Hospital has received the Michi-gan Center for Rural Healths2010 Michigan Rural HealthQuality Improvement Award forQuality Improvement Award -Award of Excellence. The awardacknowledges quality improve-ment efforts in inpatient clini-cal performance in the care andtreatment of heart failure andpneumonia, outpatient clini-cal performance in the care andtreatment of chest pain andacute myocardial infarction, and

customer service.This is the second year the

Michigan Center for Rural Healthhas offered this award. CarsonCity Hospital applied evidence-

based medicine to improve careprocesses in the treatment of heart failure and pneumonia,and overall customer service.

Together our staff is dem-onstrating we are providingthe very best in medical care,said Bruce L. Traverse, FACHE,President and CEO of CarsonCity Hospital. Carson City Hos-

pital is committed to the tenetsof quality improvement that em-

brace evidence-based medicineto improve health outcomes.

Carson City Hospitals mul-tidisciplinary team embracedevidence-based medicine in or-der to review their current pro-cesses and create interventionsthat improved the treatmentof acute myocardial infarction,chest pain, heart failure andpneumonia, and overall cus-tomer service. Clinical indicators

were based on the Appropriate

Care Measure (ACM), a compos-ite score that captures whetheror not a patient received all thecare that he or she was eligible toreceive. The 2010 Michigan Ru-ral Health Quality Improvement

Award Quality Improvement Achievement Award was basedon an ACM score of 95 to 100%.

Project Kidsight set for Dec. 11Do you really know if your pre-school age child can

see well? Early detection and treatment of problems canhave far reaching impact on a childs vision, learning,and sometimes even their overall health.

To aid in detecting any major problems, the SandLake Lions Club will be providing Project Kidsight

vision screening Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Kent DistrictLibrary-Sand Lake Branch, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Noappointment is needed, but an adult representing the

family must be there during the screening and sign con-sent.

The American Association for Pediatric Ophthal-mology and other certifed experts say that the best t imefor treatment of many eye problems is in the pre-school

years and that many problems will not improve if leftuntil 8 or 9 before detection.

Project Kidsight is a program of the Michigan Li-ons Clubs in cooperation with Childrens Hospital of Michigan. The objective of the program is to screen

young children to detect poor vision or risk factors,and is done by Michigan Lion volunteers using a spe-cial camera. This takes about 10 minutes. The photos

are then sent to professionals at Childrens Hospital forevaluation, and if further testing is recommended, thefamily is contacted directly. The Sand Lake Lions have

been told that at least one child from previous screen-ings was among the children with problems requiringtreatment. To date, about 5 percent of those screenedstate-wide have been referred for further testing.

There is no charge for this service project of the Li-ons, but donations will be accepted. You may also bringin used glasses or drop them in the eyeglass Collection

Box at the Sand Lake Independent Bank at any time.Remember, 10 minutes could mean lifelong better vision for your child.

The Newaygo Marching Bandfnished another success ul season

on Saturday, Nov. 6, with their per-ormance at Ford Field in the MCBA(Michigan Competing Band Associa-tion) State Finals Competition. Statefnals is or the top 11 bands in eachclass (Flight in MCBA).

Newaygo entered state fnalsranked frst in the state in Flight IV.(Flight IV is comprised o schools

with enrollment sizes rom 1 - 781.) The other 10 schools they competedagainst were Hart ord, Comstock Park, Brooklyn Columbia Central,

Watervliet, Parchment, Atherton,Durand, Godwin Heights, Grant andBelding.

Each band per ormed or 15 min-utes and at the conclusion o the

last bands per ormance, the judg-es results are tabulated, and thenplacement awards are announced.Newaygo fnished the day in 1stplace, as State Champions, with ascore o 80.19, just ahead o GodwinHeights 79.99

Rounding out the top fve were,

Belding (77.3), Grant (75.96) andDurand (74.33).

The Newaygo Marching Band would like to thank all o the studentand parent volunteers who helpedmake the season a success. Thank

Caleb and Tara Dufo o CarsonCity became parents o a baby girl atCarson City Hospital. Tessa Clair Du-fo was born at 4:41 p.m. on Nov. 22,2010. The baby weighed 6-pounds,7-ounces and was 18.5 inches long.

The baby has one sister Ara Ann Du-fo and one brother Parker Jack Du-fo. Grandparents are Mary and Barry Freed o Stanton and Kim and BarbDufo o Carson City. The mother isthe ormer Tara Ann Stephens.

