description

Last year saw the revival of a tradition that had all but disappeared from Roger Bacon. A young friar, Bro. Roger Lopez, came here to spend his year of supervised ministry. This year comes before final vows, which Bro. Roger made on August 25th of this year. Many of you will remember young friar priests and brothers (and Franciscan Sisters) for whom Roger Bacon or OLA was a first assignment. Bro. Roger returned to Chicago to finish his studies for the priesthood. Everyone here at school hopes that he’ll make his way back to Roger Bacon after he is ordained, bringing his enthusiasm and many personal gifts to our students. I can only hope that other young friars will also become part of the Franciscan tradition here at Roger Bacon. Fr. Bill Farris, OFM President

Last year saw the revival of a tradition that had all but disappeared from Roger Bacon. A young friar, Bro. Roger Lopez, came here to spend his year of supervised ministry. is year comes before nal vows, which Bro. Roger made on August 25th of this year. Many of you will remember young friar priests and brothers (and Franciscan Sisters) for whom Roger Bacon or OLA was a rst assignment.

Bro. Roger’s presence with us brought the number of friars working at Roger Bacon up to ve, the most religious involved at a Catholic high school in Cincinnati! I personally nd much fulllment as a friar in high school ministry. e Franciscan leadership constantly promotes Roger Bacon as one of the sponsored ministries of the Province, and has been justiably proud of the work done here for the past 84 years.

Our lay faculty and sta are also invited into our Franciscan heritage and traditions as well. Every year, two or three faculty or sta members are selected to participate in a Rome/Assisi pilgrimage, a vivid experience of the life and spirituality of St. Francis and St. Clare.

Bro. Roger returned to Chicago to nish his studies for the priesthood. Everyone here at school hopes that he’ll make his way back to Roger Bacon aer he is ordained, bringing his enthusiasm and many personal gis to our students. I can only hope that other young friars will also become part of the Franciscan tradition here at Roger Bacon.

Spread the word, Roger Bacon is introducing two exciting new programs, the Assisi Scholars Program and the Legacy Program.

The Assisi Scholars Program is the most unique and selective program in the city for high achieving students. Students will need to go through a two-tier admission process to become an Assisi Scholar. First, incoming ninth grade students will have to apply to be a part of the Roger Bacon Honors Program by submitting an application, grades, recommendations and sitting for an interview. After successful completion of the freshmen honors program, students may apply for the next more challenging step in their journey–The Assisi Scholars Program.

Scholars will continue their rigorous academic curriculum, along with special events and workshops, including:• SAT/ACT Workshops • Professional Mentoring• Quarterly Lecture Series • Special Capstone Project

At the culmination of their program, scholars will be sent on a pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy! This opportunity is unique to Roger Bacon and our Franciscan heritage, allowing students to travel the world and walk in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Clare.

The Legacy Program is a great way to introduce Future Spartans to Roger Bacon High School and grow our great tradition. Any Roger Bacon graduate can register their child, grandchild, niece or nephew as a legacy student. Once registered, students will receive special invitations to events, birthday cards and become eligible for a Legacy Scholarship once they reach high school.

To register a student, the alumnus must be an active donor and call Sue Huerkamp in the Alumni Office or Brandon Cowans in the Office of Admissions.

TRADITON. e new name of our alumni magazine is so appropriate for Roger Bacon. Tradition evokes memories of past experiences at both Our Lady of Angels and Roger Bacon high schools. It reinforces the formation and integration of these traditions in the lives of current students. Finally, it reminds us of our responsibilities to future generations of Spartans and the importance that traditions will have to them.

TRADITION. Traditions are what make Roger Bacon and Our Lady of Angels so special and set us apart from other schools, both public and private. From social to academic to athletic to traditions that are there just because they are (i.e., students cannot walk on the marble front stairs at Roger Bacon until they graduate or on the OLA emblem in the main entrance of the old high school), traditions are the very fabric of the experiences we remember and cherish.

