From The RMCA Board of Directors:

In the one year since the restructuring of the Rocky Mount Center of the Arts (RMCA) began, I have witnessed our mission and goals clarified, our Board of Directors expanded, a focus on developing meaningful arts-related opportunities for the community developed, the participationin art classes increase, and the community’sawareness of our presence improved.

RMCA has had to address many significant challenges during this year of transition: to formalize its status as a non-profit organization, to obtain an Executive Director and enlist a Board of Directors from the community that actively supports promotion of the arts and arts education, to develop a core of educational programs, and to begin a process of overcoming significant financial obstacles.

Our progress has been good, but we continue to need a larger base of community members to join us in

promotion of the arts and arts education in our community; to collaborate with us to create a sustainable gallery for artists to showcase a variety of visual artwork; to promote and support the use of our studio spaces for local artists; and in supporting our mission and programs through financialgifts.

We are a grass roots enterprise, but we have confidence that our community is realizing, like many small communities around the country, that support of the visual arts, arts education offered to the public, and providing a central space to highlight the creative endeavors of local artists have a positive and lasting impact onthe quality of life of the community and its citizens.

We encourage you to join with us in support of the visual arts in Rocky Mount and Franklin County by participating in ourexpanding listing of art classes, by volunteering your time to RMCA operations, and by providing your financial

gifts to support our activities, designed to help citizens of all ages discover a creative and beautiful way of seeing the world around them.

Why Art Matters

When we talk about the importance of Art in our culture we tend to gloss over the question, and talk about the need for beauty to enrich our quality of life. However, when the question is much more direct, and we areasked to show how important Art is to our community, often our answers are quietly hidden in the budgets of our public schools –and then forgotten about until the programs are on the chopping block.

As we approach the 15th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center, I would like to reflect on one of the most powerful and recognized pieces of modern public Art that arose from that tragedy, and ask what it tells us about the purpose and importance of Art to our community.

Tribute in Light is a public artwork installed six months after the collapse of the

WTC. Several artists, architects, and lightingspecialists working with The Municipal Art Society arranged 88 xenon spotlights in two 48-foot squares pointed to the sky. This produced two beams of light that reached up to 4 miles into the sky and could be seen nearly 60 miles away. Tribute initially ran every day in 2002, and has been re-lit on every September 11th since.

Tribute in Light is a simple piece – two blue columns of light drawn in the sky. It is asimple representation of the two towers that stood nearby. However, its ghostly, intangible form leaves us with an afterimage of what was there, and gives us nothing more. It does not tell a story. It does not givecomfort. It does not give hope. It is a stark reminder of what was, and we are left to reflect on the loss of life and the impermanent nature of the world around us.

And yet, Tribute in Light became a

beacon of hope. It became an icon that rallied the nation. And, it now tells the story of a wounded city and the strength and resolve of its people to never forget the sacrifices made for the ideals we hold most dear. Tribute accomplished this by bringing people together.

This is the purpose of Art - to connect people together. The artwork does not do thisfor us, but asks us to participate, to share ourstory, to consider what is most important, to rally around a common cause, to remember what is gone, and to give ourselves permission to heal.

This light installation would not be considered 'good' or beautiful. It is too stark and mournful to be either. Yet, it succeeds byreminding us what is important – the people around us and the connections we share.

Tribute is an urban artwork that shares anurban story, however the need for Art is not confined to the urban areas. Art is important for every community, because the need to connect and relate to others is important in every community.

Everyone should find a way to show howimportant it is to have the Arts in their community. Consider supporting The RockyMount Center for the Arts today, so together, we can write the stories for our own tribute.
