Washpool Road- Allen Rd Intersection

The DHV for Washpool Road is 881 vehicles. The direction of travel for these vehicles was assumed to be 50:50 as each route will give a similar travel time to the centre of town or to the Bruce highway.

Therefore the number of vehicles travelling into the intersection of Washpool-Allen Road will be 440 vehicles. The vast majority of the vehicles will be turning left onto Allen Road from Washpool Road. Allen Road is a dirt road when travelling south from Washpool Road. No developments are planned for the near future and therefore the expectation of traffic being serviced through this route is minimal at this point in time. The design life of 30 years could impact the future development and use of this road therefore future development was considered in the intersection design.

Entering from Washpool Road:

Traffic turning left onto Allen Rd = 99% of 440 vehicles = 436 vehicles

Traffic turning right onto Allen Rd = 1% of 440 vehicles = 4 vehicles

Entering from Allen Rd (North):

Traffic turning right into Washpool Rd = 99% of 440 vehicles = 436 vehicles

Traffic continuing onto Allen Rd = 1% of 440 vehicles = 4 vehicles

Lucas St- Allen Rd Intersection

Washpool Road and Lucas Street are parallel streets that have similar designs. Currently Lucas Street is more developed than Washpool Rd, however the traffic volume would be expected to be similar. From the traffic data from Lucas- Johnson Rd, the 2014 data showed that 1070 vehicles passed this intersection over a 12hr period. It is assumed that the current traffic travelling along Lucas Street is due in part because of Washpool Road being incomplete. Without further data it was assumed that the AADT was the same as the vehicle movements as the proposed development of Washpool Road would create.

Thus an AADT = 6703

DHV: 6703 x 0.12 = 804

The directional movement factor was taken as 50/50 again so this meant that 402 vehicle would be entering the intersection of Lucas St and Allen Road. Traffic flow described as follows:

Page 2: Road Design

Entering from Lucas Street:

Traffic turning left onto Allen Rd = 90% of 402 vehicles = 362 vehicles

Traffic turning right onto Allen Rd = 10% of 402 vehicles = 40 vehicles

Entering from Allen Rd (North):

Traffic turning right into Lucas St = 90% of 402 vehicles = 362 vehicles

Traffic continuing onto Allen Rd = 10% of 402 vehicles = 40 vehicles

Plus traffic heading to Washpool Rd = 436 vehicles

Entering from Allen Rd (South):

Traffic turning left into Lucas St = 10% of 436 vehicles = 44 vehicles

Traffic continuing onto Allen Rd = 90% of 436 vehicles = 392 vehicles