Undoubtedly, it is also a Catholic tradition that schools appeal to alumni for support. Any parent who has raised a son or daughter in Catholic education fully appreciates that statement. ere are always needs and always requests to help with those needs. We ask for your continued generous nancial support, but just as importantly, we ask for your involvement and prayers. Roger Bacon has a tradition of producing outstanding

and productive leaders and your participation in our school, regardless the form, is imperative to the success of our current and future students. As graduates of Roger Bacon and Our Lady of Angels, you serve as shining examples to our young men and women and are the embodiment of a bright future they are diligently working towards. Your involvement in the formation of their traditions will always be remembered and appreciated.

TRADITION. As we move condently into a future full of promises and challenges, we ask that you be a personication of a very important tradition – service to others. We pray that you will nd a way to make a meaningful contribution to the students, present and future, who will ll your ranks as alumni.

We look forward to the start of a promising and fullling new school year in August. God bless you and God bless Roger Bacon.

On Wednesday, April 4th, the entire faculty and staff descended upon various sites in the City of St. Bernard in order to GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. The day began by joining the students from St. Clement Grade School for Mass. Parks were beautified, teachers at St. Clement appreciated the volunteer classroom aides for their grade school students, and the St. Clement

Friary kitchen and the Tau House for the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor received a major spring cleaning as well. “Since we require community service hours for our students, we thought that it would be important to be a role model for them,” said Dan Nolan, Director of Community Outreach. The day concluded with a catered lunch in the school cafeteria.

Students from St. Francis Seraph School, RB and Seton High Schools joined together as part of leadership Scholars Project Month to create a RECYCLING DAY AT ST. FRANCIS SERAPH. Students were asked to identify an issue in their school and work to change it. Two seventh-graders at St. Francis Seraph wanted to increase awareness about recycling in the historic Over the Rhine neighborhood. Led by RB juniors Kenny Gohs and Tamara Jones with two other Seton students, the team collected recyclable materials during a lunch period to educate the younger students about the importance of recycling and what materials could be recycled. In April the high school students presented the results of their project during a workshop at Xavier University.

NEUROSPINAL SURGERY PERFORMED AT ROGER BACON. Christ Hospital provided Roger Bacon High School with an opportunity to view live surgery on Tuesday, April 17th (pictured right). Several students interested in the health field with an expressed interest in viewing this surgery, were invited to attend 2 hour sessions of neurospinal surgery in the library. Students were connected live via the internet to ask real-time questions of the surgeons and the surgery team as they viewed the operation.

On Thursday, April 12 thirty-one men and women from the community came to Roger Bacon for CAREER DAY (pictured below). With career fields ranging from Veterinary Science to Social Media Specialists the students were informed on all different types of careers. This is the 12th year Roger Bacon has hosted a Career Day which presents an opportunity for students to learn and think about what they can aspire to be. Many thanks to all who volunteered their time and experience for the benefit of our students.

Teacher Bill Stone (pictured below) kept busy all summer outdoors with his new venture, PIZZA BOMBA. The gourmet pizza “wagon” made appearances at the Taste of Cincinnati, Fountain Square and the Reds games this summer.

Much Ado About Something

Inspired by reading Shakespeare’s Mac-beth, the Advanced Placement English Language and Compo-sition class began construction on a Shakespearian garden in May. e students’ reading and research project revealed dozens

of botanicals that appear in Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets. Positioned in a prominent and

sunny location in the front of Roger Bacon, the garden now boasts an array of roses, iris, mari-

golds, lilies, and culinary herbs. e elegant plantings of yellow, white, and purple, complement

the school’s imposing Norman architecture.

is October, the Shakespearian garden will be dedicated to the late Father Paschal Varnskuhler,

OFM a former teacher at Roger Bacon who was an avid lover of literature and art. Advanced Placement and Honors students, from the newly formed Shake-spearian Garden Club, planted and will maintain the garden in the future. According to Kevin Anneken, “e new garden will brighten our campus and honor an individual who is dear to the Roger Bacon community. “

The Arts... More than Fine! The Fine Arts Department hosted the Fine Arts Festival on

Saturday May 5th, 2012, in Roger Bacon’s auditorium. Artwork from the

students was displayed beautifully for viewing while being accompanied

by music from the RB Jazz Combo.

