. If it were just willy-nilly or something that is not really important, then it should be easy. By the action of pouring water over people’s heads (or even submerging them in the water) Baptism is made very special, very important and even holy by Jesus Himself. That is why it is one of the seven Sacraments (“An outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace” thank you Baltimore Catechism).

For us who have been baptized already, what does this Solemnity mean for us? The key is found in today’s Second Reading from Acts: “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good (works)” (Acts 10:38). Therefore, the baton has been passed to us. We, like Christ, must excel as well. Now is the acceptable moment for each of us to become and make a difference in someone else's life. Human problems and hurts surround us everywhere. By our Baptismal graces, we too, like Jesus, must go about doing good works.

When I think that I cannot make a difference in someone’s life, I remember the following words that I found on a poster designed to motivate salespeople working for money. But they could have just as easily written for those of us Baptized in Christ’s Name:

A winner is always part of the answer. A loser always part of the problem.

A winner always has a program. A loser always has an excuse.

A winner says, “Let me do it for you.” A loser shouts, “That's not my job.”

A winner sees an answer for every problem. A loser has a problem for every answer.

A winner says, “It may be difficult, but it's possible.” A loser says, “It may be possible, but it's too difficult.”

Baptism removes Original Sin. Baptism is an initiation into the people of God. Baptism is a call to discipleship; and Baptism is a commissioning to “Do good works.”

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of our Trustee and dear friend George Hayek. George was truly a wonderful man with a great love for his parish family here in Newton. He and Agnes were regular church

goers and always made sure that whatever the church needed, he was there to help. In the past, George donated the beautiful Baptismal Icon of our Lord which proudly is displayed above our Baptismal font. It will serve as a constant reminder of George’s generosity and dedication to his church. May the Lord give George’s wife Agnes and their family His peace.

Simon Cancer Center and The Thomas Glasser Caregivers Center at Overlook Medical Center are sponsoring a bereavement support group for those who have experienced a recent death of a spouse or partner within the last year. The purpose of this group is to provide a safe environment where one can share feelings and experiences and explore ways of coping with the death. The group is led by professionals trained in grief related issues and is held weekly for six weeks in a welcoming environment.
