The Colonials are coming off a 74-58 victory over Fordham (11/13/12) in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Petersen Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. The win helped RMU avoid its first 0-3 start since the 2009-10 campaign as redshirt senior guard Velton Jones led four players in double figures scoring for Robert Morris with 18 points while also compiling five assists. Junior guard Karvel Anderson contributed 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while sophomore forward Lucky Jones and redshirt junior guard Coron Williams added 15 and 13 points, respectively. The Colonials return home to Charles L. Sewall Center after taking on the Musketeers Saturday, host- ing Bowling Green Monday, Nov. 19, as part of the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off. RMU will also host Cleveland State Tuesday, Nov. 20, to close out the regular-season tourney. Quick Stat of the Night - While it’s just three games into the 2012-13 season, it looks as if junior forward Vaughn Morgan can be a major factor in the paint defensively for Robert Morris this year. A junior college from transfer from Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas, Morgan has already compiled nine blocks in his first three games, including five against Lehigh (11/12/12) in the opening round of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off. Morgan’s nine blocks in the early going are already leading the Northeast Conference, and if he keeps up his current pace of 3.0 rejections per game, he will shatter the RMU single-season record. The single-season mark of 35 was estab- lished by former forward Rob Robinson (2008-10) during 2008-09 season, and Robinson’s record broke a school mark that had stood for over 25 years. Saturday’s Opponent and The All-Time Series - Robert Morris and Xavier will meet on the hard- wood for the fourth time Saturday, with theMus- keteers holding a 3-0 edge in the all-time series. In the last meeting between the two programs, Xavier posted a 78-57 victory over RMU at the Cintas Center Dec. 31, 2008. In that contest for- mer Colonial guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) paced Robert Morris with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including a 3-for-7 performance from beyond the arc. He also added five rebounds and three assists. Chappell was one of two players to reach double figures in scoring against the Musketeers, as former forward Rob Robinson (2008-10) added 12 points, also on 6-of-14 shooting, off the bench. Robinson also recorded three rebounds and a block. 2012-13 RMU Basketball NEC Champions: 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009, 2010

When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of theColonials. He owns an overall record of 45-27 (.625).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82. Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials toan overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped RobertMorris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tour-nament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despitefalling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to thequarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in thefirst round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983. Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff, Robert Morris owns an overallrecord of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league oppositionand have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 132 team or indi-vidual records, with 52 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting toplayer development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayetteto the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Head of the Class - Considered by many to be the heart and soul of the Colonials, redshirtsenior guard Velton Jones put forth arguably one of the best seasons in school history in2011-12. In addition to setting both single-season (207) and career records for free throws,Jones broke seven other junior class records. Included in that list are games started (36),points (591), field goals attempted (457), assists (167), free-throws attempted (270) andminutes played (1,096). Jones became the 20th member of the RMU 1,000-point club in2011-12 when he exploded for 35 points in an 81-73 victory @ Monmouth (1/21/12) and fin-ished the season with 1,259 career points. He enters Saturday’s game @ Xavier ranked 10thall-time at Robert Morris in scoring (1,297 points), just 32 points shy of moving into ninthplace.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones finished with 12 assists in RMU’s first two games of the 2012NIT Season Tip-Off against Lehigh and Fordham at the Petersen Events Center on the cam-pus of the University of Pittsburgh earlier this week, helping the redshirt senior guard be-come the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career dimes. Jones enters Saturday’sgame @ Xavier with 408 career assists and needs 148 to eclipse the career record of 555that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84). On the 2012-13 campaign, Jonesowns 15 assists through RMU’s first three games, an average of 5.0 per game.

Velton Jones a Lou Henson Award Candidate - Thanks to one of the best seasons in schoolhistory in 2011-12, redshirt senior guard Velton Jones was one of 31 student-athletes namedto the CollegeInsider.com 2012-13 Mid-Major Preseason All-America Team as well as a can-didate for the Lou Henson Award. Given annually to the top student-athlete from the mid-major ranks, the Lou Henson Award watch features three players from the NortheastConference. In addition to Jones, LIU Brooklyn’s Julian Boyd and Sacred Heart’s Shane Gib-son also made the cut. Jones ranks second among active players in the NEC in assists (408)and fourth in points (1,297).