The ACADEMIC AWARDS CEREMONY was held this year on Tuesday, May 8th on campus. Respect Life’s Senior Prom

This short phrase was one of the first of many lessons that Ana, our guide, explained to us in Costa Rica this past June. It’s not just a cool, hip, local bit of lingo, but it’s a summative phrase for the whole Costa Rican way of life, one that five of us: juniors José Arreaga, Claire Devlin, and Francesca Lipari, and teachers Mike Benjamin and I embraced fully for one glorious week. It summarizes all of the lessons we learned about science, ecology, and ethical living that we plan to bring back as we hope to plant small seeds of change for the future here as well.

Had St. Francis and St. Clare visited Costa Rica, they, too, would have said, ¡Pura Vida! The Costa Ricans treat the earth with reverence, recycling everything possible. At the community center in Yue, part of our first day of community service, some of us stuffed newspaper and empty snack bags into used soda bottles. These would become the “bricks” for a wall later. We left our dirty clothes and shoes behind as there were people in San Jose who would thoroughly clean them and hand them out to those who needed them. Don Juan, who runs a thriving organic farm, taught us about composting. Nothing is wasted!

Probably one of the best ways to explain the impact this week had on the five of us is to reiterate what my students have heard from me for years: everything in life is connected. The more I learn, the more I see the connections in life and hope my students see also. This classroom lesson became hands-on obvious as we walked the beach-side jungle. Friar Laurence’s lines from Romeo and Juliet ran loop-like through my head as we walked along: “For naught so vile that on the earth doth live/But to the earth some special good doth give.”

Tino, our jungle guide, gave us many examples of the dual existence of the nature surrounding us. Some of us allowed the golden orb spider to climb our arms as Tino explained how scientists are trying to use its web as suturing thread in surgery because of its strength and delicacy. We learned that eating live termites can help us survive in the jungle (and yes, all of us ate them!). We experienced the noni fruit, a jellyfish-looking white fruit that smelled and tasted like bad blue cheese, but whose juice has been used to help cancer patients. Earlier that week, I learned to appreciate having geckos wander my room since they ate the copious mosquitoes.

The lessons were exciting and abundant, just as the spirit of the Costa Ricans who opened their arms to embrace us. Carlos, our driver, immediately immersed us in his culture through his music. One of our favorite Reggae songs embodied ¡Pura Vida! “What goes around comes around; the world is a cycle.” Our students’ favorite day was our second day of community service at a school outside

of La Fortuna. We brought them needed school supplies, primed a new schoolhouse, and built a jungle gym working alongside their students. However, as is often the case while doing community service, we received as much as we gave: experiencing the school’s first cultural performance, touring the student garden which provided food for their lunches, and making friends. The world is truly a cycle.

And about those termites...They taste like carrots!¡Pura Vida!

¡Pura Vida!A local Costa Rican adjective slang for pure life, fine, cool, very well, or everything is OK. These two words can be used as a greeting or a farewell or just anywhere in conversation.

On Tuesday, April 24th, RB students danced the night away with the elderly residents from the Archbishop Leibold Home. The “SENIOR PROM” is the last Respect Life event for the school year. Two of the residents, Richard and JoAnn were crowned the King and Queen of the Prom! For some of the residents, this was their first prom since many dropped out of school to help support their families during the Depression. “It’s my favorite event of the year and our students are so attentive to the residents at the nursing home,” said Dan Nolan, Director of Community Outreach.

