Annual Report to Donors to the Riverview College Foundation 2015
As I pen a few words for this Foundation Report, my mind turns this year to another Foundation. We have recently celebrated the 150th anniversary of the arrival in Australia in 1856 of Fr Joseph Dalton SJ, the founder of three of our Jesuit schools – Xavier College (1878), St Aloysius’ College (1979) and our own St Ignatius’ College (1880).
We can easily forget the challenge he took up. Dalton crossed the globe aged fifty (more than the life expectancy of a male in Ireland then). He arrived in Melbourne with two other Jesuit priests and two brothers. But during the first year there, one of the brothers left to marry. The other just plain disappeared. He lost forty per cent of his workforce, his team, in one year! Did that stop him? Or his age? Of course not. He immediately took over a decrepit and moribund Cathedral school in Melbourne, St Patrick’s, and soon
turned it around. Its enrolment, its spirit, its outcomes, all soared. Then he tackled the foundation of those three big schools (to say nothing of a number of smaller parish schools). All in a three-year time frame. And what a legacy.
If we find ourselves in the position to be able to look to the horizons, to build on our heritage and secure the future, it is, as they say, because we stand on the shoulders of giants. People like Joseph Dalton and so many others along the way – most unknown to us – who have embraced a vision and put their time, their talent and their treasure into realising it.
This Annual Report will record the achievements of the year. A document which acknowledges large-heartedness and generosity of spirit. It also reveals what our benefactors are passionate
about: bursaries to open up our Riverview family to those who would never have dreamt it possible, an act of distributive justice; and the best of buildings and facilities to ensure that the young men formed here are best prepared to live their lives to the fullest, especially in the service of the least of their brothers and sisters.
Ignatius used to say to his patrons that the Colleges they supported “were more yours than ours”. That is to say, he really believed his benefactors joined him in ministry. A partnership. The same is true today.
God bless you for your goodness,
FR ROSS JONES, SJ CHAIRMAN, RIVERVIEW COLLEGE FOUNDATION
This edition of the Annual Report comes at a time of great economic challenge and uncertainty for the world at large. For these reasons, it gives me great pleasure and pride to be able to salute the generosity of the many Old Boys, parents, staff and friends who contribute so significantly to Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview. Since joining Riverview and taking up the post of Director – Advancement in 2015, I have met many of those involved with the College’s philanthropic development and been struck by their commitment to teaching and learning, care for the students, and the future of the institution.
Cova Cottage will be a focus of celebration later this year as we acknowledge and recognise the Companions of the Foundation. Since 1880, generous benefaction has been intrinsically linked with the progression of the College. The Companions are leaders within the Riverview community whose significant contributions have left an indelible imprint on the College. One of our donor community to be honoured will be Paul Ramsay AO (OR53), who will be inducted as a Companion posthumously. A generous supporter of the College during his lifetime, Paul
bequeathed $1million to the College following his sudden and unexpected death in 2014.
Paul’s bequest, and the generosity of the many donors who share our vision, is tremendously heartening and humbling. The pages in this Report, which celebrates acts of generosity and courage by our benefactors and recipients alike, is a reminder of Riverview’s position as one of the oldest and most prestigious school’s in Australia.
The physical infrastructure of the College is in the process of being renewed and renovated – and this is of the greatest importance for the wellbeing of the institution. Few schools can claim a sense of place as strong as Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview. While the campus continues to evolve, it sustains a timeless connection to the river, local community and our unique history. Today, we are preparing for the future with thoughtful campus planning that enhances the landscape of learning that is so central to the Riverview experience. Nevertheless, buildings are nothing without the students. That’s why we are proud to be able to offer funding for bursaries that have supported more than 280 students since 2000, regardless of
their socio-economic, geographic or cultural background. The bursary program ensures that Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview is a viable option for the very best students, those with the potential to make lasting contributions to the Riverview community and to society as a whole. The diversity of our students plays a role in keeping Riverview vital, exposing our boys to varied perspectives and preparing them for the complexities of the wider world. We are extremely fortunate to have a core of supportive Old Boys and friends who make this possible.
In 2015 1,379 donors helped us raised close to $2million. Many of you have already indicated that you will have the faith and altruism to continue to support us. So with your help and through a realistic and innovative approach to both fundraising and investment, I believe the College will be positioned to build on the strengths of the past to continue to deliver excellence in education and care within the social, educational, economic and cultural climate of the contemporary world.
On behalf of all those who have benefited and will benefit from the gifts detailed in this Report, I offer my sincere thanks.

In a world with increasing income and wealth disparity, I firmly believe that education is a great social equaliser and the most effective way to break the poverty cycle.
Through years of involvement in education, I have supported many underprivileged students who have made significant achievements and contributions later in life. Best of all, most of these students have a strong commitment to service and to giving back to society.

Riverview has been an experience I am most grateful for as I’ve learnt many things that have given me the ability to go further in life. The friendships I have formed are bonds that I know will extend beyond the boundaries of the gates. My relationship with God has grown as I’ve been blessed with such an amazing opportunity. Now I’m at the end of my time at the College, but I will always belong to this place.

The experience of Riverview has transformed me into a ‘Man for Others’, and I will strive to fulfil the motto ‘As much as you can do, so much dare to do’ at all times. Thank you, and I hope to one day be supporting other young men with the same opportunity that was given to me.

We have a strong belief in education, most particularly for the less than privileged youth....and we have a strong belief in the Jesuits and the philosophies and practices of Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview.
My wife and I are very fortunate and also privileged to be able to
assist and support these endeavours.

I threw myself into all the diverse experiences that this magnificent institution has to offer, and I loved it. Yet the appreciation that I have for this opportunity, this education, did not stop there. It is not a memory, a discrete, self-contained period within my life. It is an experience and an opportunity that gains colour, and depth, and meaning, with time. Every day I sincerely gain a greater appreciation of the profound and loving gift bestowed upon me by this Jesuit education.
