Christmas Journeys around the WorldChristmas Journeys around the WorldChristmas Journeys around the WorldChristmas Journeys around the World
This unit explores four journeys about the birth and young life of Jesus: the
journey to Bethlehem that Mary and Joseph made before Jesus was born,
journey of the magi, the flight to Egypt, and the family’s return to Nazareth.
Enjoy exploring these journey customs as you prepare your heart to receive
the Christ child.
Los PosadasLos PosadasLos PosadasLos Posadas, a Mexican Jou, a Mexican Jou, a Mexican Jou, a Mexican Journeyrneyrneyrney
Mexico has a celebration called Los Posadas. This is a reenactment of the
journey of Mary and Joseph to find a safe place to stay in Jerusalem and have
their baby. Los Posadas happens during the last 12 days of Advent. Each night
Mary and Joseph go from house to house asking if there is room for them to
stay. Some places say there is “no room,” just like the inn keeper. But finally,
on Christmas Eve, there is one place that welcomes Mary and Joseph to stay.
Turn your home into a reenactment of the Los Posadas journey. Begin by
preparing a small picnic, including snacks and a blanket to sit on. Put the
name of every room in the house on small pieces of paper and place them in a
basket. Draw one room name from a basket. Place the picnic inside the room
listed on the piece of paper you chose. Shut the doors of all the rooms.
Pretend that you are travelers looking for a place to stay. You are tired and
you are anxious about finding a place that will welcome you. Go from room to
room carrying flashlights. At each door knock and together ask, “Is there room
for us to stay here?” Open the door and look inside. If the picnic is inside the
room, you will know that you are welcome to come in and enjoy hospitality.
While you eat the picnic, talk about the importance of always letting Jesus into
our lives. Our hearts and our homes must be open to all who need help and
hospitality, just like Mary and Joseph did.
Prayer.Prayer.Prayer.Prayer.
Jesus, as we celebrate your parents’ journey to the stable, help us to remember
to celebrate all of our life journeys. May we find a place of welcome and share
hospitality with others. Amen.

What is it?What is it?What is it?What is it? ScripScripScripScrip----sure is a fundraising progsure is a fundraising progsure is a fundraising progsure is a fundraising programramramram for our church, which allows the regular shopping we do at a variety of retailers to generate income for the church. How? Participating retailers sell gift certificates or gift cards to our church at a discount. Church members buy the certificates for full face value and redeem them for full face value, and our church keeps the difference as revenue. Everybody wins! The retailers get our business, and our church gets a regular source of revenue that involves nothing other than what we would all be doing anyway – shopping/spending at grocery stores, drugstores, restaurants, gas stations, and many other businesses, including online retailers.
Today is the deadline for end-of-November scrip orders. Orders placed today
will be available for pickup next Sunday, Dec. 1. Order forms are available at
the scrip table, and may be turned in there. Or you may email your order to
[email protected] by the end of today.
This order is typically our largest one of the year, as scrip buyers order cards not
only for gifts, and also for their own holiday shopping usage. A complete listing
of all participating retailers is available at the scrip table. Surely, you will be
shopping somewhere that scrip could be used!
We also have a variety of cards in inventory available for immediate purchase
this morning, including (but not limited to) Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath
& Beyond, Dunkin Donuts, Exxon/Mobil, Kohl's, McDonalds, On the Border,
Panera, Starbucks, Subway, Sunoco, Target, and Walmart. In addition, we
always carry cards for Big Y, CVS, Stop & Shop, Trader Joe's, West Side

My Words Can’t Carry All the Praise
Glorious God, how curious and what a confession that we should set aside one day a year and call it Thanksgiving. I smile at the presumption, and hope you smile too. But the truth is, Holy Friend, that my words can’t carry all the praise I want them to, or that they should, no matter how many trips they make. O Glorious One, for this curious day, for the impulses that have designated it, for the gifts that grace it, for the gladness that accompanies it, for my life, for those through whom I came to be, for friends through whom I hear and see greater worlds than I otherwise would, for all the doors of words and music and worship through which I pass to larger worlds, I pause to praise and thank you, with this one more trip of words, which leaves too much uncarried, but not unfelt, unlived, or unloved. Thank you!

Because we believe that all people are created in God’s image and thus are
blessed and loved equally by God, and because love is a unifying and
strengthening force within our Christian Faith,
We, the members of the Rocky Hill Congregational Church, United Church of
Christ, hereby declare ourselves an Open and Affirming Christian community,
actively expressing Jesus’ inclusive embrace of all people.
We welcome all who seek to follow Jesus, including persons of every age,
gender, race, national origin, faith background, marital status and family
structure, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, mental and physical
ability, economic and social status, and educational background, to share in the
life, leadership, ministry, fellowship, worship, sacraments, responsibilities,
blessings and joys of our church family.
Jesus teaches us to welcome all God’s children into God’s covenantal
community. As we grow together in faith and love, we will strive to celebrate the
diversity in which God has created us. Approved by congregational vote June 2009