Five high school students in Cincinnati were winners of the ARCHBISHOP KARL J. ALTER SCHOLARSHIP GRANT AWARDS. In 1964, then Archbishop Karl J. Alter established the Archbishop Alter Scholarship, a four-year grant, to promote African-American Catholic leadership among high school seniors. One of the recipients of the award is RB’s Niara Morrow, the daughter of Jamal and Charlene Morrow. Niara will attend Ohio University and pursue a degree in social work.

Junior Chris Miller was accepted as a T.E.A.M. (Teen Educators and Mentors) teacher’s aide in the Cincinnati Zoo's volunteer program. As a member of T.E.A.M. Chris will be assisting instructors at the Zoo with summer camps for children ranging in age from 4-14 years old. He will help by gathering program supplies for instructors, assisting children with craft projects, games and nature activities, keeping children together on hikes in the Zoo, and acting as a positive role model for the children.

Jim Uhrig ’66 was a Social Studies and English Instructor at RB for 42 years and founded the Advanced Placement Program here. He also implemented the Advanced College Credit Collegium program in conjunction with XU. Additionally, Jim served as the Social Studies Department Chairperson, Assistant Principal and Dean of Academics, Summer School Director and recently facilitated the introduction of the Chinese language as part of curriculum at RB. In 2001 he was the recipient of the Joe Kneip Faculty/Staff Distinguished Service Award. In addition to teaching at RB his experience extended to the college level where he was Adjunct Lecturer in History at Xavier and the College of Mt. St. Joseph. Jim was the recipient of the Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship to travel to China in 2004, Japan in 2005, Saudi Arabia in 2007, Bangladesh in 2007 and Turkey in 2009. He was also the recipient of the Institute of International Education Scholarship to Korea in 2006. “Mr. Uhrig recognized that he was not only a classroom teacher, but an essential member of the RB community. His love for his students led him to enter into their lives in many ways by serving as a mentor, moderator and advisor” said Roger Bosse, former principal of RB. Roger added “As a graduate of RB, Jim had a knack for relating to various generations of grads. As part of a multi-generational RB family, he recognized the importance of maintaining relationships with the most recent grads as well as those who had graduated forty or fifty years ago.”

Known by her colleagues and students as a dedicated teacher, a principled person, and one who could keep everyone laughing, Carol Brinkman will be missed by all as she begins a new stage

in her life—retirement. Carol worked in both public and parochial schools with her most recent and longest service at Roger Bacon High School. A versatile teacher, Carol was a member of the Spanish and English Departments for many years. According to Dr. Deborah Luebbe, “Carol could always be relied on to provide flexible and practical solutions to the educational needs of her students. A supremely organized teacher, Carol taught many freshmen and was a very stable force for 9th grade students who were learning how to negotiate their first year at RB.” An ambas-sador for cultural diversity, Carol incorporated her extensive knowledge of Spanish, Mexican, and Central American cultures in her classroom assignments. In addition to teaching English and

Spanish, Carol’s training in Special Education was very valuable during her time as an intervention specialist. Her knowledgeable, innovative, and compassionate approach coupled with good humor was her trademark. An avid reader, homemaker, grandmother, and friend, Carol will enjoy her free time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Deacon Gregg Rose has taught for 37 years, 27 of them at Roger Bacon. “He has lived a life

dedicated to God, his family, St. Francis and RB. His life revolves around his wife Peggy, his two sons, Alex and Aaron, his relationship with God, his job as Deacon at St. Theresa parish and his role as a teacher at Roger Bacon” says friend and colleague Dan Starkey. “Deacon Rose has always been an advocate for the ‘little guy’ who may have had trouble adjusting to RB, had academic struggles or dealt with personal problems” says Dan. Gregg also served as chair of the religious department and was a rep on the faculty enhancement team. He received the Joe Kneip Faculty/Staff Distinguished Service Award in 2011. 2O12 Cincinnati native Tony Meale has written and published a book entitled The Chosen Ones: The Team That Beat LeBron, a behind-the-scenes account of the 2001-02 Roger Bacon basketball team, which defeated LeBron James and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in the Division II state final. The game, a rematch from the regular season, was played approximately five weeks after James, then a 17-year-old junior, appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the words, “The Chosen One” and became a national obsession.

