A COMMUNITY WEARS ITS SUPPORT OF THE RMSC ON ITS SLEEVE! While visitors were unable to come to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC), many chose to wear their support for the RMSC on their sleeve. With the help of Crazy Dog T-Shirts and Initial Here Creative Services, two local small businesses, the RMSC created limited-edition t-shirt designs to help raise funds for the Museum, Strasenburgh Planetarium, and Cumming Nature Center. Though the initial goal was to raise $5,000, the fundraiser sold approximately 1,400 shirts and raised nearly $20,000, which was donated directly to the RMSC to help support general operating costs. “It was heartwarming to see the amount of support we received during this time of uncertainty,” said Ryan Elizabeth Shear, Capital Campaign Director at the RMSC and lead coordinator for the fundraiser. “It enabled us to continue bringing STEM into homes while our doors were closed, and ensured that when we reopened, the guest experience would be more inspiring than ever.” T.C. Pellett, owner of Initial Here Creative Services, created three t-shirt designs - one for each entity of the RMSC. “I Need Fresh Air” displays the swaying pines at the Cumming Nature Center, “I Need to Explore” dons the Museum’s beloved mastodon, and “I Need Space” pays homage to the spectacular Strasenburgh Planetarium. The team at Crazy Dog T-Shirts provided their warehouse and digital services to sell, create, and distribute the final products. “This campaign started with a great idea in support of a fantastic cultural nonprofit. It grew from a kinetic collaboration, and it worked because we kept it fun and simple. That’s what it means to be nimble as only a small business can,” said Pellett. “It was a no brainer for me to get involved.” While the RMSC was closed, the institution was not able to receive the vital admission, ticket, and event revenue on which it depends. Being a nonprofit organization, fundraising and donations were imperative to the continuation of the RMSC’s engagement with the community, both while the institution was closed and once it was able to reopen. Peter Borrelli, operations manager at Crazy Dog T-Shirts, recognized the need and was ready to hop into action. “As long-time donors and community partners, we were honored to partner with the RMSC on this important project. We have shared so many wonderful moments together, from sipping syrup at the Cumming Nature Center sugar shack, to After Dark events, and everything else in between,” said Borrelli. “We’ve heard a lot about what is ‘essential’ lately, but there’s no question that RMSC is absolutely vital for our continued growth as a community.” We are so thankful to everyone who participated. This proves, once again, that you cannot quarantine curiosity. We look forward to seeing photos of supporters wearing their support for the RMSC using #curiosiT4RMSC. Transcript of RMSC Connections

CELEBRATING THE CHANGEMAKERSIn 1999, the City of Rochester and the RMSC excavated the 1873 Time Capsule from the cornerstone of the Old City Hall building (now Irving Place on Broad Street). Despite containing dozens of business cards, advertisements, by-laws of fraternal organizations, pamphlets, currency, and even a condom made of animal intestine, the time capsule held only two documents related to the women’s rights movement. As we approach the national woman suffrage centennial, this underrepresentation of women’s history is a reflection on the stories and accomplishments that have been muted, forgotten, and otherwise lost to the historic record.

The time capsule was created the year after Susan B. Anthony and 14 other women illegally cast their votes in the 1872 Presidential election. One time capsule document lists the names of Rochester’s Eighth Ward election inspectors and the women they allowed to register and vote on November 7, 1872. It states that the inspectors “decided honestly in accordance with the 14th Amendment of the Constitution that women are persons therefor[e] citizens and being citizens entitled to the rights of citizens.” The other related document is the “Constitution and Memorials of the Tax-Paying Women Association of the City of Rochester & County of Monroe, NY,” a group established by the women voters and their friends in protest of taxation without representation.

The women listed in the document pictured are only a fraction of the many involved in the women’s suffrage movement. Their demographics demonstrate variation in age, class, and marital status, but what about racial and sexual diversity? Official histories are usually representative of the perspectives of those in power rather than well-rounded accounts of the past from multiple points of view. Museums are making a conscious effort to address these shortcomings in our representation of the past and the way it frames our understanding and expectations of the present and future.

In our society where gender-based inequities are rampant, and these issues disproportionately affect women of color, it is important to remember that the struggle for women’s rights is not just about white women, or wealthy women, or heterosexual women. A new community-curated exhibition at the RMSC will provide unprecedented access to inclusive stories of regional women change-makers. Opening Fall 2020, The Changemakers: Rochester Women Who Changed The World will tell the untold historic and contemporary stories of women from all backgrounds that inspire and empower you to create a better society.

