• Major rehabilitation in 1996
• 9,998 feet long, which is nearly 2 miles
• 23 feet curb to curb
• 2 travel lanes
• 8,200 vehicles on weekdays (average)
• 6,320 vehicles on weekends (average)
• Annual bridge inspection
• Rating of fair – a “5” on a 0-9 bridge inspection
scale used nationally

• Work to paint center bridge spans complete by
June 22, 2018
• Finishes effort to paint entire Norris Bridge
• New paint protects structural steel from
deterioration
• $1 million spot structural steel repairs completed
during painting project
• 24-hour temporary traffic signals will be removed
when project is complete in late June

What is a bridge deck overlay?

• Travel surface on the bridge
• Acts as a protective layer coating the bridge’s steel grid deck
• Smooths the ride for motorists
• Steel grid deck is what supports weight of vehicle traffic, not the travel surface
Why does the deck overlay need to be replaced?

• Current overlay has reached end of its service life
• Frequent unscheduled repairs to fix concrete breakup
• Drivers face unanticipated delays
• Need for improved protection over steel grid deck
• Thermoplastic polymer additive
• When mixed with conventional asphalt,
the combination becomes a waterproof material
• Improves skid resistance
• Protects steel grid deck underneath
• Must be applied at optimal
temperatures for quality

• Drivers can expect 5-10 min. of delay or less on most crossings
• 24-hour mobile paving work zone on Mondays – Fridays
• No work scheduled Saturdays and Sundays
• One-way, alternating traffic
• Traffic controlled by Automated Flagging Assistance Device
• Certified flagger is operating flagging devices from nearby
vehicle to repair any malfunctions and oversee traffic flow

• Speed limit reduced to 35 mph during project
• Drivers will be traveling next to heavy equipment
• Light stands switched on at night
• No steel plates
• Potential for brief rough ride when traveling on milled surface, steel grid deck

• Vehicle width restriction of 9 feet
• Overnight closure and 85-mile detour will be needed for at least
one evening, with several evenings potentially needed
• Specific bridge closure date or dates will be announced in advance to help the
community plan
• Emergency vehicles will always be permitted to pass through the work zone