“Being a GCL guy, Roger Bacon’s win is something that was very personal to me,” said Meale, who attended St. Xavier and graduated high school in 2003, the same year as James. “I knew then how special Bacon’s accomplishment was, but I knew it would be a few years before other people did, too.”

While Meale provides fresh insight and new perspective on James, the heart of the book details the struggles and triumphs that former Roger Bacon players and coaches endured and overcame on and off the court before, during and after that magical season. Included in this account is the story of the life and death of Bill Brewer, who coached at Roger Bacon from 1993 to 2005. Brewer died of a heart attack at the age of 42 in November

2007, just five months after being interviewed for a story that ran in USA Today about beating James for the state championship. “I never got to meet Bill,” Meale said, “but I feel like I’ve known him all my life.”

“The young men on the 2002 state championship team provided one of the most memorable moments in RB history,” Neal said. “Tony has done an excellent job capturing that moment and paying tribute to those men and their incredible accom-plishment. I’m so proud to have been a part of it and thankful that Tony has worked so diligently to tell our story.”The Chosen Ones was launched June 10, less than two weeks before James won his first NBA title and has received local and national attention. It has been featured by MaxPreps and SLAM magazine, among others, and endorsed by the likes of Lance McAlister and ESPN.com’s Brian Wind-horst, who has authored multiple books on James. Cincinnati Enquirer sportswriter John Erardi, meanwhile, described the book as “Hoosiers meets Remember the Titans.”

The book, which is 372 pages, is available at Roger Bacon and via Meale’s personal website, www.thechosenonesthebook.com, where he offers free shipping with the purchase of autographed copies. Meale intends to donate a portion of profit to Roger Bacon.

Alums, friends and family “chilled and grilled” together at the annual summer STEAK FRY in June under the big tent on the RB campus. Every year two alums from the class of ’48, Paul Forney & Lou Knolle, return to campus to master the grills, along with their sons and co-workers. Special thanks to Paul and Lou for continuing this fine grilling tradition and to Joe Corcoran & Liz Wilking from the Athletic Department for coordinating this summer event!

Pat Schulker’s unwavering commitment to Catholic education exemplies the Franciscan ideals with which she was raised and continues to practice. She was educated through college in the Catholic system. Pat and her husband Ken sacriced to send their ve children to St. Bartholomew and Roger Bacon. She began her teaching career at St. Bartholomew Consolidated School and took on the task of teaching language arts, reading, religion and math. She even agreed to teach K-3 physical education when the need arose and served on a special committee to evaluate the language arts program and also an accreditation committee. In 2001 Pat joined the faculty at St. Vincent Ferrer as a 6th, 7th and 8th grade teacher of math, language arts, reading and religion. She implemented a new textbook series, created, produced and directed a math fair. She established Student Council and acted as their advisor. In 2005, Pat was hired by St. eresa Little Flower School to teach reading and math. When St. eresa consolidated in 2008 to form Our Lady of Grace, Pat continued to teach junior high students there where she continues to serve as yearbook advisor and the stock market project coordinator. According to her friend and classmate Kathy Clark ’67 “Pat continues to share her talent, time, energy, expertise and love of Catholic education. She deserves to be recognized for her outstanding accomplishments and involvement in her job that goes way beyond normal require-ments. Because she is willing to work for much less pay, taking on extra jobs and willing to teach with no supplementary pay, the reality of Catho-lic education still exists.”

