As we look back on the month of January we reflect on all the wonderful learning opportunities and activities that took place at Robertson School. The students have settled in after the holidays and they have been working very hard on their academic and social goals from the first reporting period. They will have lots of work to share with you at the student-led conferences to be held on March

18th and 19

th. The whole school was introduced to the monthly school theme of “ RESPECT” by the grade 3’s in room P1 and the grade 5’s in Room 103 at the monthly assembly. The huge majority of our students always show respect to others. Congratulations to all the students who have made a great effort to improve in this area and also thank you to all the adults who continue to remind students to practice their school responsibilities and to be respectful. It is certainly making a difference! The students in Nursery to grade 5 were treated to a wonderful presentation by MTYP entitled Munscha Meeya by Robert Munsch on January 12th. Thank you to Nancy Adkins for continuing to organize these enriching theatre opportunities for the children and thank you to Parent Council for helping to sponsor these events. We were very proud and humbled by the way our Robertson Community once again came so quickly together and held a Toonie Drive and a brief assembly on January 18th to help support the people of Haiti so devastated by the recent earth-quake. Our students, staff and parents are always eager to show they care and offer donations and hope to people in need. We were able to send a cheque for $812.00 to the Red Cross on behalf of Robertson School. Thank-you! Our Community Conference on January 21st held here at Robertson was certainly timely and informative with Mary McCown from the Canadian Centre for Child Protection talking to parents and some students about the most up to date knowledge of Face book Safety. Supper consisted of pizza and salad giving time for families to visit and connect. Thank you to Canada’s Canine Academy for presenting a great dog and cat show for all the children. It was a great evening and we encourage all families to participate next year if they missed the opportunity this year.

February promises to be a very busy one with all our I LOVE

TO READ activities. As in years past, guest readers are welcome to read to the various classrooms throughout the month and many classrooms are inviting family members to come in and share their favourite book. Please let your child’s classroom teacher know if this is something you would like to do. Our theme for I Love to Read this year is the Olympic Games and classrooms are representing various countries. If these teams read enough books they earn bronze, silver or gold medal status. Our school goal is to read over 10,000 books by the end of February. If students reach this goal, student classroom reps have requested a school dance. We have no doubt that our students will reach this challenge! Please help us encourage and support your children to read as many books as possible. Books you read to them count too!! Also, attached is a calendar prepared by the Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg with ideas you might like to try at home . We are celebrating the Spirit of the Olympic Games at Robertson School this month. On Feb. 11th at 10:00 we will have an assembly in the gym for all our students commemorating the Olympic Games and including a symbolic torch run. That same afternoon the grades 5 & 6 students will also be attending a Pre-Olympic international hockey game

at the MTS Centre when the Swiss and Belarus Men’s Hockey Team compete. What an exciting opportunity for our students! Throughout the month all students will be taking part in various phys ed and classroom activities that highlight the Olympic Games. It should be a great month for athletes and fans. Go Canada! A reminder that our teachers will be participating in an in-service day on technology on Friday, February 12th. There will be no school for students. We are all looking forward to our Manitoba family holiday, Louis Riel Day, on February 15th. Regardless of whether you are involved in outdoor activities, visiting friends and family or watching the Olympic Games, please take the day to spend time as a family and enjoy each other’s company! WHAT A GREAT MONTH WE HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO!

February Music News from Mrs. Le Grand

Room 131 keeps buzzing with the sounds of musical fun and learning. The grade 1, 2 and 3 classes are singing, exploring the winter theme, reading and writing rhythms, learning about and listening to instruments and playing musical games. The grade 4 classes are learning the recorder and realizing that playing a musical instrument is not always easy. The grade 5 classes are learning the theory of music and studying the instruments and songs that they will see and hear on February 25 when they go to a concert at the Centennial Concert Hall. The grade 6 classes are looking into careers in music and instruments that they might want to try in Grade 7. As well as the regular classroom music, all of the grade 1-6 classes are experiencing some new and exciting adventures with our guest artist drummer, Evans Coffie, from January 25 to February 5. He will be exploring drumming and story telling with all the classes. The Robertson Singers are rehearsing for the Winnipeg Music Festival. They will be performing on Wednesday, March 3 at 10:00a.m. at Westminster United Church. This is a wonderful opportunity to perform for other students and receive feedback from other choral directors. The Grade 4-6 choir has held auditions and is rehearsing for their upcoming production of “Oliver”. We are looking forward to bringing Oliver, Mr. Bumble, Widow Corney, Assistants, Workhouse Kids, Dodger, Fagin, Nancy, Fagin’s Kids, all the Girls and Mr. Brownlow to life in our gym. The performance will be on Thursday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. in our new gym. More information will be coming to choir members soon.

