    Esther Gloor grew up in the German speaking part of Northern Switzerland and moved to Basel for heruniversity studies in 2007. She has been involved with Road Scholar since 2008, accompanying variousprograms across Switzerland and lecturing primarily on the Swiss Alps. She finished her studies in geographyand history (Master of Arts) at the University of Basel in 2011. Presently, she is pursuing her doctorate in thefield of urban planning at the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel. Esther hasmany interests and hobbies, but she is most passionate about experiencing different cultures through travel.

    Train or bus availability: Train from all major cities in Austria and abroad. Trains and public buses allover Switzerland on an (usually) hourly schedule. Train schedules onwww.sbb.ch. 10-minute walk from the train station to the hotel.

    To Start of Program Location: Murten Transportation to site: Take the direct train from the airport to Bern or to Neuchatel. There, change to

    the local train to Murten. It takes approx. two hours and costs CHF 60. From thetrain station to the hotel you can take a taxi for around CHF 10, or it is an easy10-minute walk.

    well preserved old town takes you back in time to the 16th century. This guided visit willbe by bus and on foot, followed by some free time.

    Lunch: Explore local fare on your own. Afternoon: A beautiful journey to Thun, through the lush Simmental (Simme valley) and over an

    Alpine pass through dramatic mountain scenery to the Fribourg area. Dinner: Tonight enjoy fondue or raclette in Gruyeres.

    Day 6: Brnig Pass / Lucerne / Walensee (Sunday, June 24)

    Jungfrau) as we travel along Lake Thun to Interlaken. Next, we drive along Lake Brienz,over the Brnig Pass and along Lake Lucerne while taking in a lecture on the way,entitled "The Alps - Nature, History and Challenges."

    Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon: Field trip to Lucerne with a guided visit of the old town. Transfer to Hotel Seehof in

  • the Limmat River. A guided visit by bus and on foot, will bring us to see the stained glasswindows by Marc Chagall and the Swiss National Museum with art treasures andhistorically important pieces from all over the country.

    Lunch: Explore local fare on your own. Afternoon: A few hours of free time in Zurich. Drive back to the hotel in Walenstadt. Dinner: Farewell Dinner in the hotel dining room. Evening: Cultural event.

    Day 9: Transfer through the Alps to Innsbruck, Austria (Wednesday, June 27)

    Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room. Morning: A spectacular drive to Davos, over Fluela-Pass and along the Inn-River down the Engadin

    Valley to Innsbruck. Lunch: Lunch at a restaurant in Scuol in the Lower Engadin Valley. Afternoon: Arrival in Innsbruck, capital of the Austrian federal State Tyrol. Settle in at our hotel, and

    take some time to rest. In the late afternoon, we have an introduction to Innsbruck, athriving Alpine city. For nearly a millennium, Innsbruck has been an extremely importantcenter of commerce. Its strategic location at the junction of two major Alpine routes firstassured this status. Later, the Hapsburgs transformed the town into a booming culturaland economic center which still thrives today. Innsbruck has been able to combine thisrich cultural legacy with modern functional architecture (Zaha Hadid, Dominique Perrault)and has created a city atmosphere and life style that make visiting a pleasure! Excursionthrough the inner city along the most important landmarks, such as The Golden Roof andthe Baroque Helbling House, outstanding examples of bourgeois grandeur in the OldTown right around the corner of the hotel.

    Day 10: The Baroque Old Town of Innsbruck / Bergisel Ski Jump (Thursday, June 28)

    Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room. Morning: You will visit the Hofkirche (Court Chapel) with the Cenotaph of Habsburg Emperor

    Maximilian, the most impressive imperial monument. Then the bus will take you to theWilten Basilica, one of the most splendid churches in the Tyrol in Baroque and Rococostyle, and to Ambras Castle, located above Innsbruck. Its cultural and historicalsignificance is inseparably linked with the personality of Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-1595), a true "Renaissance prince" who was an enthusiastic patron of the arts andsciences. From Baroque and Renaissance, you move right to modern as you visit theBergisel Ski Jump designed by architect Zaha Hadid.

    Lunch: Let's have lunch up in the jump tower! Afternoon: This afternoon you have free time to explore the town on your own and to enjoy the

    Day 11: Great Contemporary Architecture set in Splendid Nature

    Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room. Morning: A morning lecture on "Ambitious Tyrolean Contemporary Architecture." Over the last

    decade, Innsbruck has been continuously changing, practically transforming itself. Anarchitect will introduce you to the modern face of the city created by internationallyrenowned architects such as Zaha Hadid and Dominique Perrault. After this introductionyou will take the Hungerburg cable car up to a height of 860 m (2800 feet). The fourstations are designed by Zaha Hadid.

    Lunch: Close to the upper station of the cable car with a great view of Innsbruck. Afternoon: This afternoon you will leave the town and visit nearby tztal with its lush green meadows

    and mighty rocks, clear waters and eternal ice. Embedded in this great nature are thevillages of Slden, tz and Lngenfeld, all part of the renowned tztal ski area and lovelysummer resorts. Here you'll find one of the most stunning examples of contemporaryarchitecture - the Aqua Dome and outdoor spa. Take an optional excursion by cable carup to a tztal mountain top with modern panorama platform of contemporary architecture.

    Valley to the Krimmler cascades, a marvelous Alpine region. Lunch: Lunch en route to Salzburg. Afternoon: Arrive at the hotel, time to settle in. Introduction lecture on Salzburg. Salzburg's Old

    Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, represents one of the best examplesof Baroque town planning anywhere in Europe. Nestled among stunning mountainlandscapes, Salzburg is an homage to both Baroque architecture and Mozart, its famousson. Church spires, palaces and concert halls, narrow cobbled streets, passages andspacious squares, small shops and historic restaurants and caf's such as famousTomaselli and Kaffee Frst - together they create a very romantic ensemble. We take astroll through the Old Town.

Afterwards we continue with a walk through the Old Town followed by aprivate appointment with a Mozarteum Professor in his town house for an animated musiclecture accompanied by a master class student.

A lover of Italian art and culture,Markus Sittikus commissioned the famous Cathedral architect, Santino Solari, to design a"villa suburbana" to match the elegance and spaciousness of Italian architecture. Hecreated a beautiful Renaissance building - the Lustschloss ("pleasure palace") ofHellbrunn with spacious park and unique trick fountains.

    Lunch: Lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon: We return to the hotel for the afternoon - free time to relax and prepare luggage. Dinner: A very special Farewell Dinner honoring the music of Mozart: Mozart Dinner Concert in