Tom Merkle was nominated for the Astrolabe Award by his sister-in-law, Liz Wilking ’84. “Tom exhibits Astrolabe characteristics every moment of every day. No one ts the description “Once a Spartan Always a Spartan!” better than Tom. He continues to be a role model for family, putting family rst and has committed his life to being a disciple of God, husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. In all of these areas he goes above and beyond” says Liz. Tom has volunteered at St. Vivians as a football and basketball coach and a mentor for boys and girls for the last 25 years. He chaired the Stewardship Campaign there and was President of the Booster Board. At RB Tom has served as vice chair on the Board of Trustees, President of the Athletic Boosters and co-chair for EFE and the Sports Stag. He also served in various fundraising capacities for the following institu-tions: CISE, United Way, College of Mt. St. Joseph, Boy Scouts of America and XU.

“RB is a better place because Tom Merkle walked these halls; it is even better today because he actively continues his commitment here” said Liz Wilking.

“As I walked the halls of Roger Bacon as a high school student, I never could have guessed that life would take me where I am today. But it was the values that I learned there and at the University of Dayton that planted the seeds for a life of service. I volunteered in Ecuador aer college with a program called Rostro de Cristo. In a poor neighborhood there, I became friends with beautiful people who are much less privileged than I am. I worked with people with HIV, taught English to grade-schoolers, facilitated women’s groups, and sang in the local church choir. rough these relationships, I came to see the world with new eyes. It was during this time in Ecuador that God blindsided me and began to invite me to become a Catholic Sister. at was just about the last thing I wanted to be, but I knew I had to at least engage the question.”

“Upon my return from Ecuador, I moved to Anthony, New Mexico, on the Mexican border, to live with a community of Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati as a volunteer. It was a “safe” way to check out the vocation question. I share in community with them and volunteer at their clinic for children with special needs in Anapra, Mexico. Over the last two years, I have journeyed through a dicult but beautiful discernment process, and I have nally decided that I am called to be a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati. On Sunday, June 24th, I ocially entered the community as an Aliate (also known as postulant) during a ceremony at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in Delhi. Andrea Koverman, a native of Dayton and graduate of Alter, entered with me, so we will be in the process together. I will be on the border for one more year and then move to Cincinnati for novitiate. I am thrilled and grateful that God has led me here and excited for the road ahead.”

“Doc” Singer is a Professor Emeritus of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the Boonsho School of Medicine at Wright State University and has been there since 1990. e Walnut Hills High School Class of ’64 grad has “played” many contemporaneous roles in his lifetime other than physician. He has been a husband to Ruth, father to Matthew ’94, Peter ’96 and Elizabeth ’98 and teacher, editor, author, playwright, lyricist, poet, inventor and photographer of his grandchildren.

As a physician, Jon oversaw the health of his immediate community in St. Bernard as Health Commissioner and expressed his travelling kinship with children through his recurring encounters at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Dayton Children’s Hospital Emergency Departments since 1972 to the present. He taught students and residents in training at two medical schools how to care for ill and injured kids. Named as professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at Wright State University in 1990, he had become one of the rst physicians in the country to ascend to this dual rank. He was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award at WSU for lending his insights from the bedside, from a national and international podium and through his writings. With the assistance of his co-workers he was able to publish an autobiography, two children’s books, and a book of 130 poems with photographs. He created IttyYums, the best dinner party game ever. Jon also wrote the book and lyrics for a Broadway musical that was “ignored” by the producer Rick Steiner. “My ‘unibomber-like’ dislike for contemporary electronic aids is legendary among friends, family and colleagues” says Dr. Singer. “I am prehistoric, rejecting wide screen TV, iPods, cell phones and the computer.”

e Spartan Award is

awarded to a Roger Bacon

graduate from 1985

to the present who has

accomplished signicant

lifetime achievements

since graduation.

e Roger Bacon Award was designed to recognize a non-Roger Bacon graduate who believes and supports the mission of Franciscan education and has given their time, treasures or talent to this institution.