February 25: Grade 5 students go to Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Concert. March 3: The Robertson Singers perform in The Winnipeg Music Festival,

10:00 a.m. at Westminster United Church. April 15: Grade 4-6 Choir Musical presentation “Oliver” at 6:30 p.m. in the gym.

As February 14th, Valentine’s Day, approaches, your child may wish to bring valentines to school

for his or her classmates.

To avoid any hurt feelings when students could feel left out, we are asking that you ensure there are enough valentines for all

students in the class, or that you do not send any at all.

Gr. 5 and 6 Volleyball Students began practices in the middle of January to prepare for upcoming half day volleyball tournaments. Some Gr. 6 students in rooms 102 and 105 have already attended their tournament at Lansdowne on Thursday, January 28th. The remainder for the students will compete in February on the following dates: Feb. 5th a.m. at Robertson - room 101 volleyball players Coach – Mr. Stacey Feb. 5th a.m. at Robertson - room 103 volleyball players Coach – Mr. Stacey Feb 10th p.m. at King Edward - room 102 volleyball players Coach – Mr. Sabatini Feb. 16th a.m. at Meadows West - room 105 volleyball players Coach – Ms. De Luca The tournaments are non-competitive and co-ed, and the focus is on skill development, team play and of course, FUN.

Physical Education Olympic Focus and Assembly During the time the Vancouver Olympics are being held, Robertson students will be involved in their own Olympic events while participating in their physical education classes. We will be simulating certain Olympic events such as speed skating, bobsled, biathlon and hockey during class time. To celebrate the events above and the excitement of the onset of the Vancouver Winter Olympiad, we will be holding an Olympic assembly on Feb. 11th at 9:30 a.m.

Gr. 6 Basketball Gr. 6 basketball will begin shortly after the volleyball season has ended. It will available for all interested Gr. 6 students. The games will be co-ed and non-competitive. A schedule and permission slip will be sent out shortly if your daughter/son has expressed interest. Mr. Brent Stacey Physical Education Teacher

Robertson Community truly gives generously to help

those in need.


The patrols have had a few days of freezing cold weather. Luckily the cold weather did not last long. The patrols have been providing a very important service to Robertson School and we all appreciate them for the hard work they do.

Patrols were given the opportunity to take part in a free Basketball event at the U of W on January 29th at the Duckworth Centre. Door prizes were drawn throughout the evening.

The Patrols will also be having a patrol movie and snack during February. This is to award them for their hard work and dedication.

We have confirmed that another patrol appreciation Moose game will be held soon, but the date and time are still being worked out.

Also, there will be a School Patrol Day in June for the Goldeyes. We will have more information about these and other offers as the dates come closer.

These are just a few things to look forward to.

Community Conference 2010

What a wonderful evening of information

and celebration of our community.

Thank you to all who attended the information session on Face book safety, and for the children, the Canine Instructional Academy of Manitoba dog and cat show. Our presenter from the Canadian Center for Child Protection, Mary McCown, was excellent and shared so much knowledge about safety on the internet and with Face book. The children were thoroughly entertained by the trained dogs and cat and we thank Dawn Piche and her staff at Canada’s Canine

Academy. The evening was a huge success with over 150 people attending. Thank you to parent councils and to the staff of Robertson School, Lord Nelson School and Andrew Mynarski V.C. School who worked very hard to organize this wonderful community event.

A Note from the Nurse . . .

Tell your child “I love you.”

Tell your child you love him or her every day.

Feeling loved and accepted is powerful and important in building healthy self-esteem for your child. Your child needs to feel accepted as a person all the time, even when his or her behaviour is unacceptable. Some parents grew up as children never hearing the words “I love you” or hearing them only when family members waned to control or manipulate their behaviour. As a result, you as a parent may feel uncomfortable saying the words. Here are some tips to help you say, “I love you” more often:

• Let’s hear it! We all need to hear loving statements from people we care about. It may be easy to assume that your kids know you love them. After all, you do love them and you probably do a lot of loving things for them. But those aren’t the same as saying “I love you” out loud. Feeling love, doing loving things, and saying, “I love you” are all important.

