“Treat the Earth the Way You Want to be Treated”

Advisors: Rhonda Stevens and Amy Cunningham

Summary of the ProjectWe have done numerous activities this year to help

our environment, educate students at our school, and reach our community to complete our project. We have had a very successful recycling program, we have taught many students this year at R.E.L about recycling and conserving energy, and we have accomplished meaningful outreach to our community through these activities.

The RapOur Energy Team came up with a rap about recycling. The kids at our school enjoyed a fun way to learn to recycle.

Activity #1

Energy Team RapRaindrop, drop top,

Energy Team is the spot spot,

Picking up trash on the lot lot,

Being a litter bug is a not not,

We went from nothing to something,

We went from liking to loving (OUR WORLD),

We took the tin cans and bottles,

We turned them in, and we did recycle!

Activity #1

Face Painting at the Fall FestivalAt the Fall Festival, we painted children’s faces. While the other kids were waiting to get their faces painted, we provided recycling themed activity sheets.

Activity #2

Recycling In The MorningEvery day two members of the Energy Team visit every classroom in our school to collect the recyclables from the recycling bins. Then they take the recycling out to the curbside recycling bins where the Public Works Department picks it up.

Activity #3

Problem and SolutionPresenting to the Lions

At one point in the year, we realized that when we did the morning recycling, there were things in the bins that should not be there. We went to each grade level in our school and presented a slideshow. We used the slideshow to educate students at REL about what SHOULD and SHOULD NOT be placed in the recycling bins.

Activity #4

Christmas ParadeThis year our team built a Christmas float for our town's Christmas parade. We made the Christmas float from recycled materials. Our float won first place in its category!

The Energy Team meets up for the Christmas Parade.

Activity #5

Stuffing Bean Bag Chairs

Since our teacher’s bean bags have been losing their fluff, we recycled the shredded paper from the office to re-fluff them.

Mason (Left), Beau (Middle), and Hyatt (Right) re-fluff the bean bags.

Activity #6

We made a weather balloon and launched a payload with a banana, a deflated balloon, and Leo the Lion on it. It went over 100,000 feet above the tropopause.

Activity #7

Painting For TUA Our local electric company, Tullahoma Utilities Authority, reached out to us with a project. They asked if we could paint murals to hang on the fence of one of the main sub stations in town. We took this opportunity to reach our community with the message: “Treat the world they way you want to be treated!”

Activity #8

Bottle Battle

Students save their bottles throughout the year and bring them in the week of the Bottle Battle competition. We have a grade level competition to see who can bring in the most bottles. The grade level with the most participation wins a popsicle party!
