Historic Moments: Why the Rotary year begins 1 July

By Susan Hanf and Jason Lamb Rotary International News -- 8 July 2011

Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins 1 July? The international convention initially played a key role in determining the start date of our fiscal and administrative year. Rotarys first fiscal year began the day after the first convention ended, on 18 August 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year also related to the convention, beginning with the first day of the 1911 convention on 21 August. At its August 1912 meeting, the Board of Directors ordered an audit of the International Association of Rotary Clubs finances. The auditors recommended that the organization end its fiscal year on 30 June to give the secretary and treasurer time to prepare a financial statement for the convention and board, and determine the proper number of club delegates to the convention. The executive committee concurred, and at its April 1913 meeting, designated 30 June as the end of the fiscal year.

This also allowed for changes to the schedule for reporting club membership and payments. Even The Rotarian changed its volume numbering system to correspond to the fiscal year (beginning with vol. 5, July 1914). Rotary continued to hold its annual conventions in July or August until 1917. Delegates to the 1916 event in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, approved a resolution to hold future conventions in June, mainly because of the heat in cities where most of them occurred. The next one was held 17-21 June in Atlanta, Georgia. The term "Rotary year" has been used to signify Rotarys annual administrative period since at least 1913. An article in The Rotarian that July noted, The Rotary year that is rapidly drawing to a close has been signalized by several highly successful joint meetings of Clubs that are so situated as to assemble together easily and conveniently. Since the executive committee's decision in 1913, the end of the Rotary year has remained 30 June. (source: http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/110708_news_history.aspx)

    Learn to move on . . .

A wise man once sat in the audience & cracked a joke. All laughed like crazy. After a moment he cracked the same joke again and a little less people laughed this time.

He cracked the same joke again & again, when there was no laughter in the crowd, he smiled and said,

"When you can't laugh on the same joke again & again, then why do you keep crying over the same thing over and over again

I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.

Membership responsibilities What Rotarians get out of Rotary depends largely on what they put into it. Many membership requirements are designed to help club members more fully participate in and enjoy their Rotary experience. Attendance Attending weekly club meetings allows members to enjoy fellowship, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other business leaders in their community. If members miss a meeting of their own club, theyre encouraged to expand their Rotary horizons by attending a meeting of any other Rotary club in the world. Service By participating in local and international service projects, club members can volunteer their time and talents where theyre most needed. The four Avenues of Service are Rotarys philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the clubs effective functioning. Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice

high ethical standards. Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its

community. International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotarys humanitarian reach around

the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. Finding and keeping members To keep clubs strong, every Rotarian must share the responsibility of bringing new people into Rotary. Even new members can bring guests to club meetings or invite them to participate in a service project. Keeping members involved in Rotary is another responsibility. Fostering strong fellowship and encouraging early participation in service projects are two of the best ways to sustain a clubs membership. Dues Club members are required to pay annual dues to their clubs, districts, and Rotary International, as well as the subscription fee to the appropriate Rotary magazine. Leadership Club members are encouraged to volunteer for leadership roles at the club level and beyond. To learn more about leadership opportunities in your district, see the district leadership seminar page and the club committees page.

    It is easier to criticize...

Once upon a time there was a painter who had just completed his course under disciple hood of a great painter. This young artist decided to assess his skills. He decided to give his best strokes on the canvass. He took 3 days and painted beautiful scenery. He wanted peoples opinion about his caliber and painting skills. He put his creation at a busy street-crossing. And just down below a board which read "Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. Since Im new to this profession I might have committed some mistakes in my strokes etc. Please put a cross wherever you see a mistake . While he came back in the evening to collect his painting he was completely shattered to see that whole canvass was fitted with ..Xs (crosses) and some people had even written their comments on the painting. Disheartened and broken completely he ran to his masters place and burst into tears. Sobbing and crying he told his master about what happened and showed the pathetic state of his creation which was fitted with crosses and correction remarks. This young artist was breathing heavily and master heard him saying Im useless and if this is what I have learnt to paint Im not worth becoming a painter. People have rejected me completely. I feel like dying Master smiled and suggested Son, I Will prove that you are a great artist and have learnt a flawless painting... Young disciple couldnt believe it and said 1 have lost faith in me and I dont think I am good enough. Dont make false hopes". Do as I say without questioning it. It WILL work. Master interrupted him Young artist reluctantly agreed and two days later early morning he presented a replica of his earlier painting to his master. Master took that gracefully and smiled . Come with master .said. They reached the same street-square early morning and displayed the same painting exactly at the same place. Now master took out another board which read -Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. Since Im new to this profession I might have committed some mistakes In my strokes etc. I have put a box with colors and brushes just below. Please do a favor. If you see a mistake, kindly pick up the brush and correct it. Master and disciple walked back home. They both visited the place same evening. Young painter was surprised to see that actually there was not a single correction done so far, Next day again they visited and found painting remained untouched. They say the painting was kept there for a month for no correction came in! It is easier to criticize, but difficult to improve.. If you want to help people improve their behavior it is worth investing your effort in learning how to help people change their behaviors-, attitudes and skills. Also, always remember not to get carried away or judge yourself by someone elses criticism and feel depressed. Take criticism in your stride; consider that which are genuine and implement those which you think is the best to improve you as a person!
