The Pastor’s Page July 17, 2005 CONFUSED ENOUGH?

There certainly appears to be a general amount of confusion about the possibility of ordination for Mark Kurowski, the former Methodist minister who converted to Catholicism and who has been approved by Rome to study for the priesthood. If the major seminary endorses his petition, Mark could be ordained in three years. Some of our parishioners have done a considerable amount of head-scratching about this prospect. The question has been posed, “How can a married man be ordained?” Another question is, “When do you think priests will be allowed to marry?” Let me attempt some answers. First, “How can a married man be ordained?” Well, let us stop and think about that a second. We are most certainly used to that already, just not in terms of priesthood. After all, the vast majority of men ordained to the diaconate are married. There is provision in the Church for married men to be ordained. “But, doesn’t marriage prevent a man from being ordained a priest?” No, it does not. You see, marriage is not an impediment to ordination. Just because someone is married does not mean that they cannot be ordained a priest. While it is the discipline of the Roman Catholic Church that baptized, practicing Catholics cannot be married if they wish to be ordained, the Church allows the converts to the faith who are married to be ordained to the priesthood. The decision for a married man to be ordained to the priesthood is done on a case by case basis. Generally speaking, the married men who are ordained to the priesthood were ministers in the former faith in which they were practicing. And if that faith were close enough to the Roman Catholic Church, the man could be given permission to study the Catholic faith intensely with eyes set on ordination. However, once ordained, the married priest — as indeed is the case with our married deacons — would not be able to remarry should his wife pass away before him. And that answers the second question posed above: “When will priests be able to marry?” Once ordained, ordination becomes an impediment to marriage. So a presently ordained priest would not be allowed to marry since, when we were ordained, we made a promise of celibacy. Short answer to a long question? Marriage is not necessarily an impediment to ordination. Ordination, however, is an impediment to marriage. That is why priests cannot marry and that is why married priests, as few as they are (and deacons as well), cannot remarry should their spouse pass away before them. I will continue to attempt to clarify these issues as they arise and I am grateful for your patience!

Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for a number of years now. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: July 18: Rev. Eugeniusz Pogorzelski (2002) July 21: Rev. John Dillon (1961) July 23: Rev. John J. Frawley (1990)

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A priest was extremely nervous about his first funeral service as a Navy chaplain, but the undertaker assured him that he would prompt him. All went well until, at the close, the undertaker whispered to him to instruct the family to come up and view the body. "Will the family now come forward and pass around the bier," said the nervous chaplain. He cringed inwardly when he heard his own words. Later, as he was leaving, he overheard two of the cemetery workers talking. "I didn't get any beer," one said. "Did you?" "You heard the chaplain," the other replied. "It was just for the family."

ROAD TRIP TO HEAVEN — WE NEEDED A BUS! Good thing we were not actually driving somewhere on our “road trip” last Sunday, July 11th. As we planned the afternoon, we were hopeful that a good number of people would turn out for the couple of hours discussing prayer. Well, if we would have been on a road trip, we would not have made it in a couple of cars — we would have needed a bus or two. There were 70 adults and 10 children in attendance. Many thanks to the Stewardship Commission as well as to all our other volunteers who worked to plan the day and who came to participate in the day. Thanks, also, to those of you who came out to see what we had to offer. The general response from those in attendance was that the idea and program were good and that they would want to see other opportunities similar to last Sunday’s offered to the parish family from time to time. We will be taking our reports back to the Stewardship Commission as well as to the Pastoral Council. From there we will look ahead to what we might be able to offer. By the way, looking WAY ahead, mark March 26-29, 2006 down in your calendars for our Parish Mission.

ROADTRIP TO HEAVEN

St. Thomas More Parish

Year of Prayer

What a nice weekend adventure we had last Sunday. Our summer stewardship project started at 2:00 with Father Mike providing some prayer insights, then three breakout sessions (high school/college, families with children at home, other adults). Then back to church for more wisdom from Father Mike, another round of break out sessions and then concluding remarks by Father Mike at 4:00 p.m. a.. Along the way, refreshments were served. b.. There was also the opportunity to purchase various prayer guides. c.. Those present voted to hold another similar event, again focusing on the various ways to pray. d.. Everyone left with a prayer gift as a memento of our Road Trip to Heaven. Thanks to everyone involved -- the Stewardship Committee, the discussion leaders, Father Mike, and to the men, women, students, and children who attended.

Let's do it again!

AN OVERVIEW OF THE TRAIL TO BECOME AN EAGLE SCOUT Of any one hundred boys who become Scouts, thirty will drop out in their first year. Perhaps this may be regarded as a failure, but in later life all of these will speak well of the program. Of the one hundred, only rarely will one ever appear before a juvenile court judge. Twelve of the one hundred will be from families that are not affiliated with a Church. Through Scouting, these twelve — and many of their families — will be brought into contact with a Church and will continue to be active members all of their lives. Six of the one hundred will become pastors. Each of the one hundred will learn something from Scouting. Almost all will develop hobbies that will add interest throughout the rest of their lives. Approximately one-half will serve in the military and, in varying degrees, profit from their Scout training. At least one will use his training to save another person’s life and many will credit it with saving their own lives.

Two of the one hundred will reach Eagle rank and at least one will later say that he valued his Eagle above his college degree. Many will find their future vocation through merit badge work and Scouting contacts. Seventeen of the one hundred boys will later become Scout leaders and will give leadership to thousands of additional boys. Only one in four boys in America will become Scouts, but it is interesting to know that, of the leaders in this nation in business, religion and politics, three out of four were Scouts. The trail to Eagle leads a candidate through seven ranks: Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and, finally, Eagle. The 1938 Handbook for Scoutmasters defines an Eagle Scout as follows: “He is a young man who is qualified to help others as well as take care of himself. His badge is not a decoration, but rather a symbol of knowledge and ability.” St. Thomas More’s Boy Scout Troop 542 is truly blessed to have a large percentage of its scouts attain the rank of Eagle. To date, those who have become Eagle Scouts are: Congratulations to all of those who worked hard and attained the rank of Eagle. Many thanks to all who give of their time and talent to help shape the lives of our young men in scouting. The dedication and selflessness of the scout leaders are good examples and inspiration to all involved.

The Scout Law: On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
