Page 1 of 8 Inspection of Kumarhatti-Nahan Road (SH-2) on 21 & 22 January, 2014 1. Traveling on road between Kumarhatti and Nahan gives a feel of good road to road users. Travel time has reduced. (Road Safety ) Inspection on Kumarhatti-Nahan Road (SH-2) was carried out from safety point of view only. The review was aimed to identify potential hazards on this newly improved road, which is likely to be completed shortly. The following are submissions: 2. Lane and shoulder widths are adequate as traffic is not much on straight alignments but number of sharp curves seems to be more. 3. Run off the road will be reduced as whole length have parapet and w-beams at critical sections. Some locations may still require parapet in the completed road sections. 4. Average speed of 40-50 Km/hr will be safe on straight alignments. But speed more than 25-30 Km/hr may be too high for road at a number of sharp curves. The safe navigation of horizontal curves compound with inclement weather or night driving may be an issue for safety improvements at some prime sites. 5. Severe curve realignment needed as accident could be imminent for higher speed at some locations. Vehicles could have side sweep. Light Motor Vehicles like; Loaded Utility, Bolero, Scoprio etc may have problem at such sharp curves. The tyres on inner side of curves will experience more pressure and more wearing even at a speed of about 40-50 km/hr. 6. There is inadequate sight distance on a few horizontal curves (hillside). Curve warning missing or not visible or ineffective on some severe curves. Similarly, chevrons missing or ineffective on such curves, which can lead to more accident risk. 7. Pre-warning interventions before sharp curves with poor visibility is required. Delineation is an important safety factor in any condition including night visibility. Retro-reflective material needed to be used for night visibility on delineators, the material used is of low reflectivity on square guide posts in white and balck colour. 8. Signs and marking are required to be placed at logical locations and easy to understand and visible. Hazard markers have been placed at illogical locations at a number of locations. 9. Start of road from Kumarhatti faces problem of on road parking of vehicles /buses and pedestrian conflict. 10. Small stretch of road near Johadji may need more road safety intervention. 11. Majority of dumping sites alongside of road yet to be re-developed as per EMPs

    Inspection of Kumarhatti-Nahan Road (SH-2) on 21 & 22 January, 2014

The following are submissions:

    2. Lane and shoulder widths are adequate as traffic is not much on straight alignments but

number of sharp curves seems to be more.
