third Sunday of Advent

Readings

Isiah 35:1-6, 10 James 5:7-10 Matthew 11:2-11

Gospel

When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.”

As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out to the desert to see? A

reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you. Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

1. What do we expect to happen this Advent, and what do we want to see?

2. How did you come to know Christ? Was your heart filled with JOY, and is it still filled with that joyful feeling?

3. Christ responded to John the Baptist by proclaiming the healing of the sick and the raising of the dead. How has Christ responded to you? How did you respond back?

4. Do you fully recognize Christ in your life, and if so where and when?

It is called the "Shepherds’ Candle." To the shepherd’s great joy, the angels announced that Jesus came for humble, unimportant people like them, too. In liturgy, the color rose signifies joy.

After all that God has given us,

how can anyone refuse gifts like these?

During this Advent season

please pray that all life is treated with dignity

from birth until natural death.

Join us in the church on

Sunday, December 22 at 11:30 AM to pray the

Rosary for Life.

This week a parishioner called to recognize the gift that the Love They Neighbor Ministry does for the St. Mark community. She said, “[Those in] the ministry...help a lot by taking us to doctor appointments and helping whenever there’s a problem… especially...since we no longer can drive. They deserve recognition for all the good they do for us.”

So to those who volunteer—your gift of time is deeply appreciated by those you touch. You make a difference in the lives of others. To those interested—if you have time to help with this ministry, complete the form below and you’ll be rewarded with the joy you receive by extending Christ’s Hands to those in need.

You may receive the Host either on the tongue or in the hand. Making a gesture of reverence is appropriate when approaching the minister; you may wish to bow or to make the Sign of the Cross. Consume the Host while standing before the minister. Do not walk away from the minister with the Host in your hand. For larger celebrations, when you see additional ministers distributing Communion at the front, be willing to move to the alternate ministers, as well as those standing in the very center aisle, so as to allow Communion to be distributed in a reasonable period of time. Those who are unable to walk long distances unassisted are invited to sit in the front pew so that a minister may bring Communion to you. If you suffer from Celiac disease, and are unable to receive the regular wheat Host, please alert the Altar Server and then sit in a row that is reserved for those who are gluten-sensitive.

Many St. Mark parishioners are part-time residents; are you one? If you’d like to join our parish family, maybe it’s time to register.

Did you know that you can maintain your status in your current parish when you become a member of St. Mark?

Registering assures that, should a priest be needed, all necessary information is on file. Since only registered parishioners may use the Social Hall, your registration will assure you have a place for your family to gather if funeral plans are needed.

Registration forms are in the narthex, at the parish office, or on our website, www.stmarkrcc.com.

We look forward to officially welcoming you

to our church family!

On Receiving Holy Communion

There is more to the mystery of the Blessed Eucharist than the human mind can grasp. This examination is not meant to be a burden to consciences, but an opportunity to reflect gratefully from time to time on various aspects of the gift of the Eucharist.

While processing to Communion, do I realize that I am journeying toward the “Jerusalem above” to feast with angels and saints, with deceased friends and loved ones, with the entire mystical Body of Christ?

Do I recognize those around me as the Body of Christ, and add my voice, however halting, to the processional song that expresses our “union in spirit” and “joy of heart”?

Do I bow humbly to the Eucharistic Lord, to the servant of the Lord ministering to me, to the altar on which the Lord’s dying and rising is made present?

Does my veneration of the Risen Lord, really present in sacramental sign, open my eyes to the “divine presence” which “we believe is everywhere”?

As I eat the “Bread of Life,” do I realize that my own body is a “temple of the Holy Spirit”?

As I drink the “Precious Blood,” do I realize that Christ’s love poured out for me in sacrifice calls me to pour out my life for others?

Does this sacred banquet strengthen my yearning for a world in which the poor have enough to eat?

Am I grateful that the Eucharist has the “salutary virtue” to “remit the sins I commit daily”?

Do I let the Eucharistic Lord still my inner voices ready to speak in judgment of others’ piety and prayer?

Am I ready to “go forth in peace, glorifying the Lord by my life”?

Peace Hope Love As we eagerly anticipate the coming of the Christ

Child, love and generosity are very real at St. Mark the Evangelist. Your generous gifts – given from your hearts – are nothing short of compassion in action!

Your contributions enabled the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to provide Thanksgiving meals and beautiful Christmas gifts that children will open on Christmas morning, as well as providing other assistance to those in need throughout the year.

We are so very blessed with your works of Mercy, and be assured you will be remembered in our prayers at Christmas time and into the New Year. We recall Matthew’s Gospel when Jesus told his disciples, “…..whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

A BLESSED CHRISTMAS TO

YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES!

The next collection will take place on December 22.

Is Small Christian Community (SCC) for you? SCC is a group of parishioners who meet weekly to:

• reflect on the scriptures, • share insights into the Word of God and

bear witness to God’s presence in our lives, • evangelize our FAITH.

At St. Mark the Evangelist, there are currently ten such groups comprised of anywhere from six to fifteen men and/or women. Some of the groups are all women, some all men. and some mixed.

If you would like to participate in a Small Christian Community, contact Antoinette or Ken Kelly at 352/259-8672.

Did you Know?

Your weekly bulletin is printed at ZERO cost to the parish. This is due entirely to the number of advertisers we are so fortunate to have sponsoring our St. Mark bulletin. When you are looking for goods or services, please look toward our bulletin advertisers first. Then, if you do patronize any of them, take a moment to thank them for advertising at St. Mark. Just a word or two of acknowledgement will bring those advertisers back again and save the parish $$$.
