"To what shall we compare the kingdom of God,
or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that,
when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth.
But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants."
- Mark 4:30-32b
Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 17 June 2018
Happy Father’s Day to all fathers! I pray that the Lord will send a special blessing upon all
fathers, both living and deceased. May the unconditional love of God the Father shine forth in
the lives of our fathers.
This year on Father’s Day I have the special blessing of celebrating the 21st anniversary of my
ordination to the priesthood. On June 17, 1997, Archbishop John Vlazny ordained me a priest
forever at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona. What a supreme blessing the past 21
years have been: hearing confessions, offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, celebrating the
Sacraments, and helping people to know, love and serve the Lord more profoundly. I have
offered Mass at least once a day, every day, for the past 21 years. After the last Mass today, I will have offered Mass 10,617 times! On
the 50th anniversary of his priestly ordination, Pope Saint John Paul II said the priesthood was “a gift and a mystery.” I am grateful
to the Lord Jesus for the gift and mystery of sharing in His priesthood for the past 21 years.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is calling for the seventh annual Fortnight for Freedom – fourteen
days of prayer, education, and action – in support of religious freedom, from June 21 through July 4, 2018. During these two weeks,
we will celebrate several saints who were martyred for their Catholic faith and, in the face of great persecution, remained faithful to
Christ and His Church: Saints John Fisher and Thomas More (June 22), St. John the Baptist (June 24), Saints Peter and Paul (June 29),
and the First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church (June 30). Our Lord says that some demons can only be driven out by “prayer and
fasting.” (Matthew 17:21) The Fortnight for Freedom is a beautiful opportunity to combine our prayer with fasting for the protection of
our religious freedom. St. Anselm (! 1109) wrote, “In this world, God loves nothing more than the liberty of His Church.” (Magnificat. April
2015)
Thank you to our Parochial Vicar, Father Luis Vargas, who will offer the 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Masses next weekend, June 23-24,
as I enjoy some last days with family and finish packing for my journey to Rome. We are delighted that the newly ordained Father
Thé Hoang will offer the 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Masses next Sunday. Please come and pray with Father Thé as he offers some
of his first Masses as a priest.
Next weekend, June 23-24, we will take up a Second Collection for Peter’s Pence. Your contributions to Peter’s Pence go directly to
Pope Francis, and enable the Holy Father to respond with emergency assistance to the most needy throughout the world: those who
suffer as a result of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Please use the special envelope in your packet for this collection.
Next Sunday, June 24, on the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, at 6:00 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Parish in
Rochester, Archbishop Christopher Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio of His Holiness, Pope Francis, to the United States of America,
will be present to solemnly elevate St. John the Evangelist Church to a Co-Cathedral for the Diocese of Winona-Rochester. Every
parish in the diocese was given three tickets for the faithful to attend this elevation Mass; a free ticket is required to attend the
elevation Mass because seating is limited.
Thank you for the many kind words, cards, gifts, and prayers as I prepare to leave for my new assignment in Rome. May the Lord
reward you a hundredfold for your generosity!
Bishop Quinn has released me from my diocesan responsibilities as the Pastor of St. Francis Parish, the Moderator of the Curia, and
the Director of the Diaconate so that I can accept my new assignment for the Holy See at the Congregation for the Clergy in Rome
beginning July 2, 2018. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve you as your pastor here at St. Francis of Assisi Parish for almost
two years. Although it is very difficult to be leaving our diocese for the next five years, I continue to trust in the Lord, and pray that I
have the strength to do His will. I take courage in the words of St. Paul: “God makes all things work together for the good for those who
love Him.” (Romans 8:28)
Bishop Quinn has appointed Father James Seitz as the new pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish beginning July 2, 2018. Father Seitz
was ordained by Bishop John Vlazny on June 15, 1994, and is currently the pastor of Good Shepherd, Jackson; St. Luke, Sherburn;
and St. Joseph, Lakefield. Please pray for him that he will be a holy pastor: a “faithful servant of Christ, and a steward of the mysteries of
God.” (1 Corinthians 4:1)

A Note f rom Father Lu is
Tú enviaste a tu Hijo Jesús,
para redimir y salvar a los hombres,
El quiso nacer en una familia como la nuestra,
le diste a la Virgen María como madre
y a San José como padre;
Hoy, muy especialmente, te pedimos por todos
y cada uno de los padres…
Dales fuerza en su lucha;
firmeza en el cumplimiento del deber;
paz para poder integrar la familia;
lucidez como consejeros del hogar;
delicadeza para que fomenten
debidamente el amor;
capacidad de sacrificio para que lleven
la cruz sin rebeldía;
prudencia en los momentos difíciles;
esperanza en las horas oscuras de la vida;
amor que comprende, comparte, consuela,
estimula y sostiene.
Concede a nuestros padres paz, tranquilidad,
bienestar en el tiempo y la vida eterna, donde se
forma la familia definitiva de los que creen
y aman a Dios.
Amen.

The Greater Cathol ic Communi ty TREE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS: SCOTT
HAHN REFLECTS ON THE ELEVENTH
SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
In the cryptic message of the
prophet Ezekiel, long centuries be-
fore the Lord’s coming, God gave
His people reason to hope. Ezekiel
glimpsed a day when the Lord God would place a
tree on a mountain in Israel, a tree that would “put
forth branches and bear fruit.” Who could have pre-
dicted that the tree would be a cross on the hill of Cal-
vary, and that the fruit would be salvation?
Ezekiel foresees salvation coming to “birds of every
kind”—thus, not just to the people of Israel, but also to
the Gentiles, who will “take wing” through their new life
in Christ. God indeed will “lift high the lowly tree,” as
He solemnly promises.
Such salvation surpasses humanity’s most ambitious
dreams. And so we express our gratitude in the psalm:
“Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.” It is indeed
good, and better still to give thanks with praise. The
psalmist speaks of those who are just upon the earth,
but looks to God as the source and measure of justice,
of righteousness. Like Ezekiel, he evokes the image of a
flourishing tree to describe the lives of the just. The im-
age, again, suggests the Cross as the measure of right-
eousness.
The Cross is a sign of contradiction to those who would
rather “flourish” in worldly terms. As St. Paul emphasizes
to the Corinthians, we need courage. Our faith makes
us strong and it is proved in our deeds. He reminds us
that we will be judged by the ways our faith manifests
itself in works: “so that each may receive recompense,
according to what he did in the body, whether good
or evil.”
God Himself will empower the works He expects from
us, though we freely choose to correspond to His
grace. In the prophetic oracles, He scattered the seed
that sprang up and became the mustard tree, large
enough to accommodate all the birds of the sky, just
as Ezekiel had seen. He gave this doctrine to His disci-
ples in terms they were able to understand, and He
provided a full explanation. In the sacraments He pro-
vides still more: the grace of faith and the courage we
need to live in the world as children of God.