The women listed are Susan B. Anthony, Mary S. Hebard, Mary S. Anthony, Guelma Anthony McLean, Hannah M. Chatfield, Rhoda DeGarmo, Margaret Garrigues Leyden, Jane M. Cogswell, Charlotte Bowles Anthony, Susan M. Hough, Ellen S. Baker, Mary E. Pulver, Hannah Anthony Mosher, and Sarah Cole Truesdale. Nancy M. Chapman is missing from this document but did vote according to other sources.

OUR WONDERFUL RMSC COUNCIL! If you’ve ever been to Fantastic Findings or the Holiday Bazaar, you’ve been to events hosted by our dedicated RMSC Council. The Council donates money to the museum every December by raising funds tirelessly throughout the year for the organization. Most recently, their Beautiful Blooms sale raised $13,000. The RMSC wants to thank them for everything they do!

RMSC Connections

DEAR FRIENDS, I hope you and your families are safe and well. Living through the pandemic has not been easy for any of us. The RMSC has been closedsince March 13th and we can’t wait to open safely. During the closure, our staff members diligently stayed busy making modifications to our facilities, caring for our collections, developing new exhibits, and creating fun science content to spark curiosity even from a distance.

I’m thrilled to announce that the Rochester Museum & Science Center, Strasenburgh Planetarium, and Cumming Nature Center are finally open! We will have new rules that you’ve probably been encountering everywhere - guests and staff will be required to wear face coverings while indoors, groups will be asked to remain apart from each other, and we’ve installed even more sanitizer stations throughout the buildings. We’re confident in our ability to offer you a safe, fun, educational experience for our visitors - there’s so much to see and do!

Hillary Olson, President & CEO

REMEMBERING BANI MITTRA

Bani Mittra was a selfless and dedicated educator of children for the whole of her career. When she passed, her husband Sid, son Ajit, and daughter Rita, as well as the extended family, honored her by creating the Mittra Family Foundation, which makes donations to non-profits around the world. Each year, each member of the Mittra family selects a charity of their choice for their portion of the donation. In 2020, the family decided to select common charities that embodied the goal of supporting children with STEM education. Although Bani Mittra was not from Rochester, NY, her daughter Rita’s family lived here for many years, and she told the extended family about the wonderful STEM related programs that the RMSC offers. In fact, Rita’s children benefited from visiting this organization and participating in summer camps many times over the years. The family voted and the RMSC Transportation and Admissions Fund was selected as it offered the opportunity for the most people to enjoy all that the RMSC has to offer.

The RMSC Transportation and Admissions Fund provides scholarship opportunities for school groups, enabling students from throughout our region, many of whom would not otherwise be able to take advantage of the powerful and engaging learning experiences and resources that the RMSC offers, to visit the RMSC and Cumming Nature Center free of charge. The RMSC is grateful for the Mittra Family Foundation’s support of this fund, as well as their support of our team as we work through ensuring school group experiences remain available, whether or not students are able to travel to the RMSC.

All of us at the Rochester Museum & Science Center believe in being good stewards of the earth we call home. Because of this, the RMSC is moving to an electronic newsletter that will be emailed out to all of you! If you have received a printed version of Connections, then we do not have your email on file. To help us reduce our impact on the planet and save on printing costs that we can put towards our educational programs, please send an email to [email protected] and let us know that you would like an electronic version!

The RMSC welcomed 500 guests to the sold-out, sixth annual RMSC Uncorked & On Tap fundraising event, presented by VincentAssociates on Saturday, March 7. This year’s event featured more than 45 local and regional craft beer, wine, spirit, and food vendors throughout the Museum. Guests also enjoyed live music, interactive science experiments, and had the opportunity to attend educational seminars exploring the science of food and drinks, mixology, viticulture, brewing, and distilling.

The event was an incredible success raising nearly $46,000 to support the RMSC’s impactful programs that allow the Museum to provide unforgettable experiences that inspire lifelong interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

A COMMUNITY WEARS ITS SUPPORT OF THE RMSC ON ITS SLEEVE!While visitors were unable to come to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC), many chose to wear their support for the RMSC on their sleeve. With the help of Crazy Dog T-Shirts and Initial Here Creative Services, two localsmall businesses, the RMSC created limited-edition t-shirt designs to help raise funds for the Museum, Strasenburgh Planetarium, and Cumming Nature Center.

“It enabled us to continue bringing STEM into homes while our doors were closed, and ensured that when we reopened, the guest experience would be more inspiring than ever.”

“We’ve heard a lot about what is ‘essential’ lately, but there’s no question that RMSC is absolutely vital for our continued growth as a community.”

We are so thankful to everyone who participated. This proves, once again, that you cannot quarantine curiosity. We look forward to seeing photos of supporters wearing their support for the RMSC using #curiosiT4RMSC.

“It enabled us to continue bringing STEM into homes while our doors were closed, and ensured that when we reopened, the guest experience would be more inspiring than ever.”