• Start slowly. If you find it hard to get the words of your mouth, start slowly. Practice saying it out loud when you’re alone, or to your family pet! You may want to start by writing your kids love notes and sneak them into your child’s lunch bag or under his or her pillow.

• Let’s hear it some more. Maybe hearing “I love you” gives your kids the creeps. Say it anyhow. As a gift to yourself, communicate your love daily. At least.

• Keep it simple! “I love you” is a complete sentence. We don’t need to tie our feelings to the child’s behaviour. “ I love you when you make your bed” suggests that you love your child because of his/her behaviour or accomplishments. “I love you” Period.

• No “buts” about it. Don’t use “I love you” as a lead-in to talking about something your child has done that you find disturbing. If you say “ I love you, but your room is a mess”, the child doesn’t hear the statement before the but, and only hears “your room is a mess”.

• No expectations. Don’t expect your child to say “I love you” back. If your child hasn’t learned how to say “I love you” yet, that’s OK.

• Turn love inward. Next to love you give your child, the best gift you can give another person is the love you give yourself! So, look in the mirror. Look into your eyes. Say, “I love you”. No " buts”. No

qualifiers. Say it out loud. Say it often. Mean it. (adapted from www.positiveparenting.com)

This is an opportunity for parents and children who are three years old to get to know each other and provide learning opportunities in readiness for Nursery School next year. HEALTHY FAMILY COOKING CLASSES

As part of our Parent/Family Room Program, we would like to invite parents to participate in Healthy Family Cooking classes on Thursday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. beginning on February 11 in room 144. These classes will include easy-to-make economical recipes for families. All will participate in planning, cooking and eating foods we prepare. These classes will be facilitated by Helen Lesser (an experienced foods teacher) and Nancy Adkins. Child care will be provided. PEANUT / NUT & SEAFOOD FREE SCHOOL

There are students who come to our school who have severe life threatening allergies to either PEANUTS, NUTS or SEAFOOD, so we are reminding you not to send these in you child’s lunches.

Mitts or Gloves Needed - Lunch Program will often lend mitts or gloves to students who forget to bring them to school, so if anyone has extra to donate to us, we would greatly appreciate it!

Special Lunch Hour Activities - Please do not send a warm up on the days that your child is in choir or any other lunch hour activity.

Substitute Lunches - Lunch Program provides a substitute lunch for students who forget or do not bring a lunch. A note is sent home the day that the student received the lunch. It then needs to be signed and returned with $1.00 the following day.

Spoons - Please remember to pack a spoon in your child's lunch. We give out too many spoons during the lunch hour. My suggestion is to pack a bunch of spoons in a small snack bag and keep it in your child’s lunch kit.

Notes - Students who are full time in the lunch program and will not be staying for lunch on a certain day need a note or give a verbal consent from a parent or guardian. If they don’t have a note or consent they with not be able to leave the school.

Warm-ups - Please try not to send warm ups every day. All food must be pre-cooked. (No raw meats or uncooked noodles-i.e. Kraft Dinner or Mr. Noodles.)

Tax Receipts We are now issuing receipts on the day that we receive full time fees, so please ask for the receipts from your oldest child. There will be a $5.00 charge for any receipts that have to be reissued. The families that send in post dated MONTHLY cheques will receive their receipts for January to June in June.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Well, I’m sure that everyone is back into their routines after Winter Break. I would like to thank everyone who ordered from our Mom’s Pantry order. We were able to raise $712.51 with Mom’s Pantry and $124.94 at our Winter Concert. The proceeds from Parent Council’s portion of the 50/50 which totalled $80.00 was donated to the Christmas Cheer Board. Our latest fundraiser Alantra-Donelli will begin in the middle of February. For those of you who are ordering, please remember to check the delivery date and time to pick up your order. Based on past experiences we are not offering a long window of time to pick up as it is frozen food. It’s a great time to meet families from our neighbouring schools and our own and to get some good information. I would like to thank the parents and staff who volunteered from Andrew Mynarski VC, Lord Nelson and Robertson School. Without these great people we would not be able to put on this community event. Our next Parent Council meeting is February 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the Library. Child care is always available during our meetings. It’s been wonderful to see more parents attending our meetings.