OBITUARYRonald Gacek

MORLEY Ronald Gacek, 64, of Mor-ley passed away Dec. 7 at his residence.

He was born Nov 13, 1946, in Goodrich,the son of Joseph and Lorraine (Skelleng-er) Gacek. During his working years he

worked as a truck driver for Joes Rubbish, Waste Management and Sunset Waste. Heenjoyed hunting and shing. In 1973, he

married Sharon Ben-son, who survives.

Also surviving aretwo sons, Joseph (Am-ina) Gacek of GrandRapids and Ron Gacek Jr. of Holland; daugh-ter Melissa (Terry)Cave of Stanwood;three grandchildren;

three sister, Maryann (Robert) Cook of BigRapids, Sally (Edward) Thebo of Big Rap-ids and JoAnne (Harry) Telfor of WhiteCloud; And several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parentsand his step Parents.

Funeral services took place on Friday,Dec. 10 at the Heckman Funeral Home

with the Rev. Foster Brummel. Burial will be in Aetna Cemetery in Morley.GACEK

Annual IlluminatedHuntington ChristmasParade set for Dec. 10

The parade starts at 6 p.m., at thecorner of Darling and Main Street andends at Santas House located at the

Veterans Memorial Park. Awards will be given out for the best illuminated pa-rade participant. No registration neces-sary, come to the Fremont Fire Depart-ment parking lot by 5:45 PM and jointhe fun.

Here are a few tips from the experts atBehr on how to proceed:

How to Paint anExterior Door: The

Door FrameStep 1. Starting at the top door frame,

begin painting the inside of the frame. Work outward from the edge of the door.

Step 2. Continue until the frame iscomplete. Wipe away the excess paint.

The Door TrimStep 1. Starting at the top corner of the

door trim, paint along the side edge of the

trim where it meets the wall. Continue un-til all side edges of the trim are complete.

Step 2. Return to the top of the doortrim and paint the face of the trim.

Step 3. Continue until the door trim iscomplete.

The DoorStep 1. Pour thoroughly mixed paint

into a bucket and dip a quality 2- to 21/2-inch wide nylon/poly-ester brush into thepaint. When working outside, work out of direct sunlight and in temperatures be-tween 50F and 90F with moderate hu-midity.

Step 2. With your brush, paint the in-side and outside edges of the door.

Step 3. Starting with the top panel of the door, paint into the recessed area of the panel. Begin at a corner of the recessand continue around its perimeter. Work from top of the door to the bottom.

Step 4. Paint the remainder of the paneluntil the entire panel is complete. Repeatuntil all panels are complete. Wipe away

any excess paint. To eliminate unwanted brushstrokes, smooth out the panel by tak-

ing a lighter stroke over the newly paintedarea.

Step 5. When the panels are complete,paint the stiles of the door in the follow-ing order: middle, top, center, bottom, left,right.

OpeningsStep 1. Pour thoroughly mixed paint

into a bucket and dip a quality 2- to 21/2-inch wide nylon/poly-ester brush into thepaint. When using more than one gallon of paint, combine the colors for better coloruniformity. This intermixing is called box-ing.

Step 2. With your brush, paint the in-side edges of the cabinet door openings.

Step 3. Paint the middle stile from topto bottom, following the wood grain. Thenpaint remaining stiles in the following or-der: top, bottom, left, right.

The Side PanelsStep 1. Using your brush, paint (cut in)

around the perimeter of the cabinet whereit meets the ceiling, walls, countertops and

oor.Step 2. Pour paint into a paint tray.

Work the roller into the tray until it is fully loaded with paint. For best results, use a

-inch roller cover.

The Paneled DoorsStep 1. Paint the edges around the pe-

rimeter of the door.Step 2. With the door open, paint the

recess of the door panel. Start at a cornerof the recess and continue around its pe-rimeter.

Step 3. After painting the entire panel, wipe away the excess paint that has over-lapped onto the door frame.

Step 4. Paint the door frame in the fol-lowing order: top, bottom, left, right.

Step 5. Paint the backside of the door.Leave the doors open until the paint is

completely dry.

High school teacher, Colleen Simmons, was nominated for theNational Citizenship Education Teacher Award. The Veteran of Foreign

Wars (VFW) awards this honor. Colleen teaches sociology, psychology,speech, and world history. Shes been teaching for 18 years, 13 of themat TC Middle School.

Teachers nominated for this award arethose who promote civic responsibility, agetiquette and patriotism, those who organizecommunity volunteer projects, and helpstudents to develop a better understandingof democratic values and beliefs.

