«Making things by hand is what I was born to do»

26 years and a childhood dream: to become an

inventor. At school, he had a passion for

physics and could not resist finding out how

the world around him works.

He grew and studied between Italy and the

United States, but wherever he lived, he always

felt like a craftsman and he understood that

creating with his hands was his true passion.

Murano glass is connected to ancient

knowledge, handed down through the

centuries. It has the appeal of fire and the

power to shape objects. And Roberto fell in

love with it. So he decided to commit himself

to this material, convinced that there could be

a new way to become a Master Glassmaker.

He respects the values of this craft and he

brings together passion, scientific training and

modernity. Today he is the youngest glass

master in Murano and, together with his team,

he produces handcrafted glass objects made

in his furnace, Wave Murano Glass.

Wave Murano Glass: digital craftsmanship in line with tradition

Roberto Beltrami does not have family ties in

the Murano tradition, but he managed to

acquire the skills of the great masters in a

short period of time. Like all Murano glass

blowers, he has a great deal of respect for

tradition and he is not a rebel, but he decided

to bring his concept of the craftsman from the

mainland.

Wave Murano Glass respects practices

which have been established over centuries,

but adding an extra tool to this tradition:

youth’s enthusiasm to try out new paths.

Roberto loves having his hands busy, but he

knows he is a child of the digital age. With this

awareness, he has introduced new processes

to an art that has been virtually changeless for

centuries. He knows that the value of young

people is having an open mind and a fresh

point of view. Armed with this belief, Roberto

has quickly become an innovator, as well as a

point of reference within the Murano

glassmaking tradition.



Centuries old techniques, modern processes

Roberto introduced significant new

developments such as new furnace designs

and some arsenic-free coloured glass, such

as opaline and ruby gold.

He holds the power of creation and it is for

this reason that he wants to improve on

things with the help of his co-workers.

He put what he had learned during his

studies in physics and chemistry in the

United States to good use. With a wealth of

theoretical knowledge that lives alongside his

passion for handwork, Roberto started

training from scratch thanks to his open and

curious outlook, knowing that new challenges

always bring opportunities.

Today, his concept of innovation goes hand

in hand with respect for tradition: it combines

technical skills and the ability to improve

production processes, updating the times

and methods. This makes him a modern

craftsman, an experimenter open to the

world, in line with the motivations and trends

of the new craftsmen of the digital age.

have a shape as well, and they can become

glass objects made especially for you.

One-of-a-kind pieces where design and

craftsmanship are two sinuous lines that

come together. Roberto and his team often

work on original artistic projects, collections

and individual pieces, planned together with

the client, from design to creation.

Simple ideas, which become art, with new

and different styles every time. Because deep

down, creating means giving shape to

something which did not exist before.

The vase is first shaped by the glass master.

Then, playing with the “battuto” technique,

the layers of color inside the vase are brought

to surface with a geometric shaded texture.

These massive vases are blown using

the “Rostrato” tecnique.

The vase is covered by bits of hot glass

and each spike is then pulled and

sculpted by the glass master.

Blown glass colored plate with an organic

casual shape. The unique shape is obtained

by spinning the glass so fast that the edges

stretch in an uneven way.

The goto (Venetian dialect word for cup) was the typical drinking cup

hand-blown by the glass master with his own artistic mind.

To keep hydrated, in front of the roaning 1000° C furnaces,

glass masters drank lots of water... and lots of wine!
