    Welcome

Welcome to Rocky City Amateur Swimming Club for its 15th Season.

This season the committee is concentrating on developing our team’s success, our team spirit

    and our teamwork.

Club Mission To provide a structured, positive and disciplined environment where the swimmers are given the best

opportunity to achieve their goals. The senior squad provides a pathway for younger squad members to

progress to State and National Championships.

    Goals: The Club’s goals are:

    - To promote swimming

    - To provide an arena for competition

    - To identity and develop talent

    - To nurture swimmers to develop to their full potential

    - To instil sportsmanship and club spirit and promote team work

    - To assist in the development of technical officials

    - To help deliver cost-effective swimming to swimmers and their families.

    -

Our team of coaches have a program ready for our swimmers, our teams of junior, intermediate, senior and

master’s swimmers have already begun their hard training and competing and our volunteers on the

committee have been working hard getting our registrations, databases and communications into shape to

support our swimmers for another busy season.

Rocky City ASC competes as a member of Central Queensland Swimming Association, Swimming

Queensland and Swimming Australia. All members of Rocky City Swimming, our Coaches, and all officials at

swim meets are registered as members of Swimming Queensland. Annual membership is from 1 July to 30

    June each year.

The Club provides its members with the opportunity to compete at levels that are within their ability with

meets available ranging from regular club nights, local carnivals during the competition season, and for

those swimmers who qualify, Regional, State, National and International level Championships. We strive to

provide a positive atmosphere in which to learn and develop the skills of competitive swimming. Rocky City

supports and welcomes swimmers with disability and provides equitable access to swimming development

    opportunities.

The Club provides swimmers with the opportunity to improve, strive to excel, enjoy the sport of swimming

and pursue their goals and dreams. Our swimmers are grouped by ability to ensure each swimmer receives

    the highest quality of support.

Training Rocky City swimming club members train at multiple venues including CQUniversity Sports Complex and

World War 2 Memorial Pool in Rockhampton. All training sessions are conducted by professional swimming

coaches under the guidance of Head Coach Shane Kingston.

    Swimming Events

For many new swimmers, taking the first step and going to their first competitive meet is a

big undertaking. Our coaches understand this and are happy to share information about each

    competition.

Club Events Club events refer to events that only Rocky City members can participate in such as club nights,

presentation night and Rocky City Club Championships.

District Events Rocky City Swimming belongs to Central Queensland Swimming along with other clubs and competes in

    Central Queensland events.

External Club Events External club events refer to the majority of events run outside the Central Queensland area. These are

events that any swimming club may host and invite members from any other club to come and compete in.

Queensland State Events Queensland state events/ state championships are run by Swimming Queensland and swimmers must

achieve qualifying times to be eligible to compete.

Australian National Events Australian National events / national championships are run by Swimming Australia. Swimmers must

achieve national qualifying times before they can compete at these events.

Qualifying times State and National Age and Open competitions have Qualifying times, which indicate the time needed to be

eligible to compete. Where a qualifying time is needed, these are indicated within the Competition flyer

and the meet is promoted as a ‘proposed qualifying competition’.

Generally competitions have no qualifying time to give swimmers a chance to achieve official times for their

    competition swims.

Not all competition qualify as official qualifying meets – for example many encouragement meets are held

for junior swimmers to introduce them to competitive racing, but do not give swimmers an official time.

Qualifying times are published by Swimming Queensland (for State Long Course and Short Course

Competitions) and Swimming Australia (National Age and Open competitions) each year. Current season

qualifying times are available via the Race Secretary or the relevant State and National websites.

We stress desire, dedication, discipline and respect. Our goal is to produce top class citizens as well as top

    class swimmers.

    Competitive Swimming

    Swimming Season

The swimming calendar / year is generally broken into 3 seasons and starts in May each year

    and end in April.

Short Course Short Course season (where events are swim in a 25m pool) runs from May through to September. The

main focus during this season is the Fairy mead Short Course in Bundaberg, Rocky City Winter Short Course,

Qld Short Course Championships and National Short Course Championships.

Long Course Spring marks the start of the Long Course season (where events are swum in a 50m pool). The season runs

from September to December. The main focus of the Long Course season is Qld State Championships.

Long Course continuation (Regional and National Championships)

The continuation of the long Course season runs from January through to April with the main event being

the Australian Age and Open Championships. The main focus for junior swimmers and swimmers who have

not qualified for the National Championships is the Regional Championships.

Nomination for Events During the course of the season, the Head Coach will identify a number of ‘target’ events that the Club will

    attend.