Colleen has taken on many leadershippositions such as, administrator for HelpingHands, Patriots Pen, and Toys for Tots. Sheis a student council advisor, and this year

she is the advisor for the Bullying Programat the high school. Colleen was selected asa Target Teacher Award Winner in 1998.

Peggy Just, Howard City VFWrepresentative, nominated Colleen.Peggy stated, Her (Colleens) greatestaccomplishment is the life-enduring impact she leaves on every youngperson who passes through one of the many classes she teaches. Indeed,it is people like her who put pride in the American ag that hangs onthe wall of her classroom.

Shannon Higgins joined MacNaughton Elementary in September.She is the preschool program director and teacher. Shannon receivedher bachelors degree at Central Michigan University and her mastersdegree at Oakland University. She taught kindergarten for ve yearsand middle school for one year in the northern Metro Detroit area.

I had wonderful teachers who provided me with outstandingeducational experiences. My favorite teachers were able to get usexcited about learning. They allowed us to be active in our learningand we had fun in the process. My teachers also fostered in me a loveof literacy. By frequently reading aloud to us, and planning memorablereading activities, I grew to love books. Finally, my favorite teachers

also made me feel that I was truly caredabout as an individual. I understand howimportant this is and I strive to providemy students with a warm and caringclassroom environment where each studentfeels valued. These wonderful experiencesgrowing up inuenced my decision tobecome a teacher, said Shannon.

Shannon grew up near Clarkston, whichis located by the DTE Music Theater andPalace of Auburn Hills. She moved toRockford in September. In her free timeshe enjoys downhill skiing, attendingcommunity events, reading, bike riding,and hiking.

Last spring, the Board of Education considered a reconguration of our elementary buildings. The question was: Would it work to changeSand Lake into a Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade building for the entiredistrict, and change MacNaughton Elementary into a Kindergarten,First, and Second grade building for the entire district, and then closeEdgerton Upper Elementary? The Board decided not to make anychanges for this current school year. A meeting has been scheduled forcommunity members to review this idea and to look at other ideas thatmay be benecial for our school district. This meeting is scheduled forMonday, January 24, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the boardroom at theAdministration building in Sand Lake.

Kevin Harkness is a voice that is heard every day by the bus drivers.He is the new dispatcherthe one that makes sure busses get out ontime, takes parent calls regardingstudents not riding and communicatesthis to the bus drivers. He joined thestaff in September and in additionto dispatching, he has other dutiessuch as scheduling maintenanceand ordering parts for service. Healso trains sub bus drivers and givesexperienced drivers a refresher coursecovering the new state laws.

Kevin lives in Howard Citywith his wife, Jaime, and their threechildren. Jaime is a fth grade teacherat Newaygo Public Schools. In Kevinsfree time he coaches several sportsteams. He is an assistant coach for thevarsity football team in Newaygo.

MacNaughton third graders went back in Michigan history to atime when only Native Americans lived here. Garth Butler, who had awealth of information and authentic artifacts to share, helped the thirdgraders in this journey. They learned how Native American childrenwere born and cared for by parents, the roles and chores of children,and games they might have played. The lullaby Rock A Bye Babywas written because the mothers hung their babies in cradleboards ona branch while they worked outside. Childrens games replicated theskills theyd need when they grew up, such as; arrow accuracy, running,and being quiet. Thanks to the MacNaughton Boosters for funding thisamazing adventure.

The Tri County Middle School Pom Team, coached by Kim Hayden, competed

in a major competition in Byron Center this weekend. They placed third inContemporary Dance and third in Jazz. The biggest honor was the last and mostprestigious award handed out, called the Tracy Weber Unity Award. TCMS Pomswon it for their teamwork, character, and skill.

This award was given the most attention of all awards, and the T.C. girls werepicked over such teams as Rockford Varsity, East Kentwood Varsity, and JenisonVarsity. These kids and their coach, should be congratulated for representing TriCounty in such a positive way.

The Byron Center A.D. also called the team up before the competition began,to offer condolences to them and our community for the loss of our formerprincipal, and teacher. The entire assembly (about 900 spectators) bowed theirheads for a moment of silence in honor and memory of Mark and Randy.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number ve inthe states highest accident rate).

What can you do? Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober. Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision. Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.

Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.If a crash is unavoidable: Dont swerve! Brake rmly Hold on to the steering wheel. Stay in your lane. Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