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials postedan 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, convert-ing just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a completereversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Saturday’s game@ Xavier having shot 78 percent (64-for-82) at the chalk in its first three games of 2012-13, which ranks third in the Northeast Conference. Leading the way in the early going is anunlikely candidate in Mike McFadden. Last season, the junior forward shot just 52.2 percent(48-for-92) at the stripe, but an increased attention to detail in the offseason has allowedMcFadden to flourish this year. Through the first three games of 2012-13, McFadden hasconverted 10 of his 12 attempts, a success rate of 83.3 percent. Meanwhile, sophomore for-ward Lucky Jones has shot 81.3 percent (13-for-16) from the chalk.

A Run At the Record? Despite missing the first three games of the 2012-13 campaign due toa high ankle sprain, redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson entered his final season of el-igibility with a chance to become the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Johnson becamethe 16th member of the Robert Morris 500-rebound club in 2011-12 thanks to eight boardsin a 70-56 victory over in-state rival Saint Francis (Pa.) (2/11/12). He finished second for theColonials in 2011-12 with 177 rebounds in 31 games, an average of 5.7 per contest. Johnsonowns 565 career caroms and is 187 rebounds shy of becoming the program’s all-time leadingrebounder. Johnson needs to average 6.7 rebounds in RMU’s remaining 28 regular-seasoncontests to eclispe the mark. Currently, former Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) andTony Lee (2004-08) share the career record of 751 rebounds.

The Race to 1,000 - In addition to Russell Johnson having an opportunity in his final seasonof eligibility to make a run at becoming the program’s all-time leading rebounder, the red-shirt senior forward is also just 131 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000-point club.Johnson owns 869 career points and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player inschool history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs. WhileJohnson has a good shot of eclipsing 1,000 career points in 2012-13, Coron Williams alsohas a shot. The redshirt junior guard enters Saturday’s game @ Xavier with 657 career pointsand would need to average 12.3 points over the course of RMU’s remaining 28 games to jointhe exclusive fraternity. If the duo accomplish the feat, they would be the 21st and 22ndmembers, respectively, of the Robert Morris 1,000-point club in school history.

Economical MarginsThe defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last five sea-sons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest mar-gin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. TheColonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. SewallCenter to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie theleague mark. Robert Morris Quick FactsMr. Clean - One area that Robert Morris has gotten off to a great start on the 2012-13season is rebounding the basketball. Through the first three games of the year, the Colo-nials are averaging 39.7 rebounds per contest, which ranks second in the Northeast Con-ference. RMU has been extremely efficient on the offensive glass, pulling down anaverage of 14.7 boards per contest. Leading the way has been junior forward Mike Mc-Fadden, who is averaging 6.7 rebounds per contest. The Colonials have also received aspark from freshman forward Stephan Hawkins, who despite averaging just 15.7 min-utes per game is pulling down an average of 6.3 boards per contest.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting tothe free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 74-58 victoryover Fordham (11/13/12) in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones pacedRobert Morris with 18 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charitystripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (416) and free-throw at-tempts (584), it marked the 17th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least10 times in a game. Jones enters Saturday’s game @ Xavier leading the Colonials in bothfree throws (19) and free-throw attempts (24), a success rate of 79.2 percent.

