INTRODUCTION
• The global annual cost of RTA is almost 230 billion dollars.
• 850,000 deaths occur in those who are under 45 years of age and are the sole
bread-winners for their families.
• Every tenth bed in the hospital is occupied by an accident victim.
• Trauma related death occurs in India every 1.9 minutes.
• Although India has only 1% of the world’s motor vehicles, it accounts for 6% of
the total global RTA deaths.3

• 2-lane undivided road with unpaved shoulders of width less than 1m.
• level terrain without any undulations throughout the road.
• Two curves one is major i.e almost 900 curve and other is a minor curve.
• One Fly- Over at one end.
• Along the stretch few intersections with village roads.

• Mixed traffic with more of two wheelers during day time and more commercial
vehicles during night time.
• Huge number of slow moving, multi-axle vehicles are found because theycarry import and export goods from Kakinada sea port.
• Many multi-axle vehicles carry huge rocks, oil tanks, iron ore and fertilizers.

MITIGATION MEASURES
Education Measures
• Banners and hoardings indicating safety measures should be installed at right
place
• Education of employees in the industries.
• Correctly used seat-belts reduce the risk of death in a crash by 61%
• Helmets reduce fatal and serious head injuries by up to 45% (WHO Fact Files)

Enforcement Measures
• At night time regular police patrolling should be done to stop activates like
racing.
• Police should conduct regular check for drink and drive and impose serious
punishment on people who are violating it.
• Commercial vehicles should be checked.
• Regular check for fitness of vehicles like autos and other private buses.
• Proper Driving licence should be checked.
• Speed limit check.
• Liquor shops beside the road should be avoided.
