Ready to Rock at RockPro 1! Description: RockPro I is a four-day adventure camp focused on learning to climb! Our goals are to learn about basics in rock climbing movement, belaying, rappelling, and knots. Over these four days, we will build friendships, independence, and strength in the great outdoors of Maine!

Each day will be a different adventure on the rocks. RockPro I Rock Climbing Camp is for youth who want to rock climb. We explore the mountains and coastal cliffs of Acadia. Roped climbing will start right away on day 1 while being belayed by the instructors. Campers will also learn how to belay and rappel. After gaining comfort on easier climbs, campers will have plenty of opportunities to challenge themselves on a variety of routes throughout the week and work on improving their techniques for climbing slabs, faces, and cracks. As the week progresses, participants will learn important knots and how to belay their peers. COVID-19 Policies: Even though this summer will look different than last, there will still be precautions taken to ensure safety for our campers and instructors. Acadia Mountain Guides abides to the CDC guidelines for all of our camps. We ask that you please read our COVID-19 policies which can be seen further below.

Transportation: Please try to meet at the time provided for your pick-up/drop off, our camp staff will do the same but may on occasion be a few minutes late due to traffic! Google maps should get you to any of the locations listed below. Plan accordingly and be sure to give yourself a bit of extra time on day one so that we can be sure to get everyone situated and you can say a proper goodbye to your camper. Sample Itinerary

Each day will be different than the day before it, we will constantly find new locations to go and explore. Hardly ever will we visit the same location twice in one camp.

Day 1: • Introduction to climbing equipment and refine basic skills such as harness

and knots • Principles of climbing movement • Top roping skills on low angled rock slabs

Day 2: • Face and crack climbing with an emphasis on balance, body awareness

and weight transfer • Introduction to rappelling.

Day 3: • Hike to the Summit of one of Acadia National Park’s open summits • Lunch at one of the many picnic spots on the island • Swimming in one of the many freshwater swimming spots on the island

Day 4: • A full day of rock climbing at one of Acadia’s many incredible climbing areas • Otter Cliff and Seacliff climbing • Build and traverse a rope “zip line” bridge

Rainy day options: Generally, we try to proceed with planned activities for the day unless there is a lightning danger or a major storm. Should weather preclude continuing with the day’s activities we sometimes visit a climbing wall, check out a museum, set up tent shelters and learn knots, or swim pool at the local YMCA.

Summit or Bust: Everyone comes with expectations. We will do our best to help campers achieve their expectations. However, weather, group ability, access, personal fitness, and emotions all play a role in shaping the day. We strive to make each camp week a bit different from the previous week and cannot guarantee that campers will participate in every activity mentioned in our marketing materials.

Risk and Rescue: Attending an outdoor based summer camp has some risks. It is important for both the camper and the camper’s parent or guardian to understand this. Some of the hazards that can lead to injury or death associated with this camp include but are not limited to extreme weather, demanding physical travel, vehicle transportation and falls or collisions while climbing. The most likely injuries are minor cuts and scrapes while climbing. The most important action that the camper can take toward safety is to follow the instructions of the camp leader. Our instructors draw upon solid guide education coupled with extensive experience to manage significant hazards inherent to mountain travel.

How to get the most out of RockPro I: Our camps consist of four days of activity from the time our campers arrive at camp until they go home for the day. We expect all campers to be enthusiastic and energetic at the beginning of everyday. Here are a few ways you can get your camper prepared for all the fun activities they’ll be doing at summer camp:

In the weeks before camp, do…

• 15 - 30 minutes of general physical activity to raise the heart rate and break a sweat each day. This will help ensure that your camper has the energy to accompany us on all adventures we might do during the camp in a comfortable manner. If your child gets some extra exercise before camp, they are much less likely to become fatigued and discouraged during camp.

• 10 minutes of goal making:

Sit down with your child a week or so before they are headed to camp and help them make a goal sheet, not only for camp, but also for after camp. What do they want to learn during camp? Why do they want to learn that? What will they do with the skills they gain after camp is over?

• 10 minutes of talking:

Camp is most likely going to put your child in a position where they might experience frustration on a difficult climb, or have anxiety or fear around an activity, etc. Take five minutes to sit down with your child and talk to them about how these experiences might make them feel or any concerns they may have. Our camp staff is happy to accommodate any concerns or discomforts your camper may have, but we need you to tell us about them.

Camp Leaders: Camps are typically led by outdoor education graduates or majors who are skilled climbers and are selected through an interview process that includes resume review, climbing log review, and multiple Zoom or in person interviews that include skill demonstrations and problem-solving questions. Leaders then arrive in late May to begin training that includes five-day PCIA Single Pitch Climbing Instructor Course, approximately 8 – 10 days working with and being observed by senior guides and each other, visiting a variety of locations, completing site competencies, going on a 3-day overnight training trip with senior staff, practicing van driving and completing a vehicle check, completing or recertifying wilderness medicine certification and taking a Maine Trip Leader course. Essentially, we take already skilled outdoor leaders and mentor and evaluate them for approximately 30 days before they lead a camp. As camps move into more complicated terrain, additional senior guide staff joins leaders. All leaders are expected to be extremely observant, super friendly, good communicators, safety minded in both personal and professional activities, and meticulously attentive to details.

Objectives for RockPro I: Nurturing a young climber’s love of the outdoors and the sport of climbing is one of the greatest experiences we have through our camps. These are some of the core objectives your camper will be working towards during there time in RockPro I.

• The principles of leave no trace and how to apply them • How to Belay • Introduction to Rappelling • Introduction to Body Work and Climbing Movement • Introduction to Top Rope Anchoring • Group communication and teamwork

Staying Connected:

• Cell phones are not allowed at summer camp. We want to encourage a screen free camp session and group experience. We want your camper to thrive off the experience of being in the outdoors, being attentive to safety, and genuinely connecting with their fellow campers. If you would like photos we encourage an inexpensive disposable camera.

• Leaders will provide you with their phone numbers each day if you need to reach them in an emergency. However, many of the areas we work in also do not have great service. If you are unable to reach the leaders directly, you can call our Bar Harbor office at 207-288-8186 and they will know the exact location and be able to facilitate getting a message to the camp leaders.

Drop Off COVID Procedures: Each day camper will be assessed at time of drop off for:

1. Known contact with someone who

tested positive for COVID within the last 14 days?

2. Onset of non-productive cough within last 14 days?

3. Onset of new shortness of breath within last 14 days?