Welcome To Robert Morris - Junior guard Karvel Anderson saw his first action as a Di-vision I student-athlete in RMU’s 2012-13 season opener @ Rider (11/9/12), and in 26minutes off the bench supplied the Colonials with a game-high 11 points. Anderson isthe second active Colonial on the roster to lead Robert Morris scoring in his first DivisionI game. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones scored a team-high 15 points for RMU in hisDivision I debut @ Syracuse (11/11/09) as part of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coachesvs. Through the first three games of the 2012-13 campaign, Anderson is supplying theColonials with a 10.7 points per game average after a career-high 16 points in a 74-58victory over Fordham (11/13/12) in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Double Your Pleasure - Junior forward Mike McFadden registered his first career dou-ble-double against Lehigh (11/12/12) in the opening round of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off, leading the Colonials with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. McFadden is thefourth active player on the Robert Morris roster to post a double-double. The currentactive leader in double-doubles for RMU is redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson, whoenters Saturday’s game @ Xavier with five career double-doubles.

Golden Era - While Robert Morris is in the midst of its golden era in the 37-year historyas a Division I program, an area that gets credit for that success is RMU’s ability to con-vert from beyond the arc. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams posted a team-high 87three-pointers in 2011-12, the second highest total in the RMU single-season recordbook. Former Colonial Scott Shepard (1988-91) owns the single-season mark with 93during his first year with RMU in 1988-89. In 2011-12, Williams became the third playerin the last four years to hit at least 80 three-pointers in a season and is also the eighthdifferent Colonial in the last 11 years to post one of the top 10 single-season marks inthree-point field goals. Williams enters Saturday’s game @ Xavier owns 142 career three-pointers, which currently ranks ninth all-time at Robert Morris.

The Comeback Kids - Facing a double-digit deficit under head coach Andrew Tooledoesn’t seem to be a problem for Robert Morris. In seven of their last 11 road tilts of the2011-12 season the Colonials fell behind by double digits but came back to win four ofthem. In a 67-60 win @ Indiana State (3/13/12) in the first round of the 2012 CIT, RMUfell behind by 12 in the first half, 21-9, and faced double-digit deficits seven times in thefirst eight minutes of the second half before roaring back for the victory. The win @ In-diana State marked the ninth time RMU has climbed out of a double-digit deficit to earna victory in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole. Included in that stretch is a15-point deficit in the second half of an 81-73 overtime win @ Monmouth (1/21/12).

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting as-signments. Williams has started 45 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 con-secutive games before having it snapped last season.

When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign forRobert Morris. The Colonials enter Saturday’s game @ Xavier with a record of 23-7 (.767)over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win per-centage among active players on the RMU roster. Right behind Williams is Lucky Jones,as Robert Morris owns a record of 10-4 (.714) when the sophomore forward reaches dou-ble figures.

In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 55-53 win @ Sacred Heart (2/23/12), redshirt senior guard Velton Jones buried athree-pointer with 0.1 seconds to play that helped give the Colonials the victory. Itmarked the second career buzzer beater for Jones, who also turned the trick in the semi-finals of the 2011 NEC Tournament in a 64-62 victory @ Quinnipiac (3/6/11). The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four sea-sons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning thelongest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 107 straight contests for RMUdating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 101 career starts, far and away the high-est mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least100 career games, and he needs 20 starting assignments to break the school record of120 that is held by former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketballprogram over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 74-58 victory over Ford-ham (11/13/12) in the NIT Season Tip-Off, Robert Morris owns a record to 90-17 (.841)since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 39-10 (.796)when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his seocndseason as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in2011-12. In Toole’s 72 games on the sidelines over the last two seasons, RMU has held itsopponents to 70 points or less in 49 contests, an amazing 68.1 percent of the time. In-cluded in those 49 contests are 23 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with RMUowning an astounding mark of 22-1 (.957) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 58-53 set-back @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 21 straight when turningthe trick.

Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for RobertMorris over the last six seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Sincethe beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 91-16 (.850)when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including an 87-14 (.861)mark when outrebounding their opponent. The Charles L. Sewall Center

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for ThreeOver the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris havebecome synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still nearthe top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals madeper game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.07 three-pointers per contest, which ranks second behind St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.09three-pointers a game. In 2011-12, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced RobertMorris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highest total in the RMU single-seasonrecord book.