The Head Coach reserves the right to add to or mend targeted race meets as circumstances dictate and

    new opportunities are identified.

The Nominations Secretary will advise all members of the details of these events as far in advance as is

possible via email, the Club Website and or Face book.

In order to allow time for internal administration of nominations the Race Secretary will generally close

nominations 7 days prior to the closing date advised by the hosting agency. In all cases, this date will be

    clearly communicated to members.

Entry for events will be via email. In relation to entry times, this is generally not required unless the

swimmer is claiming a faster time from an event not recorded by the Race Secretary on the Team Manager

    system.

On Line Nominations – Competitive Meets During the season there will be an increase in the number of meets that require On-Line nominations.

These generally are National Championship meets. The Race Secretary will advise when this process is

required. Members should read the instructions on the relevant meet event page on the website of

Swimming Australia, including how to obtain/recover usernames and/or passwords. These nominations

require the use of a credit card.

  • Rocky City ASC Handbook Page 12

Which Events and distances should my child compete in? Parents are encouraged to discuss with the Head Coach the strategy for the season in terms of distances

and strokes at the commencement of the season or before. This is particularly important for new members

and/or swimmers ‘aging up’ who need to have times for the longer distances that will be the norm for their

    future age groups.

Early discussions and planning will maximise the enjoyment of the sport and the number of meets that a

    swimmer will qualify to attend.

If at any time you have questions about your child’s progress or the events they should be entering please

contact the Head Coach, Shane Kingston.

Supply of Personal Best Times and Performance Data The Race Secretary is prepared, at any time, to provide you with a customised report outlining your child’s

Personal Best (PB) times. This will be particular importance in the lead up to School Swimming events such

as District or Regional trials where nomination for a number of longer distances is via ‘Paper Entry’. In these

cases you will need to provide proof to your school of a time/event swum in relation to a particular

distance/stroke. A report showing progress in particular distance/strokes is also available upon request at

    any time.

Members may also obtain times from ‘approved’ meets from the National Database by clicking on the

‘search results’ tab of the Swimming Queensland website. This information will generally suffice without

    having to request a report.

Timekeeping at outside meets Accurate recording of swimmers time for an event is a fundamental part of the sport and swim meets

cannot operate without a large number of volunteer timekeepers. One way that you can assist is by

performing timekeeping duties at outside meets. There is generally a requirement for a Club attending a

    meet to provide timekeepers.

What to Bring to Competition Meets Experienced swimmers recommend bringing the following:

    Racing swimwear, warm up swimwear

Goggles – well adjusted and leak proof

    Extra goggles just in case

Team Swim Cap – or two in case one rips

Rocky City Swimming shirt and hoddie if weather requires

Towels – two may be needed because the swimmer dries off after warm-up, between events, and

    when changing to go home

Plastic water bottle and/or drinks in containers other than glass

Highlighter to mark your swim program

Ballpoint pen or Sharpie to write on your swimmer’s program

Food – make sure that you have lots of foods that you can snack on between races to quickly refuel

For summer meets: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses

  • Rocky City ASC Handbook Page 13

Club Night Club Nights at Rocky Swimming Club are held every Friday evening commencing at 6pm starting from the

    date advised by the Committee.

Nominations for Club Night are to be submitted by email to the Club Night Coordinator at

[email protected] by no later than 6pm on the Wednesday preceding the Club

    Night.

Assistance by parents during the conduct of a Club Night is essential with timekeeping, marshalling and

starting. Club nights cannot commence until the required numbers of officials are in place.

Advice Regarding Cancellation of Club Night Advice regarding the cancellation of Club Night, for whatever reason, will be advised as a News Item on the

Club Website, via email and Facebook no later than 5pm on the afternoon of the event.

Throughout the season, all swimmers will start with a ‘seed time’ which is their PB in that stroke/distance

from the previous Club Night Season. Swimmers who have not competed in that stroke/distance before will

commence with ‘NT’ or No Time.

Club Championships Nominations for Club Championships will close on a date set by the Management Committee with no late

    nominations accepted.

All members of Rocky City Swimming Club are eligible to compete in Club Championships.

Points allocated for places will be determined by the Head Coach prior to the announcement of the event.

In cases of a point score tie for Age Champion, the winner will be decided on freestyle placing and time. In

the unlikely situation of a further tie the method of determining Age Champion will be decided by the Head

    Coach and President.

Presentation Night At the end of the season an Annual Presentation Night is held at a suitable venue. This is a special evening

in which the efforts of ALL swimmers are acknowledged.

On the evening a range of specific awards are made.
