SBISD School Board Candidates’ Forum
There are three places open for the Sulphur Bluff ISD School Board and five candi-
dates. Each candidate was sent survey questions: Who are you? (Give any informa-
tion that you think is pertinent.) How long have you lived in the SBISD school dis-
trict? What do you hope to accomplish as a member of SBISD school board? Why
do you want to be on the school board? Anything you would like to add? Following
are their responses:
Brian Dorner: I am Brian Dorner. I am married to Dana Dorner. I have 3 chil-
dren—Landon (freshman), Tori (7th grade), and Ann Marie (3rd grade). I have lived
in the SBISD district all my life. I am currently on the board and have served on it
for the past 5 years. As a member of SBISD school board, I hope to maintain and
improve, when and where needed, the quality of education for the children of our
district and to continue to have a school that our community can take pride in, sup-
porting in all areas. I attended SBISD K-12 and graduated in 1987. I believe we have
a great school and am proud to be a part of it.
Donnie Powers: My name is Donnie Powers, Jr., the father of Kaci (freshman) and
Hunter (8th) Powers. I graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1989 and am
an active member of the Cross Spur Cowboy Church with strong Christian values. I
have been serving the Sulphur Bluff community for 10 years as a member of the
Sulphur Bluff Volunteer Fire Department. I’m employed at the City of Commerce in
the Fire Department for 7 years and part-time for the City of Sulphur Springs Fire
Department. Three years of the seven years with Commerce I have held the rank of
lieutenant. Also I have served on the City of Commerce Benefits Board all 7 years.
We have lived in the Sulphur Bluff ISD district for 10 years and 35 years in Hopkins
County. As a member of the Sulphur Bluff ISD School Board, I would hope to ac-
complish many positive aspects to benefit not only the faculty and students, but also
the Sulphur Bluff community as well. In anything I do I always believe that there is
a way to do better or make it better. Possibilities are endless, and endless hard work
is what I put into something to try and achieve those possibilities. And that would be
an asset to the Sulphur Bluff ISD Board. I would like to thank Sulphur Bluff ISD for
giving me the opportunity to answer these questions. Please exercise your right to
vote in all elections. Thank you and God bless.— Donnie Powers, Jr.
John Vance: My name is John Vance. My wife, Cathy, is the 5th grade teacher at
Sulphur Bluff ISD where our two sons are students. I am employed as a Texas
Ranger with the Texas Department of Public Safety and work in Hopkins County.
My family and I have lived in the Sulphur Bluff ISD school district almost three
years (2 years 10 months). My goal is to provide the students of Sulphur Bluff ISD
with the best education by providing the best teachers, administrators, and facilities.
Because I am new to the community, I will bring to this board a different outlook
with a fresh new perspective to the way the school board moves the district forward.
I am not running against these men, I am running for the position. My whole focus is
to be able to provide the best education for our students. Our future is our children
so I want to work with other board members to provide our children with the best
education and resources Sulphur Bluff can provide.

FFA Attends
Nationals This year’s National FFA Conven-
tion attendees had a BLAST! We
did everything from waking the
very busy streets of Indianapolis to
meeting the actor who played Mi-
chael Myers in the latest Halloween
movie at the haunted house we sur-
vived. The attendees included Jer-
emy Coberley, Landon Overly,
Becca Naylor, Clay Mitchell,
Shelby Williams, Cheyenne Bryant,
and Erin Zeringue as well as the
chaperone, Mr. Ramirez. Our five
day trip was comprised of an eight
hour drive and a nights stay in
Sikeston, Missouri the first day.
Another six hour drive the second
day until reaching the big city and
registering at the convention center.
After registration we were informed
that the Lady Antebellum concert
we were planning on attending was
already sold out. So instead, the
next day, after visiting the National
FFA Center we walked around the
exhibit halls and met other kids
from across the country which was
a great experience. Then later that
evening we went to a hypnotist’s
show where Becca Naylor was hyp-
notized. “I really don’t remember
much of the experience but know it
had to have been pretty interesting
due to all of the teasing I received
afterwards. I had just known I woke
up feeling more rested then I’ve felt
since 4th grade, so I loved it.” The
following day we attended the first
general session along with 46,000
other some-odd members and really
got the feel for what FFA can do.
Later that night we went to the
haunted house, as previously
stated , and the next morning started
the very long drive home. We look
forward to Sulphur Bluff attending
next year’s convention.
