Robbers – The 1975

I have chosen to explore this music video for a number of reasons:

• “Robbers” explores a storyline rather than band shots and I want to take inspiration for the storyline in my project from this video.

• It is the same genre of my piece.• It’s made by the actual “The 1975” band, the artist’s of the song in my

piece.• It explores a relationship between a couple.

One thing I have noticed in this genre of music video, especially The 1975’s videos, there is a lot of kissing going on in the narrative sections. One of the main themes of Indie-Rock music is sex as most of the songs involved in this genre, so the kissing in the videos shows off that sexual nature of the video without being too explicit.

It presents to the audience a “cute” relationship and invites the audience in, almost wanting to be a part of what the couple have, while still sticking to the indie-rock genre through the use of Mise-en-Scene.

The Mise-en-Scene of the video is very dark and musky. This is through location and costume. The costume is all very dark or white. This helps establish the genre to the audience while keeping to the conventions of an indie-rock music video.

The locations used in this video all seem very exotic and foreign, and seem a bit dangerous. Somewhere you’re parents wouldn’t let you go, as the audience are teenagers to young adults. It makes teens want to rebel and go to these locations and be like ”The 1975” and have a relationship like seen in the video.

SummaryOverall I have taken a lot of inspiration from this real existing media

product to apply to my own project of “Girls” by The 1975. Some ideas I have been inspired by from this video is the:

. Costume. Location

. Relationship Narrative
