Ecojoist® Design and Manufacture

>> Ecojoist® – A brief history

The metal web system was originally devised by Truswal Systems in

1976 and is widely used throughout the USA.

Truswal introduced the system to the UK in the 1980's. The system

has now been adopted by many major building developers across the

UK and has already been acclaimed as a quality product throughout

the industry, offering huge advantages over other floor joist systems.

The system is now widely used in housing and commercial

developments.

In 1999 Robinson Manufacturing helped to pioneer the manufacture

of Ecojoist® in the UK as a joint project with Gang-Nail® Systems, and

is now the UK’s largest manufacturer of Ecojoists®.

Robinson Manufacturing continue to work closely

with Gang-Nail®, who operate under an exclusive

licence arrangement with Truswal Systems, to

develop product innovations for the construction

industry.

In brief, Ecojoist® is a modern and efficient open web joist system which is being adopted widely by

housebuilders and commercial property developers across the UK. Ecojoists® consist of parallel stress timber

flanges joined with engineered V-shaped steel webs with nailplated zones from Gang-Nail®. The result is an easy

to install system, and with its open web design, enables fast fixing of plumbing and electrical infrastructure.

What is Ecojoist®?

>> Ecojoist® key benefits

• Open web system - no need to notch or drill for pipes

and cables.

• Ecojoists® sizes are compatible with those of solid joists

- no need for expensive drawing changes.

• Virtual elimination of shrinkage - no more call backs.

• Made to measure - no site wastage.

• Retro installation of additional services with minimum

of disruption.

• Ecojoists® are 40 percent lighter than equivalent solid

joists - easier handling on site.

• Wide surfaces - easy chipboard and plasterboard fixing.

>> Ease of use

As illustrated opposite, some of the key features of the Ecojoist®

system are the ease and speed at which services can be installed.

With its open web system, plumbing and wiring can be achieved in a

fraction of the time when compared to conventional solid timber

joists. This also reduces the need for surface run pipework.

The Ecojoist® system is designed to be compatible in size with solid

timber sizes and brickwork. With a minimum of 72mm wide flanges

the system provides a large area for fixing of floor deck and ceiling

panels. The system can also be top chord supported reducing the

amount of metalwork required.

The are many features and benefits of the Ecojoist® system, the biggest possibly being the cost savings that can

be achieved. With a design which is light, easy to install and with its unique open web framework Ecojoists® not

only minimise waste materials but enable rapid installation of services.

Ecojoist® Features and Benefits

>> Strength vs weight

Due to the reduced amount of timber used within

the Ecojoist® system and hence the reduced weight,

joists can be easily transported, positioned and

adjusted prior to fixing. In addition the need for load

bearing walls is reduced which can result in cost

savings for foundations.

The galvanised V-shaped steel webs provide an

immensely strong structure whilst adding minimal

weight to the system.

“As far as we are

concerned this product

has a zero maintenance

requirement.

”>> Cost savings

Information from National House Builder states that

Ecojoist® will reduce maintenance, reduce

installation time leading to savings on overall project

duration and costs.

As the installation time is reduced, not only are

contractor costs reduced but overall site overheads

are minimised due to faster site completion.

National House Builders have demonstrated that on

a typical 100 house development of three bedroom

homes that significant overall savings can be

achieved with an Ecojoist® system.

>> Regulations

Ecojoist® has been successfully tested in

accordance with:

• BS476 : Part 8 : 1972 - 30 minute Fire Resistance

• BS476 : Part 21 : 1987 - 60 minute Fire Resistance

• Approved Document E - requirement E2,

40dB airborne sound installation.

In addition a range of material permutations have

been professionally assessed with regard to fire

resistance in accordance with BS476 : Part 21 : 1987.

>> Flexibility on site

All Ecojoists® are made to measure to aid

speed and ease of installation.

The manner in which the joists are fixed

varies and detailed technical information

is available in the Ecojoist® Technical

Manual from Robinson Manufacturing.

Ecojoists® work with all standard fitting

techniques and fixtures but come with the

added flexibility of being able to make

adjustments quickly and easily on site.

>> Gang-Nail®

Robinson Manufacturing work closely with

Gang-Nail® on a continuous basis of

product development. This arrangement

enables us to offer new products and

construction technologies to our

customers.

“We save money over

solid joists on houses

of 900 square feet

or greater.

Robinson Manufacturing is the UK's largest manufacturer of

Ecojoists®, with production facilities for 15000 floors per annum.

Together with the most modern, purpose built production and

design equipment we offer an unrivalled service to our customers.

Our capabilities

>> Sales and Technical support

Our sales and technical support teams have many years of relevant

industry experience.

We work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, surveyors

and builders to offer expert advice from initial building development

stages to co-ordinated supply of the finished product.

We also offer on-site support and training for the timber engineered

products we supply.

>> CAD/CAM

Robinson Manufacturing utilise the latest CAD/CAM

facilities linked to the latest manufacturing

capabilities. These systems enable our design

engineers to be flexible in approach, accurate and

interpret customer requirements quickly,

incorporating all fixing and service details to comply

with Building Regulations.

All our personnel are trained to interpret CAD

drawings to optimise and streamline the production

process and ensure that our products are produced

accurately and professionally first time every time.

>> Manufacturing facilities

Investment in our manufacturing equipment at our

two production facilities has led to Robinson

Manufacturing being able to produce high volume,

accurate, high quality products on a consistent basis.

Our equipment is environmentally efficient and

ensures minimal waste of timber.

Our current facilities include:

• 2 Ecojoist® saws

• 6 Ecojoist® assembly beds

• 3 Ecojoist® hydraulic presses

• 2 roof truss saws

• 2 roof truss hydraulic presses

>> Nationwide coverage

As Robinson Manufacturing work with a

variety of national house builders we use

a combination of our own fleet of vehicles

along with tried and tested contract

haulage companies to distribute

Ecojoists® nationwide.

All our drivers are trained to relevant

standards for loading, storage and

handling of Ecojoists® to avoid

product/site damage and minimise

on-site safety hazards.
