LABOR DAY FUN FACTS **Labor Day is Monday, September 6th**

Did you know Labor Day did not originate in the United States? In fact, it began in Canada.

Labor Day was officially recognized as a holiday in Oregon.

Though Labor Day is known for camping and BBQing; more hot dogs are consumed on the Fourth of July than any other holiday.

Speaking of hot dogs… Los Angeles is the #1 consumer of hot dogs in the U.S. Go figure, the state of healthy living consumes the most dogs.

Did You Know

The first traffic light in the United States was put

up in Cleveland in 1914. Surprising it really

hasn't changed much! An electric traffic light was

developed in

1912 by Lester

Wire, a

policeman in

Salt Lake City,

Utah, who also

used red-green

lights. On 5

August 1914,

the American

Traffic Signal Company installed a traffic signal

system on the corner of East 105th Street and

Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio.

DID YOU KNOW?

1. On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed, 400 were police officers and firefighters, in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in NYC, at the Pentagon building in Washington, D.C., and in a plane crash near Shanksville, PA.

2. 9/11 was not the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. A bombing in February of 1993 killed six people.

3. On any given workday, up to 50,000 employees worked in the WTC twin towers, and an additional 40,000 passed through the complex.

4. After the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, the rescue and recovery clean-up of the 1.8 million tons of wreckage from the WTC site took 9 months.

5. Though both the police and fire departments of New York City had their own emergency response procedures, the two departments did not have a coordinated response plan to a major incident.

6. In 2001, New York City fire evacuation procedures only required mandatory evacuations for floors immediately surrounding a fire. After a plane struck Building 1 of the WTC, Building 2 employees were initially told to stay in the building.

7. 18 people were rescued alive from the rubble of the World Trade Center site. Cases of post-traumatic stress are com-mon among 9/11 survivors and rescue workers. Respiratory problems, like asthma and lung inflammation, also developed at abnormal rates for those in and around the World Trade Center during and after the attacks.

Are Your Brakes Trying to Tell You Something?

If your brakes are trying to tell you something, you should pay attention. A properly operating brake system helps

ensure safe vehicle control and operation and it should be checked immediately if you suspect any problems,

says the non-profit Car Care Council.

“While an annual brake inspection is a good way to ensure brake safety, motorists should NOT ignore signs that their

brakes need attention,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. The Car Care Council reminds motorists

to look for the following warning signs that their brakes need to be inspected:

• Noise: screeching, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes.

• Pulling: vehicle pulls to one side while braking.

• Low Pedal: brake pedal nearly touches the floor before engaging.

• Hard Pedal: must apply extreme pressure to the pedal before brakes engage.

• Grabbing: brakes grab at the slightest touch to the pedal.

• Vibration: brake pedal vibrates or pulses, even under normal braking condi-

tions.

A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom:

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight 293, non-stop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and, therefore, we should have a smooth and - AHHHHHH!"

Silence followed, and after a few minutes the captain came back on the intercom and said:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier; but, while I was talking, the flight attendant spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!”

A passenger in coach shouted, "That's nothing. He should see the back of mine!"
