JD Hayworth, morning co-host at San Diego Sports/Talker The Mighty 1090 alongside Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton, paid a recent visit to the local offices of FOX Sports, where he came face-to-face with a giant mural featuring his grandfather and former MLB catcher for the Detroit Tigers, Ray Hayworth, reaching to lay a tag on the legendary Babe Ruth at home plate! JD’s grandfather greets passersby outside the building, while the Bambino’s image adorns the inside lobby of the building, which is located adjacent to San Diego’s Petco Park.

be much more careful about verifying any statements -- and especially any accusations leveled against someone -- much more carefully than perhaps I would have before. I think it’s fair to say that you’ve had the relatively rare experience of replacing a legend when you took over the hours previously held by Neal Boortz. How did you get yourself ready and your mind wrapped around that challenge? My program director, [WSB/Atlanta’s] Pete Spriggs, coached me a lot on that issue. He told me from our very first conversation, ‘Don’t try to be the legend, try to create your own legend.’ So I didn’t go into this thinking I had to be like Neal Boortz, I went into it understanding that I’ve got to be ‘Herman,’ period. Just the other day a caller jumped all over me for something, saying I hadn’t attacked some other caller for saying something ‘like Neal would have.’ I simply told her, ‘I’m not Neal.’ Our styles are different. I’m not trying to be Neal Boortz. I’m simply trying to fill his shoes, by creating new shoes. I still talk about the same things I have talked about on the radio for years, but I can now also offer my insights and perspective on things from running for President. How many talk show hosts on the air out there can say they’ve done that? Others can talk about what they think that’s like, but you can’t really talk about it honestly unless you’ve been there. And I have been there. I think that what has changed about my approach is the width and the depth of my experiences that I can now bring since I last hosted a regular show.

Now that you’ve been back in the radio saddle again for several months and you can truly call the radio show your own, what is it that you hope people will take away from the program from listening everyday? I hope that what they take away is the understanding that every show, every day, I am going to bring you a fresh perspective on everything we talk about. A fresh perspective on the news of the day … a fresh perspective on information provided by our government, such as the unemployment reports … a fresh perspective on what the administration is promoting to try to impact your perceptions … a fresh perspective on what’s happening in Washington and how what happens there affects you … and a fresh perspective on all of the many challenges and issues that we face in this country. And most important, a fresh perspective -- my perspective -- on how we can solve these problems and challenges that we face. That is the philosophy behind every single show we put together everyday.

‘‘ Every show, everyday, I am going to bring you a fresh perspective. ’’
